Already own the DVD, Sissify.  Hell, I was in the Rose Garden the night Waters shot "In The Flesh."  Somehow the funny looking cigarette they were passing around the stage wasn't in the movie.  If you are actually bored enough to watch it in super slow-mo, I'm the guy in the "Rehab is for Quiters" T-shirt

I've got to add this old favourite from the 80s though most people I guess will know the English version but the German is far better.

Nice choice. Have you heard/seen The Golden Path and video - also by Chemical Brothers? Well worth a listen and watch.

lol MC, that's shocking, wasn't she charged with reckless intent towards ear lobes for that effort? Can you remember the German Eurovision song contest winner around 1983? Can't remember her name but she was an absolute pearler - think I had recurring dreams about her for years.

Hey. I say her live in Frankfurt in the early 80s and she was divine. There is something sexy and deviant about a young woman strutting her ass in leather while spitting those sharpe German vowels.

Those balloons flying about must have got right on your tits though?

Have a look at this, MC. Should bring back a few memories.

Anyone political (left-wing that is) or gay or anti-establishment will love this band. Their music was essentially a social commentary on class, sexuality and gender. Groups still come from the US, Japan, Europe, South America etc to conventions in England to discuss this bands lyrics and the meaning. Put this band in it's context, 1983 and Britain ran by Thatcher was one big monarchist, conservative hell hole. Anyone who was left-wing or gay and hated the Government loved them. Just a shame I was only 10 in 1983 and didn't get in to them until 1988 but never mind.

Not a problem, philosophy. To each their own. I think it's fair to say they were the most influential British band of the 80s. A complete enigma that shunned media and band status - how many others refused to get caught up in the celebrity of band culture - not many. Working class lads from Salford making music about the Government and establishment exploitation. They get my vote.

.....to be fair, can't really disagree with that assesment.......it's just that Morrisey, like Samuel Becket, is more influential than enjoyable.....lol

I saw Morrisey at Pink Pop http://www.pinkpop.nl/page.php?pagID=219 earlier this year. He really needs to get a handle on himself, he is so up his own arse. I have to admit he was eclipsed by Paul Weller and out done in the angst dept. by Placebo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRvRO20kvx8

A fast reply to both MC and philosophy.

Morrisey today is not for me. A large part of the appeal of The Smiths was the political context in which they played in the 1980s and they were a band rather than an individual - much of the music was written by Jonny Marr. I wouldn't pay to see Morrisey - as said, not my cup of tea. I'm surprised to hear philosophy found them depressing as for many they were an inspiration, uplifting even - their music and attitude was a big fuck you to Thatcher, the monarchy and those lording it in an era where many were living in a harsh background -  I suppose people see things differently but for me this band represented the 1980s Britain I belonged to. Also, The Smiths were a very introspective and thought provoking band and I would have thought anyone on this board would have appreciated that.

Paul Weller - I've seen him a few times in London and Manchester and while he's decent enough he's not even on the same planet as The Smiths. In my opinion, of course. He is quoted as saying he refuses to be labeled middle class just because he has money so he's alright in my book.

Back on topic. Three French groups worth a look. Mano Negra, Les Negresse Vertes and Pigalle. Most Brits dismiss French music out of hand without knowing anything about it but there is some interesting stuff around.

...it was that introspection that did for me.....during the 80's i was involved in direct action, The Smiths didn't sound like a clarion call to arms for me...more a call for more barbituates in bedsits....lol

lol, the beauty of music and politics I suppose (influencing different people in different ways). Personally, I don't see the connection between self-examination and lack of action but there you go. It has always been a problem that so many on the left will find so much to disagree on - even the political militancy created by a music band!
