That's why I always stand right outside the bay and watch them do the work.
Also I take a sample of the oil or transmission fluid before changing on a paper towel and check it again after changing and compare samples.
Also, ladies, if you don't know anything about cars and engines you really should have a man take it to be serviced.
They often target women as easy marks unfortunately.

My auto repair/service guy is worth his weight in gold! (and he ain't no small dude either)

I agree with Popeye, I have found quite a difference when I have a man take my car into some place then when I take it in myself. I have had some crap pulled on me.

To be fair to the company in the video, they are probably independently owned so the honesty is based on the owner of any shop and not some corporate scheme.

lol marie....... I have to agree with Popeye, in general. Too many clowns see a woman by herself and you can see the dollar signs in their eyes, unfortunately. But there are certainly ladies that know enough to not get cheated.

Mavis -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/30/2006 6:21:30 PM)

i think Sears got gigged for something like this chain-wide a few years back.  Didn't they have to pay some pretty large class action suit for taking seniors for a ride?

If you really want to be scared, ask your local mechanicbout eir prices, and see if you can get them to justify them by admitting this one:  "we charge within acceptable legal limits for Tennessee"...  i was soo pissed to see they have laws of upper prices, and the longer a customer is a customer, the higher up the scale they go.  Using the first few services at a low price to build trust and loyalty, then ramping you up over subsequent visits.

It's not just women, Daddys are high targets.  After one mechanic W/we used found out there were 3 cars to the family, we got the up-ramp slot,  especially repairs to a daughters car, they know daddy will pay anything to make sure daughter doesn't break down in the middle of the night on a lonely road..

Mavis -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/30/2006 6:22:42 PM)

marie, guys get taken more often.  WE know we need to watch.  They assume they're not easy marks <giggles>

Well, it's not as if I really know much about cars.  But there are plenty of men who don't either.

I know this sounds wacked, but I can tell if the mechanics are being honest when discussing their 'diagnosis' of my car.  I dont know how I know, I just know whether or not Im being lied to.

And I know Popeye really meant well with his statement, it just struck me immediately when I read it.  Honestly I can't imagine saying to my daughter when she's old enough to drive...."now honey, you know....when you need an oil change, you need to find a man to take the car in for you.  lmaoo.  I dont know...I cant imagine saying that.  Though I will admit that while I was married and didnt have to concern myself with things like dealing with mechanics,  it was nice.

Or maybe they're just scared to death of us stabbing them with our pretty pink nail file.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/30/2006 7:26:49 PM)

I had taken my car in to be serviced in Ohio before I moved.  A good friend of mine worked at the service station, however there was a second technicial who grabbed my file before he did and he was going over the car with me. Obviously, he figured becasue I had tts, I had never see the inside of a car, becasue while the hood was open, he kept waving his hand indicating in the general direction of the car but not actaly teling me anything.
He kept adding things to the list of what was wrong with my car.  I had come in to get the oil changed and have a few other thigns looked at.  He went on to tel me that my spark plugs were worn (they get worn?) and I needed to replace my break shoes and pads. Then something about my shocks and struts being questionable.
I raised my eyebrows and asked him, quite calmly, if I could have a second opinion.
He asked why.
I siad, simply, that THIS store had replaced my break pads less then a month ago, so I knew they were fine. Also, since my model car doesnt HAVE struts... I was a little concerned about his diagniosis of my probems.  I offered to wait patiently.
My friend came over and told me that my oil and spark plugs did need changed.  I said OK, do it.
He also said that there were several people who greaty enjoyed watching me knock the guy down a notch.  He was a cheuvanist and had pulled similiar shit on other women before.

Even if you dont really know what you are looking at, look unde rthe hood with them.  It makes them think you might know, and makes them less likely to try and BS you.  That goes for men and women.

It is much more than one company if you've been reading the news the past 6 month's.

Why not save the 10 to 40 dollars and do it yourself?  I don't think I have ever paid anyone for something so simple to do in my life.
If you absolutely need help doing something request old parts.

Ava82 -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/31/2006 7:13:20 AM)

Stuff like this reminds me of the time that a guy at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change was going on about how my air filter needed to be replaced, and he could do it right there, real quick, for $30.  I was like, "Look dude.  I can drive up to Auto Zone half a block away and do it myself for $5.  Shut it down."

I had trouble with Midas too.  Arrrgh.  I should know better than to cheat on my mechanic.

toservez -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/31/2006 7:58:26 AM)

All I can say is with my former Master I use to take the cars in for service and repairs and most of the time what they initially told me and what they said after I whipped out the cell phone to call my Master changed quite a bit. I am sure there are men who are suckers but I have to guess the odds are the crooks pick on the females in higher percentages.

hunterwolf -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (10/31/2006 8:09:03 AM)

Firestone is another winner. Go in for an oil change & they are practically ready to scrap every car that comes in to them.

They get really nervous when you stare at them from their parking lot.

Moloch -> RE: Next time you take your car to the shop (11/3/2006 5:26:36 PM)

Never ley your friends know that you are good with cars either or youll be stuck ander a car in the middle of winter outside with numb hands trying to wrench off rusty bolts.

I've just recently started paying for oil changes and I consider it money well spent.  My time is worth more than I was saving. For major work (timing belt, oil pump),  I do business with a well established local guy who charges and arm and leg but the job is done quickly, with no leftover bolts.  Plus, if it isn't right, I have somebody to cuss at besides myself.

Something as simple as a one semester class in auto shop at the local junior college can pay enormous dividends.  Most shops charge $50-$100 per hour based on the "book" which gives the time for each and every job on a car of any make. Good mechanics can beat the book by 50 to 500% depending on their talent.  It is not uncommon for a top notch mechanic to book 200 hours in a forty hour week.  At $75 per hour that is pretty good money even after you make the 50/50 split with the house....of course the exact opposite is true of recall work.  Only the best mechanics in the shop will be able to do the work in the book time...this is because the customer is the manufacturer.

Now that cars have on board computers you can connect your computer to the cars computer and it will tell exactly what is wrong with it and how to fix it.

Another benifit to being able to work on your own stuff is that you can now afford to own an exotic.  Mechanics who work on exotics like alfa romeo, lotus etc. not only charge over $200 an hour but they have waiting lists...one makes appointments with them as you might with a doctor
and they are much less forgiving than a doctor, who,if you miss an appointment  will only charge you for a missed office visit.  The mechanic will most likely drop you as a customer.  Being your own mechanic allows you to do the work on your schedule instead of working to someone elses schedule...and best of all when its done you know it is done right.
