juliaoceania -> Name of a Thread Changing (9/11/2006 11:47:43 PM)

I have noticed that long train wreck-type threads seem to have their names changed midway through. Why does this happen, and who changes the name?

NastyDaddy -> RE: My dog's name is Spot (9/11/2006 11:51:59 PM)

On the reply screen the title is listed also, and is editable.

ooohhhhhh... I did not know this... thanks!

Level -> RE: LMAO @ My dog's name is Spot (9/12/2006 3:04:48 AM)

Thanks, that clears that up.

MasterFireMaam -> Huh...never knew you could change the name of the thread. (9/12/2006 8:18:14 AM)

Testing it!

An additional way to fan flames, if the embers wane.

And it's generally ill-advised to do so, for one obviously the confusion that it causes and it's harder to find a thread later.

Frankly I'd just be happy with people starting threads with decent titles.  Threads that have a subject of "Question" or "What if..." or "Not sure what to do" are really bad.

Things like "Confused about trust" or "Punishment Predicament" are much more decriptive and easier to follow.

Or like this one- great subject title.

^5s LA...

(that's a pet peeve of mine (obscure titles), I'm embarrased to say.  Obviously some don't program or use data-bases!   LOL )

There.

Chaingang -> RE: Confused About Trust (9/12/2006 11:34:41 AM)

Wait, it didn't take did it?

Edit: It doesn't change the thread name on the thread index, but it does change it in the thread itself. In the thread I find it pretty easy to ignore.

siouxie -> RE: so it does (9/12/2006 11:35:46 AM)

just had to try, hope you don't mind

Chaingang -> WTF? (9/12/2006 11:37:36 AM)

Hey now, knock it off...!

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: WTF? (9/12/2006 11:40:59 AM)

It also changes it on the thread page.  So it would appear as if some other thread or new thread has been started, when it's actually just a reply to a pre-existing thread.

On mailing list type groups, changing thread names is preferred when the topic has wandered off topic or spun off onto a new topic.  Often the thread will start off as "Cold play (was Re:torture)" to let people know a new thread had started based off of a previous thread.

On a posting board type group like this, it's much simpler and straightforward to just start a new thread with a new title.

It's always ill-advised to just change the topic of a thread on a whim or just because one is replying.

Chaingang -> RE: WTF? (9/12/2006 11:47:17 AM)

Under the heading "Off Topic Discussion" where it lists the thread names for that forum the name has not changed. So what do you mean, LuckyAlbatross?

When you go one level up on the forums listings, it lists the last post title posted since the page was refreshed.  If the subject line has changed, it cannot be told whether it's the same topic or a new topic until you go down to that specific forum level.
