I have always gotten excellent help here for problems of this nature.  I hope that I am not wearing out my welcome asking them

Over the early part of last week I was in the hospital for a severe kidney infection (you know, IV meds, huge pain killers to try to keep me from passing out, all that fun stuff).  I was let out and ordered to take oral antibiotics for 10 days.  For the first three days I was vomiting up everything that touched my lips with the exception of water and the antibiotics (thank god).  I am feeling better now (and almost 17 pounds lighter, no joke), but I have a slight problem.  I can't eat.  I try to eat and can eat a few bites before I feel sick to my stomach.  Everytime I think of food it seems to make me sick.  I called my doctor and she said that is normal and that it will pass with time.  Here's the big problem.  I still have to work.  I can't stand for more then about half an hour and that is not very good for someone who works 10-20 hour shifts on her feet.  I want to eat and I feel like eating, but after a few bites I can't force myself to any more.
Does anyone have any advice for things that I could eat that would give me the most benefits out of a few bites? For example, yesterday, in 24 hours, I was able to eat one Zone Perfect bar, half in the morning, half around 1 am.
I would be more then willing to just wait it out, but I don't have that option.  I talked to my doctor and she said that it would just take some time and to eat when I can.  That I can handle.  I just need advice on what to eat.

Sorry to hear that you haven't been well.

After ops or illness I tend to drop pounds too and its an uphill struggle to get back to normal.  Ive always found that the build up soups and milkshakes that you can get from the chemist and most supermarkets are really good.  They are only small portions but will keep you going until you feel more like 'normal' food.  The one I normally use is actually called 'Build up', im not sure of the brands available in the US, but im sure there are loads available.

I hope you feel better soon.

When I was ill for a long time in the hospital on PICC lines and all that NOT so fun stuff.  When I came out, my stomach shrank alot.  I drank ensure to help Me, since I couldn't eat alot at the time because like you, I felt very sick.  Add some ice and ensure will give you some dietary nutrition, how about yogurt too.  Soup like givemyall mentioned is good, just plain broth as well ( then in time add a bit of pasta and meat with vegies).  Smoothies with fruit and add some vitamin drops to it will help.  Drinking is all you can do and slowly build up the consistency.  Be careful not to get dehydrated as well.  Also, try gatorade to replenish too. Pedialyte will help hydrate you too.  Jello would be also another item that may help, pudding also.
Hope this helps, keep in touch.  PM Me if you need more info!!
Get well soon, sweets.

Thank you.  Those do help, although I am not supposed to eat dairy for another week or so (sorry, forgot to mention that) I can try some of the other things.

Instead of Ensure, try Boost. It comes in tropical flavors. Non dairy.

I would advise you to re call your MD however. I really don't think it's normal at all. I'm not saying anything is wrong with you healthwise, it sounds more like an adverse reaction to whatever antibiotics you are taking.
If it were me, I would not be satisified with the " it will pass " answer. I am estimating here: it looks like you have been unable to eat or throwing up for at least 10 days. As a nurse, that does not sound normal to me at all < for a kidney infection> and doesn't sound like it is passing.

Let me put it this way:
If you blew the engine in your car and had a mechanic fix it, but it stalled every time you came to a stop, would you accept this answer from the mechanic? Probably not, same goes for your healthcare providers.

Have you tried different fruits?
Dehydrated fruits?
Nuts?
these are some things that they use to help anoxerics with eating; ( not saying that that is what you are, only that some doctors recommend it for them to help with eating )

Try some drinks that are high protein? To help keep your health up.

Well, I was throwing up due to the kidney infection (according to the doctor) and it took some time for the antibiotics to take effect.  I have been on oral antibiotics since Sunday and was not throwing up after Monday.  Now I just don't feel like eating, which she said was normal for someone who has not really eaten for almost a week.  That is what she is talking about that will pass.
I have been eating, just not much.

I may try Boost, that sounds kind of good.
We do have some dried pineapple and soy nuts here at the house........

I had surgery which required 3 days of fasting.  It took well over one week before I regained my appetite.  I was worried about it and my doctor said it was "normal" to lose your appetite under those circumstances.  I started out drinking diluted fruit juice and eating soup (broth + noodles) until I regained my appetite.

keep the fruits and nuts on you and just munch on them throughout the day  And, as Ava said, take a vitamin also, it will help keep your health up until your eating habits are back to normal.

Antibiotics destroy your good flora..therby diminishing your immune system. Go to a health food store(not a drug store) and ask for a good, refrigerated probiotic to restore your body's ability to fight infections. Also look into herbals, such as olive leaf extract, oregano oil capsules, larix...for they all have antiseptic properties(killing virus, fungus AND bacteria)..far better for you than antibiotics..but antibiotics are all M.D.'s have to offer!

Make things that smell really good, like chicken soup and take some time enjoying the aroma , this will stimulate your appetite.

Try to stick with whatever your favorite comfort fooods are, what was made for you when you were little and didn't feel well.

Hope you feel better soon.

After I had surgery last year I didn't want to eat as well. I stuck to some of the aboved mentions, broth, protein drinks, etc. The one thing I found that sat pretty well on my stomach was a product from GNC. It is a protein water. Taste is not to great but I did notice I felt better after drinking one or two a day. I just about lived off of those for 2 weeks.

You also might want to try some bland foods.  Mashed potatoes, rice, cream of rice/wheat cereal, even oatmeal might help.

Hope you get to feeling better.=]

Another way to do it (sorry for two replies, I just thought of this) is don't make yourself eat a lot-just eat often.  A few bites here and there will add up into something if you do it a few times an hour.

I would suggest a cleansing tea....something with dandelion root, marshmallow root and ginger to start your day off. Chamomile, cinnamon and cloves are also good for nausea
Fresh unprocessed juice, I believe a beet and carrot juice would help.
I would also suggest looking into cleansing.....since the kidneys are a vital part of your system....can actually be done inexpensively...you should be able to google it under kidney cleansing.....
For a quick remedy....when I was pregnant with my son...I was severly nausea and vomited frequently....there was a product.....it was similar to a cola syrup....but it was sugary and nasty ...but it worked....I wish I could remember the name...you can get it at any drug store....

You've already gotten great ideas.  My suggestion is also fruit smoothies, gatorade, broths, and also try some creamy mashed potatoes.

I'm going to have to disagree with some (not all) of the advice offered here.  I have chronic stomach problems and I watched my father go through terrible bouts of nausea when he was dying of cancer.  You are already staying away from the dairy products which is good, but there is one dairy product I don't see listed, although I did see something similar.  Yogurt is probably going to be your best friend right now.  It restores some of the "normal" bacteria in your intestines that the antibiotics have killed.  (They don't discriminate)  I've even seen one advertised that is primarily for this kind of thing.  (Sorry, I don't remember the brand name)  I wouldn't jump to fruit and nuts too soon because they can be very hard to digest, especially the nuts.  Ensure (and products like it) are excellent for giving you some liquid nutriton.  You can keep a few on you all the time and drink them as often as your system will allow.  Basically, start with liquids and work your way up to foods that are easy to digest such as the ones that have already been suggested (mashed potatos, rice, cream of wheat, etc.).  I know vitamins have been suggested, but the B vitamins are most important for the nausea.  Sorry you're having such a rough time.  Hope you feel better soon.

Small quantities of bland stuff might be best.  Rice, soda crackers (great for nausea, as is ginger ale), baked turkey breast or chicken breast, white bread/toast with jelly, and/or a small amount of peanut butter.  Jello, broth, or how about Cup-a-Soup in some lighter flavor like garden vegetable or chicken noodle.  Apples and apple juice are light and easily digested.  Cereals like oatmeal, cream of wheat, cream of rice.  Mashed potatoes are okay, but they're usually made with milk and butter, and she said no dairy.  Plain baked potato might be better.
