gooddogbenji -> New Newts (9/27/2006 5:11:43 PM)

Some of you may know this, some not, but I have a fishtank.

I got a second one.  35 gallon, (36" x 20" x 12") with some tetras, rainbow shark catfish,a pleco, and now 2 california newts.

I bought a little foam "Island" for them, and have a little waterfall, so they can hang out on land, but also go for a swim.

As most of you should know, newts are amphibians, meaning they can live under water as well as on land.  So one (Named Ned) loves the waterm and has been sitting on the bottom, exploring the driftwood almost since I got him today.  Newt, the other guy, is scared to death of the water, and when I pick him up and put him near the edge, he went for a quick swim, then panicked until I helped him back up on dry land.

Anyway, long story short, leave it to benji to buy a retarded pseudo-lizard.

Yours,

benji

PS:  Bonus points for knowing where their names came from.

Update:

Newt (the retarded one) is now trying to escape from the tank by climbing the walls.  He's actually doing a decent job, we'll see if he makes it.

gooddogbenji -> RE: New Newts (9/27/2006 6:30:25 PM)

Actually, Twice guessed it and Topcat even knew it quite well.

Ned's Newt, a show about, well, Ned's Newt.  And Ned.  He featured too.

gooddogbenji -> The ongoing trials and tribulations of benji's fishtank and its inhabitants (10/1/2006 3:46:21 PM)

Alrighty, so I went out today to buy more flake food for my fish, as I was almost out.

I went to the store where I always go, had a wander about looking to see if my scats, who are currently on back order, had come in.  In my wanderings, I saw, without a doubt, the coolest fish you will ever see.

Anyone know what a sturgeon looks like?  Well, that's what it is.  A sturgeon.  Like you see on TV, 5 feet long, full of caviar, except this guy is 5 cm long.  Other than that, identical.

Holy fuck!  The single most expensive fish I have ever bought, but wow.  Seriously, just wow.

Yours,

benji

Benji   Let it grow up some and you can survive on fish eggs.   Just be careful to watch your blood pressure with all that salt.   I think you should go for a piranah next.  just keep your fingers out of the water.   You can feed it strays around the neighborhood though   LOL

gooddogbenji -> RE: The ongoing trials and tribulations of benji's fishtank and its inhabitants (10/1/2006 3:57:54 PM)

Actually, this one only gets to be about 24 inches long, and not even that big in my tank (unless I upgrade, of course)

So I guess I'll just have to starve.

benji

Don't worry benji my pets r retarded too. My rabbit pete pees on me and bites me all the time and my hamster frankie thinks shes in mission impossible lol.

gooddogbenji -> RE: The ongoing trials and tribulations of benji's fishtank and its inhabitants (10/1/2006 4:16:28 PM)

Actually, Whiskers (Named by a coworker who was dismayed at my newts' names) has now taken to swimming in circles, going upside down randomly while panicking.  He has also tried beaching himself on the newts' island and eating my newly aquired blind cave fish.

As they say, pets are usually like the owners.

benji

When you promised Ned his own private island somewhere if he'd just come home with you, that's probably not what he had in mind.

Back by popular demand:

As all of you should know, I was in NYC for a few days.  During this time, a lot happened.

First, a few days before I left, my tank with the newts got Ick (little white spots, not a dangerous disease but should not go untreated)  This meant that the newts could not be in the tank.

So I took them out and put them in a small plastic container, then started medicating the main tank.

At this point also, Whiskers was no longer healthy.  Because he's not all that fast, other fish eat the food before he does, and so he's slowly starving.  So I caught him and put him in a separate little net, and fed him separately.

So I now have 2 tanks, one fish separate, and the newts in a separate container, one tank is being medicated, and on fish is starving.

I go away to New York.

I come home.  Whiskers has kicked the bucket, my puffers (in the other tank) have been eaten, and the tanks are filthy.

Fuck.

I'm now doing about 30% water changes daily on both tanks to get them clean again, and I need to find a new fish to replace whiskers.

Oh well.

Yours,

benji

benji,

I used to clean and maintain fish tanks as a side job.

35 gallons is too small.  Every time a fish takes a dump in the water your chemical levels skyrocket which makes the fish in it prone to whatever disease (like Ick) that is floating around in the tank.

I would suggest going with nothing less than 100 gallons.

Secondly, I tended to go with the attitude that "dude, you got sick, bummer" approach and watch the rest of my psychotic African cichlids enjoy their lunch.

I would invite friends over for beer on feeding night.  The carnage really caused the testosterone to flow.

My fish store guy smuggled in 4 chinese snakeheads and sold them to me, saying they could live in my fish tank.

The longest living one lasted 4 days.

It does not sound like you tend to like psychotic nut-house fish in your tank, preferring the doldrums of community fish, but the more water you can put in to buffer them the happier they will be.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Have you had the rabbit fixed? If not that could be the problem. My unmentionable has a holland lop rabbit and we had to have him fixed because he started to do that.

Good Luck,
~Lashra
