Status: offline 		I had one for 10 years, a rose on my breast. However my (former) Master hated it so I spent the equivalent of $1500 and 18 months having it lasered off. The scar is not really noticeable but will never tan. Think looong and hard before you make the decision.

Status: offline 		Make sure it is something personal to you because you are the only person guaranteed to be with you your entire life.

As for the back piece... you can see in my profile pics that I have a rather impressive one (14 hours or work). I felt very little discomfort with it. The only areas that gave me any pain were toward my waist & the lower part that went into my upper butt cheek. Over all I had far less pain with that than I did with the much smaller one that I have on my upper back & on the back of my shoulder.

When you find an artist to do this piece with go in for the first visit & ask questions. They will tell you what areas are easier to get ink with very little discomfort. Work with them to create a custom piece. All of my current work & any future work is all custom & based on my own designs. It took me about 3 visits to get my back piece to mu liking before we started it & then I came back 4 times to complete the piece.

Good luck with yours & if you have the money, especially if you go with the lower back GO LARGE & keep in mind that it would be the pedestal to any additional work you might have done on your back.

Status: offline 		Getting a tattoo is something to think long and hard about before you do it.  I love tattoos, I have three of them and plan to get more.  I happen to love all of mine, and each one means something special to me, but I have had friends that have some that look awful, and they are just plain tired of.
 
Master and I have talked about me getting his mark.  I don't mind this, but it won't take place until we are married.  I want something that means something to him, but to me also.  I don't really want a name, because even with all the best intentions into a relationship, you still can't say it will last forever.  Maybe he and I together can design something and that way it will mean something to our relationship.
 
This is something that you will have for life, yes.. you can get it lasered off, but that usually leaves a scar.
 
When it's time, you will find something you fall in love with, and ten years from now you will still love it.

Status: offline 		The other thing you may want to consider is henna... most arab/indian/egyptian beauty parlors offer it. (It's a veggy based dye, lasts for several weeks, non permanent/toxic). Google it if you want more info. It'll give you a good idea if you like the design on whatever location, and if the design is what you really want. The other thing I would caution you about is that here in Canada (and the same for other places, I'm assuming), many doctors won't give an epidural to a woman who has a tattoo on her lower back - they cite infection concerns (real or not... it's being debated, but still...). Just something else for you to think of.

I think you have a nice attitude. Pick one and put it where you can live with it and enjoy it for yourself. If you want one that is very personal for both of you then I am of the belief that it should only be done when the relationship, does not have to just be a D/s one, is on firm and established ground.

Status: offline 		I don't have any tattoos.  It's not because I'm worried that Master and I may break up, or that I'll decide later on I don't want it anymore.  It's because I think tattoos look quite ugly on older people whose skin has lost elasticity and has started to develop age spots.  Imagine a cute navel tattoo on a firm bodied 18 year old when she's sixty and has had three kids.

I might get flamed for posting this, but that's personally not a look I want to go for.

Status: offline 		At the encouragement of my Dom, I got two tattoos done that I had contemplated for many years. I will add a third within the next year. He finds them attractive, but more than that, knew that it was something I wanted to do for myself for a long time and gave me the encouragement I needed to go through with it. He also has two of his own, so it was a valuable thing for him to share his experiences having them done with me so that I knew a bit more of what to expect.

He shared in the process by helping me decide where they should go placement-wise on my body, looking at my designs, and once their placement was established, suggesting some design alterations that would make them look better there (my tattoos are on my hip crests, you can send me a message if you want photos of them). When the date was set, he came and sat with me for the two hours during which they were done. It made it a special process for both of us. I have had mine for over a year now, and have not regretted my decision to get them for even a second.

The suggestion of doing mendhi (henna art) is a good one. You can often find the materials to do them locally, and there are many good books on the subject that serve as primers to learning the art form. I studied it for several years with the family of a friend of mine, for whom this practice was deeply tied to their religion and marriage ceremonies- it was a special time for me to be so welcomed into their culture and taught this ancient art. It is also a good way to see if you like having a design in a specific place. I would recommend getting a kit and studying the art with your Dom, and then allowing him to put a design on you, since it's temporary after a few weeks. You can also re-trace the design repeatedly should you like it or want to keep it longer term.

My tattoos ended up being based on Morroccan menhdi designs, and done in the color of henna stains, since I found them to be so beautiful and unique.

Status: offline 		i've 4 tats and one is actually 4 in itself and i would looooooooove to get more.  i think my Dom would like me to take his marking, but i dunno about that.  Thankfully he's never thought to push the issue so eh, whatever.  On my own merit i've a few tat's that i want picked out.  One that is BDSM related but not Master related = )

Most of my tats are oooooold.  The rose on my shoulder is about 12 years old, i got it when i was 15 in Hong Kong to cover up the one a bf did when i was 14.  I'd like to add on to it, turn it into a clasp by taking the leaves and intertwining them around my shoulder.  So, i'd like to add on and change most of my tats - make them abit more detailed then my teenage mind was able to think about when i got them.

That is the idea, the ink is forever. Good or bad it is a memory you carry forever.
 
That being said i wore the same ink for 18 years with the same man and for 6 years after his death.

I am wearing new ink now and anticipating wearing it forever as well.

Status: offline 		I love both my tattoos and am planning on getting another one when I can. The idea for the third is still developing and has changed a couple of times. I have a good idea what I want it to be i just need an artist tht can do it.

I love tattoos on others as well if they mean something and aren't just blobs. I've found most people get things that mean something to them.

My first tat was not overly planned, but my second one i took 6 months making the decision as to what it is I wanted. I've had comments from some people on here that it's childish but everyone that has seen it in person has complimented it alot.

I'd not rush into getting one tho. If your Master wants to have you marked definately discuss it and come up with a design you can both agree on and somehting you know you can live with or get altered if the relationship ends.

Status: offline 		I didn't get my first tat until I was well into my 40s. I never could figure out what I wanted to "live with" forever, so I could never decide. When I did start getting ink, I was quite comfortable with what I was getting..and still am happy with it. I have several tats now and I can say that I don't regret any of them, but you have to want to get them for you, because no matter what ever happens, you are the one who will still have it.

Status: offline 		This is a choice that takes much thought and debating.  Also money.  Master has wanted a tattoo for a very long time and even had an idea of what he wanted.  However tattoo artists either told him it could be done or it couldn't.  Master then discovered my 13 CD set of tattoos I have drawn out and sold the rights too.  He recognized some from the shop down the street and finally asked if I would go with him to the tattoo shop.  Of course I did and I sat down with one of the artists there debating the best way to do the tattoo master wanted.  After 2 hours we gave up since master is very skinny and the tattoo was too big.  So after getting home I went to work on a dragon idea I had.  After 5 hours master grabbed the drawing I had gotten frustrated over and liked it so much that he wanted that instead.  So I redrew it out and added details and everything.  Even scanned it into photoshop to play with it some more in color and stuff.  Master watched the process in awe and has gotten an estimate for the dragon.  However he's taken my advice and is waiting a bit on the tattoo.  To give you an idea how much he likes the dragon, he has it as the wallpaper on his computer.  He tells everyone about it and sends them copies. 

I have also drawn tattoos out for other people and been there when it was done.  As always the person I did it for is beaming with joy and knows that its a personal and unique design.  But I charge for mine and some people think that is pointless until I point out that I'm taking the time to do it and using my materials.  So indeed getting a tattoo is quite a journey of thinking, headaches, awe, want, pain and joy.  And if you are intrested and you have cable there is Miami Ink on TLC.  Its a good show to watch and there are plenty of sites out there.  But seriously get one done that is personal to you and take your time looking at tattoos, pictures and whatever else of inspiration there is.  And one very important tip.  Don't just go to one tattoo shop, go to many.  Talk to the artists, see their work, look at the walls for certificates, get prices, and see what they think of the tattoo you want.  This is help you tremendously in deciding who will do the tattoo.  One last thing.  Don't let an tattoo artist persuade you to get something else.  Stick to your guns.  If the artist won't do it, find someone else.

Status: offline 		Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have been thinking about getting a tat for like a year. Its not the living with it forever thats stopping me, I even know what I want to get. The thing that is stopping me is that I think it will really hurt. I really hate needles so the pain of it is the only thing that is stopping me from getting it. I have asked my Master and he is fine with me getting one. So I guess im just wondering from the pople that have tats if it hurts as much as im thinking it does and where are the least painful places to put it.

Status: offline 		Collectively that's a lotta tats and a lot of good advice from the people who have them, Deep. I have several myself, and two that i have in the works and am planning on having inked are a ring of roses/vines around the outline of my aereola with a smaller (of course!) ring of thorns with teardrops around the  nipple...Also, i had drawn for me a slave, hands bound and kneeling. Perhaps somthing of that nature would be representative of you personally and a  more neutral 'symbol' of your relationship.  I say this because i have to agree with what Orfunboi said, you just cannot know right now what the status of your relations will be in the near or far future.. Whatever you end up doing, love it BEFORE you get it inked....
