Absolutely. The last time I checked one of the most fundamentalist states (Saudi) was high on the list of allies.

In fact, it appears that, contrary to the official line, the most fundamentalist states are allies e.g. Saudi, Pakistan and those with a history of religious freedom (Syria) and attempting to run democractic societies (Iran) are deemed to be enemies.

Being realistic, the US Government does not choose its allies based on perceived, relative Islamic sentiment among nations. There are other factors at play.

It looks like we're leaving Iraq soon and BushCo has FINALLY figured it out that its going to flop on its ass and die.

Bush and his bu**sh** crew are already saying they've never said "stay the course" (just like they never used the words "Mission Accomplished" to describe Saddam's downfall) in a desperate attempt to minimize the negative effect the complete and total failure that is the Iraqi Invasion will have on them and the Republican party.

If i were being insanely optimistic, i'd keep my fingers crossed for the idea that Bush et al have come to the realisation that a continual war is not a good thing for America, but i shant hold my breath.

I dont think Bush et al give a rat's rear end for America.

I think somebody pointed out to Monkeyboy that if he doesnt do something quick about the situation in Iraq, the Republican party will be roadkill on the political highway in the United States.

I would put money on that person being his father.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

I see this language in much of the same way I read his speech about erecting the fence along the border. It's a cheap trick to appease his base and anyone sitting on the rails. The money to build it will never be appropriated. The Bush family and their cronies will pay for Iraq for a long time to come. There will be no future Jeb Bush for President.

In the late 19th Century Britain and Russia manouvered around the gulf states for several reasons, the main being to stop the other gaining predominance in the region and the control of resources. Afghanistan, Iraq and Persia (Iran) were occupied by both countries from time to time to secure self interest. Here we are more than 100 years later and the same policies are still in play amongst the 'powers' of the world. Then it was predominantly oil and now it is oil. Public opinion will always sway from pride and the ideal of doing the right thing to dismay at the deaths of soldiers and the cost in money. Domestic political pressures will amend and influence such policy but ultimately, whoever is President/Prime Minister, be they right or left the same national interest will always outway the losses in lives and treasure. Wars and conquest for national gain have been a stable of life from the year dot and they always will be. We are living through Iraq/Afghanistan now but if we look back we will see there has been countless Iraq's and there always will be.

A nihilistc view I know but a genuine one.
