To be honest, I have a hard time understand your defense of the team. The Patriots used to be one of my very favorite teams, because I thought they were what sports should be about ... good, honest competition. I guess if some team I didn't care about got caught cheating, it wouldn't matter so much to me.

So ... I really don't understand at all. If my favorite team, the Cowboys, were caught cheating, I would be looking for a new favorite team. And for them to make excuses, instead of just being an adult and admitting the mistake ... it's just too far outside my value system.

Aren't athletes and teams, supposed to be role models? Role models for kids?

Maybe we now know why your Taxachusettes politicians are all corrupt.  Not to worry though ... as you said, I mostly follow college sports, where at least they have honor among thieves.

Caitlyn:
Perhaps you missed quite a few of my posts last week. I have re quoted myself below for your approval. Nothing has changed in my mind.
I have been a Patriot's fan for 30+ years, my dear and I intend to continue to be a fan of my TEAM. I will not spend my days on this thread apologizing and flagellating for you or any one else. I do not approve of what our coach did, but in my corrupt mind I am not going to negate the entire team record for 7 years.

Are athletes suppose to be role models for kids ? No, not in my world. Parents are. That is where they should learn their value system. Not from a sports personality or a music personality. Here is what a parent with good parenting skills would say about this whole situation to their kid who looked on BB as a " hero" : BB is a just a person, and people make mistakes and do bad things. It doesn't matter if they are famous or just a regular guy. What he did was wrong and he is going to be punished for doing the wrong thing. Just like when you get punished for doing a bad thing.

Point in fact : the TEAM wasn't found to be cheating, BB was. And if you are going to be so high and mighty about your wide birth of condemnation, I do hope you hold Adam Vinitieri, WIllie McGinest, Deion Branch, Ty Law, and all the rest of the former player to the same standard. And Eric Mangini and all the Patriot coaching staff he took along with him to NY and Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss. In your value system any player current or past shoudl be painted with the same cheating brush. Perhaps Adam V needs a little * next to his Colt's SB win, after all, he was a long time cheater. Let's hope your Cowboys never obtain a Patriot in FA, it would certainly force you to find another team.

After my intial outrage, I have put this into perspective and it's football. Not life and death. And I will try to see the humor in the whole situation, where I can find it. If that offends you, so be it. I will be quite happy to remove myself form this thread to accomadate your value system.

quote:

Well, LAM. Imagine my outrage, disappointment and anger at BB and whomever else was involved in this. AS I just wrote in the NFL thread I cannot believe the arrogance and blatent disregard for the rules, despite warnings. I cannot believe this was worth forever tainting the teams accomplishments and integrity.

Whatever the punishment is, it is. Personally, I do not think the players should suffer on account of shady dealings by management. But I know others, yourself included, see it differently. I make no excuses for whomever is involved in this whole mess, and it is pretty shameful. At this moment we don't know who  is responsible for this, we all have a very good idea, but how deep does it go ? I guess we will find out by Friday. Anyway you cut it, it stinks.

It was that incident and an accusation by the Lions that prompted the stern memo about filming DCs on the sidelines. I thought it was a lot of non sense at the time.

I'm still in shock about this whole thing. I cannot believe the arrogance of BB to blatently flaut his disregard for the rules, despite being warned. And to jeopardize the integrity and accomplishments of the team.  I say BB, but the entire story isn't out yet. But I hold out little hope that he was not the mastermind. Difficult days to be a proud Patriots fan.

mb, you've been fair-handed about the whole mess, and if you remove yourself from the thread, I'll personally go to Massachusetts and flog you. Or not flog you, whichever gets my point across.

caitlyn, every team has cheated at some point or another, it's too much a part of human nature to think otherwise, and honor......... is a rare thing. It certainly doesn't exist in abundance in the college ranks. Or anywhere else in the world, sadly, my friend.

You're safe............ for now. Terry was under the Tuna's regime.
Ooops. maybe, maybe not:
BB was here under the Tuna, so I'm not sure if that counts. We'll have to run that one by the Competition commitee for clarification.

There's cheaters everywhere.  And anytime you are in a situation where big money is at stake this sort of thing is going to happen.  I just accept it as part of life.  I don't even get all that upset over it.  I'm more upset over what Belichick wears on game day.  Someone clean that dude up, please, no more cut off sweatshirt sleeves.

Wow ... I must have struck a nerve.   Please keep in mind that my original point on this topic, was that the new commissioner was a joke, with his get tough policy ... that seems to be only getting tough with players (and retired players that use medications in order to get an erection). I also understand that he and Robert Kraft and friends ( I heard this on a sports radio show, so don't know if its true). Business as usual, perhaps.

I didn't say I was outraged ... only that I didn't understand your support. I still don't, and quite frankly, hope I never do. Winning is only winning if you do it fairly and within the rules. Winning while cheating, isn't winning. It's only cheating. This would, and does apply to all teams in all sports. If it all comes out that other teams are doing this too, I'll feel the same way about those teams.

By the way ... please don't have to leave the thread ... but you may have to put up with big, bad Caitz calling your team cheaters every so often. I might consider backing off, if that sappy dressing coach actually decides to have values great than a three year old that swiped a cookie, and actually admit to his mistake.

Peace ...

Prediction: Rice 31, Texas 30 (We have film of Colt McCoy getting signals)

Caitlyn:

I have no issues with you or anyone else calling the Patriots cheaters. I stated my reasons for not believing the entire team and franchise  are cheaters, again, that's my opinion. I don't expect everyone to see it my way. I took your post to me as a slam against my ethics. That is where you struck the nerve. Not in your conclusion of the facts. I spent Sunday Am and early afternoon with some Charger fans who flew in for the game. They also believe the Patriots are cheaters, but they didn't make it personal. They teased, we teased back and all was good. We all walked away agreeing that whose ever team it may have been, needed the fan support.

BB said he takes full responsibilty for the whole thing. That's an admission of guilt. Just because you and I didn't get answers and he didn't publically bleed for us, doesn't mean he didn't admit it.

I posted this somewhere else, but yes, Kraft and Goodell are friends, Kraft campaigned for Goodell's appointment as Commish. Which leads me to believe that Kraft had no knowledge of this stuff. He wouldn't risk his friendship, he knew Goodell was going to crack down on stuff and wouldn't have wanted a sherriff, if he knew about the shady dealings. All speculation on my part, but there it is.

MS. Katy and Ms Caitlyn:

Now see there is where neither of you understand New England fans. We will accept BB's cheating, but if he ever again wears a hoody, other than that ugly grey one, we will definately revolt.
He wore a shiny red hoody against the Colts in reg. season last year, and we lost. Never again, we just won't tolerate it. It's funny I was at that game and when BB came on the field in that hideous thing, the entire section was buzzing about us being doomed on account of the red hoody. Same in the lots after and media next day and it has become sort of an local urban legend that he is never agin to wear anything but the ugly grey one. It's all tongue in cheek of course, but we really have grown to like that crappy thing.

I admit, Texas has stunk its way to an undefeated season, so far, but come on.

We're getting 3 of our cheating players back for this game, too.

The Atlanta Falcons signed former Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich on Tuesday, giving the team immediate depth and a potential contender for the starting job.
"First of all, I'm a football player and the last couple of weeks have been tough on me," said Leftwich, who was cut the week before the season by the Jaguars. "I appreciate the opportunity and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help our team."

Leftwich's agent, Tom Condon, said the former first-round draft pick passed a physical, worked out for the team and signed a two-year, $7 million deal. The 27-year-old Leftwich is set to join the Falcons for Wednesday's practice.

Suspended defensive tackle Tank Johnson signed a two-year contract Tuesday with the Dallas Cowboys
Johnson, who played the last three seasons for the Chicago Bears, can't play for the Cowboys until he completes his eight-game NFL suspension for violating probation on a gun charge. He has served the first two games of that suspension and will still have to apply for reinstatement.

Johnson signed after visiting with the Cowboys and taking a physical. He will make about $255,000 this season, the prorated portion of a minimum contract.

Let's get some facts straight....The Packers have never ever cheated....Though I have no proof... there has been a rumor floating around for some time that the commissioner, out of fairness to the other teams, has "ordered" the precious Brett Favre to throw directly into double coverage at least twice a game...He must also be sacked or hurried at least one time...see Michael Strahan...

Anywhoo...Level and to the other misguided Cowboy fans....Your team is about to be dismantled by the second best team in the NFC North.  I will enjoy witnessing the drubbing possibly first hand....I will be dressed in Packer regalia...Sitting next to the plastic surgeon "on call" who will be responsible to try and keep Romo's appearance after the game and the several months of required healing "presentable."

Go Pack....I love you Brett..you precious thing, you.

Whitney too

Reminds me when I was but a young Domiboy....The Hendersons had gotten a new cat...and I asked My mother, Dommenique, if after dinner I could go over and fist it?....She responded to my GrandDomi.."Children are so precious at his age"....She then looked at me, smiled and said "Just allow yourself enough time to get back and get your homework done."

God, I miss mom.

I have been wondering if this would be looked into. Goodell's wife < Jane Skinner > is a Fox News  reporter, . Kind of curious how Fox is the one whose hands that the leaked tape fell into. I have been a big supporter of Goodelll, and still am even if he had suspended BB, but I think he needs to clean up his house too. His credibility will be compomised if this one gets pushed to the corner.

"The NFL is conducting an internal review to determine how a copy of the Patriots' videotape that spied on Jets signals during the teams' game ended up being aired on Fox's NFL pregame show on Sunday."

I have yas all beat. I'm a JETS fan. They played a team that couldn't score at a High School prom with an SUV full of beer and lost.

And what the fuck is up with those Bengals? Look, I played defense. If your offense scores 45 points, you OWE IT TO THEM to make sure that you give up no more than 44 or you leave your fucking liver, on the playing field!

For reasons far more nuanced than he offered Tuesday night on HBO, Donovan McNabb is right, black NFL quarterbacks face more pressure, scrutiny and criticism than their white counterparts.
The assertion is neither debatable nor controversial. In fact, when James Brown's sit-down interview with the star quarterback was over, I wondered how McNabb's comments had caused much of a stir.

He'd simply stated the obvious in the most inoffensive way possible. McNabb's comments were not angry, defiant or whiny. They were matter of fact.   They were also incomplete and, therefore, out of context.
