I don’t understand why Alaska, Hawaii and California would like to get out of the federation. Also is there a majority in Quebec in favor to secede from Canada?

In addition, the Militia thing in 1990s..... take for example the Michigan Militia. Why?

What is the benefit out of it? Are the USA and Canada dictators? **rolling eyes**

Perhaps because liberals are tired of paying taxes to support Republican welfare.

Tax revenue flows out of blue states and into red states.

Want to watch Republican economic theories in action?  Look at Iraq.

..i think there is a drive in a few places around the world in favour of decentralisation. In the UK, the scottish parliament and the welsh assembly have been accused of breaking up the union. When power is centralised, then secession will always be an attractive issue for those cultures who differ from the mean average.

Hawaii never enthusiastically gave away its sovereignty to the USA or certainly the native Hawaiins didn't and Alaska has a completely different history to the rest of the USA and joint  history usually means joint identity.

As for Quebecois, well they've inherited the French superiority complex even though like the French they have nothing to be superior about and see themselves as having a special 'cultural identity' and different from anglo-phone Canada. It might be a beautiful province but its the most boring one in Canada as far as I could tell from my visits and they don't even speak decent French. But there you go.

As for California, who knows but I bet CD knows his own state.

There is a substantial minority in Quebec who favour seperation. There has been several referendums on the question, and each time the seperatists lost. If there was a majority in favour of seperating, then you can bet your bippy they would hold another referendum faster than you can spit.

philosophy, are you aware of any economic studies aimed at understanding the economic result of independence?

It would be interesting to see. My initial reaction is that Scotland and Wales would be much better served governing themselves. The questions to consider are two-fold:

1) What would it mean economically? (The claim that Southern England supports the rest of Britain - does it stand up?).

2) Would power and economic strength simply transfer to Cardiff thus meaning North Wales would see no real benefit? (as per the North/South of England relationship).

There were studies done on this and I guess you believe the ones you want to believe. The question would be, not how things stand now but how successful independent governments would run the respective economies. The Scotish nationalists claim to Scotland being better off is largely based on oil, though take out English investment and this seriously depletes their claim as does the Scotish Parliaments proliferate social spending which is largely paid for by English tax money. They also counted on getting similar funding to what Ireland got from the EU which they simply wouldn't get now.  Scotland would also have the problem of retaining its best educated because they could earn far more in the south of England, which is one of the reasons for Scotland's dropping population. Wales would also initially suffer from the cut off of English tax and would probably not get so much money from the EU any more because of poorer countries entering the EU would be first in line.

As I said initially, its not how they would stand at independence but whether their governments were able to put into action the right policies to get investment into their countries while retaining the best of their work force.

(I'm thinking someone's gonna hand me a snub any moment...cause I don't have a clue what the fuck you're saying {I'm thinking, full, connected sentences would be workable here}).

If the States wish to secede from a corrupt, tyrannical freedom-hating federal government...
Im all for it.

Im really suprised it hasn't happened yet.

If Quebec seceeded from Canada it would be a third world country with no industry or agriculture to support itself.

If California, Oregon, and Washington seceeded from the United States, they would go from being part of the #1 economy on the planet to being #5.  I suspect that the United States would go from being the #1 economy to being #4 or lower.

While I can understand Hawaii not wanting to be a part of the US in the past, the only reason they do not have a Fiji level of an economy is because of the 50,000 people who voted "yes" on the statehood question.

I am uncertain why Alaska would want to secede.  They get $1.87 in Federal money for every $1.00 they pay in taxes.  Only an idiot would want off that gravy train.  Although, if they have been talking to the Quebecoise...

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.
