I like that saying. In many ways.

Politics, religion in all its guises, politics being one of them for some folks. Wishes. Wiccan, Scientology, extremist politics, Goths, Geeks and sometimes me. The legends in our own minds, the latching onto things that might magically or even imaginarily lift us beyond what we are capable of, or actually willing to put real effort into lifting ourselves to.

Getting tattoes to be cool, piercings to be radical etc etc....but not actually doing much else of substance. Buying the right clothes and making sure the label shows, when anyone with the money can do the same....

So many things we do to be different, that anyone can do. Such a waste of time and money. And such willing victims of the mass market. That now sells individuality in chain/franchise stores.

Joining groups to belong, joining groups of nonconformists. Labels for rebels, labels for cults. And fashions for sale for all of them. Closeted gay predatory politicians in sheeps clothing, sheep in predators studded leathers.

Anything that gains meaning for more than a few, for more than a moment. Gets perverted, packaged, marketed, devalued and dispersed to nothingness, meaningless.

There is nowhere else to go. Extreme is a logo. The tour groups are blocking the way to the peak of Everest.

I almost long for an armageddon to try and live through, and see who's left that might be of real value...

But I've also had a few drinks.

Bottoms up !

Diversity is self defeating, if we all get tossed into the same place, we become more alike. The natural progression of things proves it.

Now if it is allowed to keep going everybody will be the same. Then where is the diversity ?

Have another. I am.

Che Guevara was such a cult figure because he actually got up and did something about the injustice he saw. Now we can argue all day as to whether he did the right or wrong thing but his attraction was he did something, something a lot of people wish they had the guts to get up and do.

It was brought to my attention by my daughter just a month or so ago that his image is back in fashion. I asked her if she knew what he was famous for. She said no but its a cool image.

I told her what he was about and now she is reading all my old leftwing literature.

Good.

Trouble is, so many just buy the cool image. Nice that you clued her in, and she is taking the effort to find out for herself now.

You can still walk out into the wilderness and be somewhere without any corporatism... Other people, well that is a different story, other people will be looking for some serenity too.

My former dom did work in Cuba within the music business, namely he produced some Cuban musicians. He told me that one of the beauties of Cuba was its lack of advertising. No billboards or signs anywhere. No corporate logos. He said there was something peaceful in the lack of that. It would be different.

This thread reminds me of when my kids were teens. The horrid ugly baggy clothes thing was in full force here in Iowa. I would push them to get clothes that actually fit, tie their shoe laces.....etc etc etc. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was trying to hamper their self expression and individuality. I made some remark about how, oh so very different the clothes they chose made them look from every other kid in school!! Uh huhhhhhh[:D]

LotusSong -> RE: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (10/9/2006 7:44:39 AM)

You write very well when you are self medicated :)

I agree with everything you have said.. and I'm stone-cold sober.

Dude.. That was like.. so deep..

And so true too.  I agree with all of it and the angst behind it as well.  Nice.

LaTigresse -> RE: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (10/9/2006 7:54:30 AM)

Yes, now my ass just needs to get skinnier for them![:D]

Funny how the fruit of the vine frees associations and inhibitions.
Yes, in the mainstream culture everything and everyone seems
to be for sale, we are living in a fishbowl with cameras on street
corners and our credit card purchases forwarded to merchandizers
and our voyeuristic tendencies indulged through something
referred to as "Reality TV".

"Getting away from it all" may involve a form of extroversion -
sports, fishing, hiking, etc; or a form of introversion - reading,
painting, creating, meditating.  Either way, good mental health
means remembering that yes, you have a brain and you best
put it to good use rather than stumbling through life on
remote pilot.

Just to add to the thread title:

"...but if wishes were fishes, we'd all have some to fry."

Vendaval -> RE: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (10/12/2006 2:57:58 AM)

Heh, don't get me started!  I swear that if I have to see one more
pair of boxers because some young guy has the back of his jeans
halfway down his ass....I'm going to staple the top of those boxer
shorts to the top of his jeans.

And the young gals wearing the way too tight jeans with the way too
tight mid-riff bearing shirts so that their belly fat becomes a
"muffin top"?  A good, sturdy rubber band would deliver quite
a sting to those rolls.  [:D]

A few days ago I was walking into the Supermarket and there were these three kids all dressed in black, shoes, pants, eye make-up, everything black.
I said to them; "Hey! You guys starting Trick-or-Treating early?" They gave me a real dirty look.
Two teenage girls standing nearby started laughing hysterically.
What do they call those people in black?
Are they trying to make some sort of a statement by their dress or something?
We see them around here occaisionally.

<wore black & dark..blue my whole childhood

one of my best friends just let go of her "goth" look[8|] hell she was criticized for the way she dressed/looked

Vendaval -> RE: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. (10/12/2006 2:16:05 PM)

Hi popeye,

Yes, their manner of dressing is a cultural statement,
they are part of the Gothic sub-culture, closely related
to the Punk sub-culture.  For the Gothic, do some
Google searches for bands such as: The Cure, Nine Inch Nails,
Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Concrete Blonde.
And for the Punk, search for Iggy and the Stooges, The Sex Pistols,
The Ramones, Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics, L7,
and Black Flag.

You can also try wikipedia and urban dictionary for definitions.

Regards,

Vendaval
