Cowher had the best explanation, namely that the JETS were probably tired from 16 regular season games and two road games. Imagine how much the bye week will matter after an 18 game season.

I was very impressed with the turnaround in the second half. Loved the safety! Loved the deep strike to Holmes. I was rooting for the comeback win.

Footnote: All that running by the JETS in the second half -- it moved the ball -- but at the price of killing the clock too.

Well, maybe, but the Packers weren't tired.  I think Ryan's explanation was more to the point: they didn't tackle.  I couldn't believe the way Mendenhall was running all over them in the first half.  So maybe their run defense got a bit exposed--maybe it was a weakness waiting to be exploited.  The pass defense tonight was superb.  The run defense wasn't.  The Colts and Patriots never had the ground game to test the Jets' run defense, and the Steelers did.  But they kinda had to know that the Steelers were going to run on them.

The strip-sack was the difference in the game, yes, but if they had just fucking held the Steelers on that last third down, they would have had one final chance to win the game.  The whole point of not doing the onside kick was to hold the Steelers and get the ball back.  Every year they fall short.

Sanchez looked great.  Oh well, maybe next year.

And Rapier - I'm sorry, but I am afraid that we must be enemies now. For a couple of weeks anyway.

That's fine Panda - I know we can conduct ourselves in a gentlemanly/pandaly fashion during our period of rivalry :)

But you're doomed ... I awoke (slightly hazy but otherwise in fine fettle) to find this waiting for me on the doormat:

Big Ben has changed a bit in the few years since I last watched regularly ... he's hairier, and seems to have put on weight.

The man looks like a sasquatch that's been strategically shaved and bunged into a uniform.

But so long as he can scramble like he did last night, I don't mind :)

My take on it:

1. Agree about stopping the run ... to an extent. What I would say is that the yardage Mendenhall got on several of his really big gains in the first half was down more to immense personal effort than it was poor defence; the Jets got bodies in the right places, and even stopped him momentarily a couple of times, with more than one defender on, but he just kept moving those legs and powered on - the degree to which he got his head down and presented a near-horizontal target was staggering. 2nd half they seemed to put even more bodies on him, and closed up the centre more, but all that did was play into the hands of Roethlisberger.

2. The strip-sack wasn't the game. The game was Steeler offence, 1st half. As per the Bears, you absolutely cannot (at this level) give the opposition a 2 or 3 TD head start and expect to win. If you're behind like that then all the last ditch, 4th quarter heroics in the world probably aren't going to work because you need a load of things to work out for you, in sequence, in order to get the points you need.

3. Steeler defence was just very professional, and very solid. The commentator was rambling on at one stage about Troy Polamalu having a "quiet" game - bullshit. He wasn't putting on the kind of interception/sack-fest rout-show he's capable of, because the Jets simply weren't that bad - they weren't giving him enough mistakes to work with. But almost every single tackle from every key defensive member was solid, with good technique, and apart from the goal-line mix-up collision, they just weren't giving the Jets enough in the way of mistakes to make it possible to do much. To me that speaks of quality coaching, and lots of it, plus plenty of ability.

4. As I postulated earlier in the week, it was Roethlisberger’s ability to scramble that caused the Jets major headaches. The hairy mofo just wouldn't stand still long enough to present a decent target, and although his throwing on the run was frankly pretty poor, accuracy-wise, his receivers made enough space for themselves, and caught well enough, to be able to almost always give Ben an out. I strongly suspect the Packers won't make the same mistake, and will cover the hell out of Ben's secondary receivers much more efficiently.

5. There was a fundamental difference between the way the downfield defences of the Jets and the Steelers operated; the Jets were looking to pick the ball for interceptions to stop that drive whereas the Steelers merely wanted to bat the ball and stop that down. While it’s great to be able to pick off, it’s much harder to do than batting away, and the Steelers seemed more confident generally in their ability to stop each down, so instead of looking the “big play” every down, they just ground it out and took Sanchez’s options away, as often as possible.

6. Neither side did a great job of playing to the play clock; they were both forced to take unnecessary time-outs. The Steelers will need to sort that out if they want to beat the Packers, because I've a feeling that's going to be an even closer game, and it could well come down to the last 2 minutes.

7. In one respect it’s a pity the Packers won – don't get me wrong, I'm pleased for them, and I want a Packers/Steelers Superbowl, but I think the Steelers would have absolutely crushed the Bears, whereas I think the Packers are going to prove very, very tough opposition. I honestly don't know which way it’s going to go.

8. And yes, Sanchez looked superb – I was very impressed. Confident, great throwing action, good release, good eyes, good picks pretty much 90% of the time. Roethlisberger is a better scrambler of course, but that’s not necessarily a good thing; I can’t help thinking that Big Ben’s one big defensive move away from getting smashed into tiny pieces. The Jets defence didn't look capable of coming up with the big one, whereas the Packers did, although I have to say I was shocked at how poor the Bears were; they didn't get anything really right all night, and never got any kind of rhythm going.

But I'm a frood who now knows where his towel is (just behind me, on the arm of the Chesterfield), so I'm going to hang on in there and see how it goes. It has the potential to be a truly great Superbowl.

PS: This is ... odd :)

Rapier, you and Panda may conduct yourselves with all the gentlemanly attitude you may wish, however... Im from Cleveland, wich means, I HATE the Steelers with all of my black little heart. It also means I am sitting here hoping that Clay Matthews III, who's old man played LB for the Browns, tears the serial rapist's square head off of his shoulders.

lol :) Did he now? Well well well ... I understand your feelings, but I respect the man, and it shows great character that he gave his professional opinion, rather than trotting out the party line.

I adored him as a coach ... his personal style was all-Madden :)

But I can see where you'd be pissed :)

It's no wonder you're a bit bitter ;)

TBH part of the reason I love the Steelers is because so many people hate them, so you keep on keeping on, old sport - I wouldn't have it any other way :)

No, you do it because its easy to support a team that wins. They're like the Yankees of football. I noticed this time last year most of, if not all of you steeler fans were quiet, if non-existant. The truth is, your fans have no loyalty, and would drop them at the first sign of a bad season.

in re what is fast becoming the Jay Cutler drama

Now see that sort of thing is, I think, missing several very salient points; firstly, no-one knows the state of Cutler’s injury, so speculating on who’s “tough” or not is just uninformed, dumb-ass willy-waving. “I would have played on!” ... yeah, whatever. Knees are horrifically painful injuries, and often long-term or career-ending if you try to be a macho-boy and play through. You're less likely to do permanent damage playing with a broken bone than a torn knee ligament (or whatever), and if a QB can’t set themselves or move properly then they're effectively dead in the water without top-quality protection, which the Bears spectacularly failed to give Cutler.

But even more importantly these people dissing Cutler and giving him a hard time are missing the most important point of all; he was playing like shit when he got knocked. If he’d been blazing away, firing well and completing left and right then they’d have a reason to be pissed – he’d have let them down. But as it stood he was terrible; I've seen better throwing actions on a 5 years old, and my grandmother could have got more accuracy than Cutler on his last couple of plays, and she’s been dead for a decade.

Ditto the stand-in; terrible throwing. Now that 3rd string guy (forget the name, sorry) showed some promise; nice clean snap and action, fairly accurate, and seemed to have what the first 2 guys lacked most; awareness.

But, as always, there has to be a fall-guy. Someone has to be singled out as a scapegoat. Never mind the fact that the Bears Offensive line couldn't have “protected” a white-haired grandmother across the road, or that their receivers seemed sluggish, off-colour and generally lacking any kind of positional awareness. And let’s draw a veil over the truly abysmal running game, which showed up a lack of real passion and any sense of decent route selection, although in fairness the Bears’ offensive run blocking was so poor most of the time that the “routes” looked more crowded than a Green Day mosh pit, so selecting anything was going to be a mission. No, instead let’s blame the Quarterback. I despair of the ignorance in fan (and commentator/writer behaviour too) sometimes I truly do.

Telling comment from the back-up commentator in the Steelers game (was that Phil Simms? I’d had so much beer by then it could have been Elvis and I wouldn’t have registered it): “the Steelers know they haven't got the NFL’s MVP at QB ... but they don't have to have; it’s not all about Ben, it’s about a team doing it right on offence and defence, and a guy doing a good, but not necessarily great, job as often as he can” ... and I reckon that's on the money.

The Bears are looking to blame someone. But the culprit isn't Cutler, the culprit is ... the Bears. The coaching staff chose some daft plays (play-action on a 3rd & long? Are you having a giraffe? Yeah right, like a competent Packers defence is going to bite on that one), and were generally uninspired in their tactical awareness (they persevered with stuff that clearly wasn't working, most of the first half – if it doesn't work after 4 or 5 tries, it isn't going to, so change the fucking record), the defence was middling at best, and the offence lacked bite on the ground and in the air, and when your 3rd string QB is the best of the day you have to say either your 1st was off (carrying an injury already maybe?) or your team were either poorly prepared or didn't turn up. And, 1st half, the Packers were pretty much in that stadium on their own.

I know it sounds like I'm sounding off, and I guess I am, but it really narks me when teams and observers try to put the blame on one guy, if that one person has been as poor as the rest of the team. Harden The Fuck Up*and admit your own downfall was your own responsibility.

lol :)

When I first started supporting the Steelers (when I was old enough to know what I was looking at - I'd apparently loved em as a little kid, but my mum says that was colour related) they were average, at best. But they played smash-mouth defence and they tried their little hearts out, so I loved em. If I'd wanted a winning team I'd have been a 49ers, Redskins or Cowboys fan (although I did respect the Cowboys teams later on ... Troy Aikman and in particular Emmitt Smith, one of my fave running backs ever).

Whenever the Steelers played at home there was always great support, even in the lean years.

But it's ok, I don't hate you, I just pity you. You'll have been dead for a decade before the Browns win anything of note :)

And, i dont live my life on line. Damn if Downtown Pittsburgh didnt look like a beehive yesterday with all the black and gold. Steeler Pride is alive and well in Pittsburgh. Dont be a hater.

You know Urlacher was doing what he felt was best for the team. Unless Cutler has a torn ACL (wich he wouldent be walking if he did), the fans are going to run him outta town.
