But he never won an NFL championship, which was what you asked in your original question about Super Bowl victories. That was the context in which I replied to your post.

Yes, cheers again ... but surely "Championship" means Superbowl? I mean it's American Football, it's the NFL or nothing.

Most Brits rightly laugh at things like that mickey-mouse European league the NFL tried to set up over here, because, to us, and I would think to every right-thinking football fan, it's NFL or it's bogus, surely?

In actual point of fact, while American and Canadian football more closely resemble each other than they do any of the other forms of football, there are some significant difference -- the dimensions of the field and the number of downs comes readily to mind, though there are other more subtle differences, and only fans and players of htose two forms can understand how those differences significantly alter how the games are played. And also in fact, prior to significant changes in its rules un the early 20th century, Canadian football more closely resembled rugby than it did American football. As for the assertion that "it's the NFL or it's bogus"", well, even that is another matter altogether. Speaking strictly of *American* football, and the professional level, sure. But try telling that to college football fans. It's from the ranks of the college game that the pros are harvested, and college football in the US is every bit as important to our sports culture as is the NFL -- maybe more so.

College football, although I can't get into it, I love the trappings - the marching bands, student fans, it has a unique energy.  And it is important, not only for the players, but also many of the college coaches move into the NFL ranks.

Let's get ready to RUMBLLLLLLEE!!!!  [Announcer voice here] For the 2nd time since 1941, the Bears and Packers face off to see just who really is THAT good.  [An interesting tidbit here] It will be only the second time in NFL history that the Packers and Bears have faced each other in a playoff format, the other a season-ending "playoff" that was held to determine the Western Division title and the right to play the New York Giants for the league championship.
The Bears won that game, played just seven days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, 33-14, at Wrigly Field.

THIS folks, is the Superbowl without the cool commercials.

Cheeseheads, prepare to pack up your gear, you will be watching the Superbowl from home this year.

DA BEARS!

Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.

KICK SOME CHEESEHEAD ASS TO DAY GUYS!!!

[:)]  Okay i'm done.  angel

They play with a different number of downs?! Seriously? Wow I never knew that, thanks. I'd heard there was football in Canada but I didn't realise it was even a slightly different game.

Good point - I wasn't talking about the college game though, to be fair, only the Pro leagues, so US, Canada and that weirdo mickey-mouse thing they tried here in Europe. I don't even know if it's still going. And I don't care :)

I'll put my hand up and admit it - I've never seen a college game. I think I'll give it a look when next season starts, now I've found these various net portals.

Thanks for your post - most informative.

Little known fact.

Tickets for the Steeler game being held today... 220 - 1652 dollars.

Tickets for the first AFC game...15.

Aynne88 -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/23/2011 7:14:31 AM)

I am going to have a living room full of people later on today in a frenzy wanting to see the Jets get their asses handed to them. Please please please Jets suck it today. Bastards.

Well, I liked saying that. [;)].

tazzygirl -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/23/2011 7:18:22 AM)

I have to work today. But, at least i will get to see the game... since NO one will be going out to eat.

lol!

I'm not anti-Jets, but I am massively pro-Steelers, so I've washed my (non official, boo!) towel, and I’m getting some cheese in for the Packers/Bears game (go Cheeseheads!), plus plenty of beer (proper beer, mind, not the love-in-canoe crapola), plus plenty of nuts (oo-er missus!) and I’m all a-flutter with excitement ... can’t wait to start shouting and swearing at the TV!

Go Packers! And go-go-Steeler Big Ben Super-pass!

Wow really? That doesn't strike me as right - I mean yeah I'd much rather be at the Steeler game, of course, but the other game should be a corker shouldn't it? 15 bucks? You can't get a hand job for that these days can you?

Seems like good value to me. The Bears/Packers game I mean, not a hand job for 15 bucks :)

tazzygirl -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/23/2011 7:23:28 AM)

Umm... the first AFC game was held in 1971

Aynne88 -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/23/2011 7:23:30 AM)

Well this is Patriot country so it's kind of like the same mentality we support anyone that beats the Yankees and we hate the goddamn Jets. Hate. Did I say hate?

Oh fuck I completely misread that! :)

See? I'm nervous as all holy hell today!

FFS, Steelers? DON'T FUCK THIS UP!

*chortle*

I can't say I really hate any American football team ... there's ones I really don't like, but hate really isn't my thing. Football/Soccer is different though ... which brings me to a Stephen Fry joke:

"There are 3 English football team names that contain swear words ... Arsenal, Scunthorpe, and MANCHESTER FUCKING UNITED!" ;)

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (1/23/2011 7:36:03 AM)

Well... it's almost here. There will be two teams standing at the end of the day. Looking forward to some good football today. No injuries, just tough games. Typical Chicago weathr for the Bears/Packer game. Both teams should stand up well to it. They're in their element. A pretty cold one in Pittsburgh with the wind chill. I think that fares better for Steelers, just an itsy bitsy titch.

Thanx to my Steeler friends for letting me hop on your bandwagon for a couple of weeks. I think I have settled on pulling for the Steelers to win it all. Just remember.... come next season, all bets are off.[8D]

Katy: Have fun with your friends today, and don't get too hoarse from all that yelling.
RapierFugue: Sorry your towel didn't make it in time. The old one has brought you this far, no reason it shouldn't hold up today.

To everyone : Congrats on making it this far. Some will brag and some will sob. Just remember how incredible it is to have made it this far. Enjoy the games, have fun and stay safe. !

I'm ever-so-slightly offended you think I'd know!

Do you do favours for cheese? I've got quite a bit of cheese here :)
