*Notices that the OP has only one post and has not returned to address the issue - pretty typical.* 0

SirEndipity -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 6:39:07 PM)

Lots of responses, I'll try to address all your points.  I'm fairly certain that it was either a server error or else she was using some sort of a program to "bomb" me.  There is no way that she was entering them in manually.

As far as the people who cried BS, I'm a little confused.  I came in a) to vent, b) to bring the problem to someone's attention (since there isn't a way to send a personal message on the message report) and c) to find out if anyone else had the same problem.  I'm not really sure why I would want to come in here for the first time and make stuff up.  Doesn't seem to be any point to that, but if that's what you want to believe then so be it.

Is there a way to report this problem?

Amaros -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 6:46:53 PM)

The cut and paste function is disabled in the on site IM text box, so she is one fast typer, or it was a hiccup in the server.

1) There should be a per-minute cap on how many messages you can send, no more than 5 maybe, certainly less than 100 (I think I saw about 140 messages per minute in some cases).
2) There should be a per day limit on messages you can send.
3) You ought to be able to do a mass delete on more than 20 messages at a time.
4) Blocking a user should allow you to automatically delete all the messages from them if you want.
5) Reporting messages should have some category that better fits this problem (the spam option, which I chose, says "This message appears to be a solicitation mailed randomly to numerous users" which didn't really fit cause it was not a solicitation and it was only mailed to me.

Okay.  So, because of either a glitch in the system or a very talented psychopath, CM should make 5 changes to its messaging system?  Wow.  That's megalomania.

You wasted minutes deleting the messages.  We, collectively, wasted hours replying.

Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoy being an asshole, so I wasted no time, and find your quest to entertain me commendable.

Yours,

benji

(I could believe 4,773...but 6,000?  I don't think so pal).

NastyDaddy -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 8:48:17 PM)

(360 pages) x (20 messages per page) = 7,200 so where did the other 1,200 go?

Missokyst -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 9:02:49 PM)

It may have been an email bomb.  Those things do exist and since it went into your mail, and not this forum, it COULD be done and very easily.  I have removed more than a few of these from clients computers.
Bet this experience will make you take a step back before emailing, huh?

I sent someone a message.  She sent back 6000 messages!  Within the space of an hour.

SirKenin -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 9:10:53 PM)

I always thought they had a time limit over there, the same as they do here?  It tells you you can not post a message within so many minutes of each other.  Is that not the case?

I have been able to cut and paste from outside of the email, for example web addresses and from word.

NastyDaddy -> RE: She sent me 6000 messages! (9/19/2006 10:37:17 PM)

I'm sure CM's server has mail relaying disabled... disallowing any external mailers or scripts, only allowing CM mailserver calls from CM server based scripts (originating IP must be CM server).

This is not to say one couldn't copy the mail form element command and make it a commamnd line in the browser address field, or even write a server based script to redundantly call the CM server command from a remote server "X" number of times.

Given that the OP states the original reply message was replicated within itself with each redundant sent copy, that makes it sound like some form of logic was used ($msg = "mesage text"; $msg = ($msg + $msg)...) or to that effect using a variable string.

It is also very possible it was a CM mailserver error loop functioning in a similar "logical mode" to create redundantly increasing child copies of the parent message... in error while awaiting a sent confirmation it never saw.

Sure, the user can use CTRL + V to paste inside the mail editor form, but they would be very busy at doing that 6,000 times.

Lots of possibilities, to include some sinister ones as well as some rather innocent ones.

Was there something about those changes that you didn't like?  They seem like some pretty basic safeguards to me.  Ok, so maybe most people won't need them most of the time, but when you do, you really appreciate them.

As far as the time you wasted replying, well that was your choice.  You could have passed the thread by.  Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky.  (I like being able to see when I get new messages, which I wouldn't be able to do unless I read or deleted all 6000 messages.  Otherwise it would have perpetually shown that I had "new" messages)

Thanks for the welcome!   :)

P.S. and for irony's sake.... when I went to post this message I was informed that I can't post multiple messages in such a short amount of time.  LOL

Welcome to the forums newly42.   I look forward to more of your posts.   M

Looked for your profile for sending a personal note, but couldn't find it.
Is everything alright?
Thanks for the nice welcome.
