WASHINGTON (AP) -- Red Auerbach, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships in the 1950s and 1960s, died Saturday. He was 89.

Auerbach won 938 games with the Celtics and was the winningest coach in NBA history until Lenny Wilkens overtook him in the 1994-95 season. As general manager, the straight-talking Auerbach, who celebrated victories with a postgame cigar, was also the architect of Celtics teams that won seven more titles in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was quite the guy! I was never a basketball fan so I never saw him in person at "Tha GAHDEN"

He sure was, Popeye. Damn, just look at his impact.... one of the bedrocks of the NBA.

I met him.  He was awesome. Had no idea he was anybody, back when I did run into him. The Celtics practiced at my university and I got annoyed at one of the guys (who I didnt know was a team member) who wouldnt stop hassling me to give up my weight machine.  The coach, Mr. Auerbach, came in and told the guys to leave me be, and not to be too jealous that I was lifting more than some of them could.
