Smythe -> Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 7:43:17 PM)

Hi all,

I have been reading a bunch of posts this evening and for some reason, it really stood out that some people capitalize their personal pronouns in the middle of sentences (We took a ride in My car.  he always bring Me My coffee in the morning)

The idea of inconsistent capitalization is not foreign to me (Me?)  For example, I have insisted that my submissive capitalize my name and lower case his own, but this was an exercise and a way of instilling a certain consciousness into his writing.

But why would someone do it to themselves??  Just curious.

It depends on my mood, my Daddy does not expect me to capitalize, I do so on my own, and usually only in relation to the term "Daddy"... it is the same as using his given name for me.

My former dominant used to have me address him with lowercase when using "i" and uppercasing anything dealing with him.. my Daddy doesn't want me to do this, he would prefer proper grammar be used by me... he has recommended I do not use "LOL", and unfortunately I still do it because I am trying to take the edge off some of my posts..*smiles*.. I am getting better about it though, one day at a time.

DivaDuchess -> RE: Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 7:57:21 PM)

On OcCaSiOn ... I will capitalize because I've been working with a slave to do just that and I suffer extreme brain freeze.  In some cases, it simply a unilateral show of respect.  Either way, each person is different.

Why do people obsess on this stuff?

Nosathro -> RE: Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 8:04:21 PM)

Tal and greetings

It has been my observation that in some they will use M/my or something to that effect in chat rooms and message boards as well....something to do with ownership.

I wish you well

i am not a fan of using anything but normal punctuation online, but Master has different feelings about it.  i've explained myself here in a post long ago..  if interested, here's the link to the thread where it was discussed.

When You see oddball Caps mid-sentence, is a fair bet You're seeing either a typo, or a "Top-Dom/me- Master" designator.  No common usage here though, so many different ways W/we type.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 8:49:51 PM)

I've always thought it was pretty silly, but people need to do whatever makes them happy.

WetHotGoddess -> RE: Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 9:19:25 PM)

When others capitalize out of respect for a superior- this is TRUE respect, IMHO.  To capitalize "Me" or "Mine" in the middle of a sentence  is a form of egomania.

If you must remind others of your station perhaps you have none.

ego·cen·tric

Function: adjective
Pronunciation: "e-gO-'sen-trik also "e-
1 : concerned with the individual rather than society
2 : taking the ego as the starting point in philosophy
3 a : limited in outlook or concern to one's own activities or needs b : SELF -centered, selfish

DivaDuchess -> RE: Uppercase Letters (9/30/2006 9:27:50 PM)

It's not so much to remind anyone of a station ... it's more because it's become a habit.  For instance I don't have to remind anyone of who or what I am ... but I use it as a short punishment with some slaves who forget what they are and what I am.  Then when brain fry hits ... I can't seem to keep my fingers off the CAPS key *lol*.

Why abuse proper grammar and formatting at all?  If you know who you are and they know, what does it matter whether you type a capital or a lower case letter? LOL

Hello A/all,

I dont obsess on it.  I simply use it because there are people out there who do obsess on it, and in the words of Lao Tse (I think) "One enemy is too many."

But that is just me and I could be wrong.

ShiftedJewel -> RE: Uppercase Letters (10/1/2006 4:43:45 AM)

I've tried to do it... I've made a mental effort to remember to capitalize Dominant, Mistress, Master and all that.... I just keep forgetting.

My training through out my educational years keeps kicking back in.. damnit all.. and I forget to cap words mid-sentence. I think it's an online thing... you know, like in case the individual we are speaking to can't really read all that well but does recognize capital letters and therefore know it must be an important word or something like that.

That's ok, in real life I keep forgetting to add that "may" sound at the end of the dom as well.

koimizu -> RE: Uppercase Letters (10/1/2006 5:03:29 AM)

As mentioned in another post, it is a matter of personal preferrences one would suppose.  The whys tend to vary as the posts here suggest.  The stand that i take is this.

The use of a lowercase 'i' in reference to myself is because while no lesser in regards to thoughts, wellbeing and personal worth, i am beneath the hand of my chosen Master and wish to reflect that in my speech.  The extension of that 'i' when addressing other Dominants is to let it be known that a submissive is responding to them respectfully.

Now if They fuck up and lose that respect, that cannot be helped. o.o

In much the same way is the capitilization of You/r when responding in chat to a Dom/me.  The basic gift of mutual respect is being offered as well as acknowledgement of who They are.  If They ask that i refrain and use more common speech, so be it.   Both are comfortable for me and no hardship to change.  Now the use of 'third-person' is at times a challenge but adaptable to as well with little discomfort and only a bit more thoughtfulness as to how to phrase something so that it makes SENSE.

Sweet gods in hell there are a few little ones who use 3rd pov and leave everyone mystified as to what the devil was said.  Then again, a few moments of extra consideration can be a good thing, especially if one feels T/they have a tendency to put a foot in T/their mouth more times than is seemly.

Still, it just depends on what is prefered and considering the somewhat controversial nature of BDSM in whole, there is always a curiousity as to why people do certain things to themselves or others.  *grins*  The answers are usually lovely to think about.

Usually.

SirLordTrainer -> RE: Uppercase Letters (10/1/2006 5:21:19 AM)

I advocate the use of capitalization for several reasons, mutual respect being most notable. It also shows Me shes paying attention. As well I find it pleasing.

SirDiscipliner69 -> RE: Uppercase Letters (10/1/2006 5:28:38 AM)

For Me it shows mindset within the hierarchy of the relationship.

Most people can't use punctuation, capitalisation, formatting or grammar to save their lives anyway.

Hi Ellen,  Not exactly clear.  Why isn't "her" capitalized in your sig line?
Anyway, it's not a big deal but I guess remembering what to capitalize and when is one of those silly things that I might ask a sub to do, as I said, to reinforce some kind of mindset.  But I don't want to be bothered with it!  If I am going to remind someone of my "station" I think the only valid way to do that is by acting right and being a leader and a good example.

redpetals -> RE: Uppercase Letters (10/1/2006 5:49:55 AM)

Well ,the " lol " thing drives me crazy. ( even though i use it  myself to ease or assure the person i 'm talking to that i am not growling on this end )
Sometimes,it feels like a "laugh track" or "canned laughter" you  know like we think someone's not "bright"  enough to get it.
Errrr..because some people aren't bright enough to get it.
