St. Louis named most dangerous U.S. city

By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD, Associated Press Writer2 hours, 16 minutes ago

A surge in violence made St. Louis the most dangerous city in the country, leading a trend of violent crimes rising much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to an annual list.

The city has long fared poorly in the rankings of the safest and most dangerous American cities compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent crime surged nearly 20 percent in St. Louis from 2004 to last year, when the rate of such crimes rose most dramatically in the Midwest, according to FBI figures released in June.

How about your hometown? Do you feel safe there?

I wonder why their crime rate jumped so high.

Here's the whole list, if interested:

Oh no, it is only a 4 hour drive from the farm. I better move.

Actually, if I had to make a wild bet I would say there are several factors but the primary one being meth. Add that to St Louis being at the cross roads of the country, with many major interstates going thru it, and a river town (don't ask me why but it really does seem to matter) and I think you have a recipe for trouble. It has never been a city I wanted to spend much time in that is for sure.

I drove through St. Louis this past Sept twice on my way out to Omaha to visit friends.
I timed it so that it was about 2-3 in the morning both times with light traffic and I had my Glock .40 cal handgun on the seat right beside me for easy access.
One of my Coast Guard buddies who I visited in Kansas City was stationed there a few years back and said there were all kinds of shootings there. He also mentioned the drugs problems.
And by as much as I could see it looks like a real shit pit.

Not always - but a lot safer than id feel in the usa with all your serial killers and gun toting civilians.

I know this might hijack the thread, but according to the article the increase of 20% in violent crime from 2004 is about the same time that Missouri passed the right to conceal law they have.

I have been to St. Louis several time and find their downtown to be really nice and always felt quite safe. I am guessing that like most large citites it is not city wide but certain areas that the increase takes place.

In Texas, when the concealed carry law was passed, there was a 20% reduction - I guess in Texas the bad guys know the other person WILL shoot at them - LOL

I wonder if Kansas City's crime rate went up 20% in that time frame as well?

i feel pretty safe in my town. i don't notice much going on than anything that's unusal when it comes to shootings/murders/stealing/rape/etc. after looking through the list twice i didn't see houston in there. i guess i have a reason to feel such according to the article.

MasterEnki -> RE: St. Louis named Most Dangerous city (10/30/2006 1:52:50 PM)

I live just south of St. Louis about an hour. I go up there at least twice a week. It's not that bad. Most of the crime is in East St. Louis and unless you are going to the strip clubs everyone knows to stay the hell out of that part of town.

zumala -> RE: St. Louis named Most Dangerous city (10/30/2006 2:45:20 PM)

I haven't been in St. Louis since I moved out of Ballwin (near St. Louis proper) back in 1989.  My childhood seemed quite safe, though.  I wandered around all over the place on my bike and never found myself threatened or accousted.  I'm exceedingly sorry to hear that the safety level may have deteriorated since my departure.  I was always very fond of the Arch and the zoo.

I found Houston and San Antonio a whole hell of a lot more scary than St. Louis.  Where I live currently, I don't go outside to walk alone.  We had a guy with a meth lab caught nextdoor to us.  I can't stand this city.  I hate it.  I'll be very happy when we manage to move.

Wow, I thought Philly would have made it up there, with our 334 murder of the yaer today. I am guessing it is in proportion to population.

TheShadows -> RE: St. Louis named Most Dangerous city (11/1/2006 3:04:58 PM)

Living just 2 hours south of St. Louis, we travel up there quite often.  We've never felt unsafe.  Just for the record, I've felt less safe in some of the larger towns around here, than I've felt in St. Louis.  We live in an unincorporated village in a very rural area.  At least there are cops to be found in St. Louis.  The scenery close the interstates in downtown St. Louis does leave something to be desired, but the scenes within the local BDSM-D/s Community make up for it.  Great people, charity-minded, and always doing something for the greater good of our lifestyle.  Not to mention the 2 wonderful national events held there every year.  Beat Me in St. Louis in April, and Spanksgiving, which is this month. *End Plug*
