Status: offline 		I guess for me it really doesnt matter.  I do agree with the consider the source but I also enjoy being called "female". There is just something about being called a "woman" for some reason makes me feel really old.  I much prefer "girl" or "lady" or "wench" over woman any day and feel the same about female.

Thank you.  I'm glad that somebody sees my point.  And, by the way, I've been known to not only use the phrase "The Female of the Species" but to recite Rudyard Kipling's entire bloody poem by that title.  One of my absolute favorites.

Status: offline 		On this site, it does seem that women are often referred to as females, same with the alternate gender.  I suppose it does have to do with the fact that we identify ourselves that way when we sign up.  Female and male dominant or female or male submissive/slave/switch are how we define ourselves.  Woman dominant or man dominant aren't common references. 

I prefer the term woman most of the time, though there are circumstances when female sounds better.  All females are female, but not all females are women, so 'woman' adds a bit more definition.  I do find myself biased in the respect that I am less likely to use the term "men" or "man", and I think that stems from the fact that I am used to referring to male submissives as "males", and by my preference for a female-led relationship. 

I find no offense in "female", but "woman", just has a little more power to it.... as to me, does "man", vs "male".

I don't mind the source.... he asks a lot of questions, he is often wordy, but he thinks outside the box, and from what I have seen, he tends to be respectful of others, despite whether I agree with what he has said or not.  Perhaps I have missed something.

There are alot of posters who I dont enjoy reading, for whatever reason. 

Just skip over them, or ignore them  

Using someone's  post out of context coupled with an insincere bullshit question in order to start a hate-fest on another CM poster, is pretty lame.

I often use the designations of male and female in my writing and speech. I prefer speaking in literal, base-animal terms (especially in this "gendered" society), and I don't think it takes too much of a mental leap to assume you're speaking of humans. As to this habit of mine offending your delicate sensibilities, oh well. Your insistence of using terms like "man" and "woman" seems equally silly to me.

I was putzing around on that stupid blogthings website and saw one of those poll thingies. The title of it is something like this "Are you a Girl or a Woman?" Wellllllllll, being the curious 44 year old broad that I am I thought, "what the hell!" and I took this silly lil ol poll. They determined that I am.........drum roll please............. A Woman!!!............Tadaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

So there! It's been decided.

Respectful?  *laughs*  Yes, MistressLorelei... you've missed something, and be thankful that you have.

To the OP...

I understand your position very clearly, and I agree that there is a note of derision present when the term "female" is used exclusively.  Personally, I've no overt issues with being called a female, but it's not my preference.  To me, I believe that such terms as female, woman, lady, and the like have very subtle connotations that conjure an emotional feel and add depth.

Female evokes a feeling of stark, cold and impersonal... clinical.  This isn't necessarily negative.  While in the Army, I was always referred to as a female.  As the military operates with a detached and methodical approach, it was appropriate in that venue.

Woman creates a feel that is warmer, sexier, intimate and more natural.   I may be one of the few, but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I'm addressed simply as "woman". 

Lady seems to be both impersonal and aloof. 

*laughs*  And having decided to check the dictionary, I find the following comparison:
Woman, female, lady are nouns referring to adult human beings who are biologically female; that is, capable of bearing offspring. Woman is the general term. It is neutral, lacking either favorable or unfavorable implication, and is the most commonly used of the three: a wealthy woman; a woman of strong character, of unbridled appetites. In scientific, statistical, and other objective use, female is the neutral contrastive term to male and may apply to plants and animals also: 104 females to every 100 males; Among lions, the female is the chief hunter. Female is sometimes used in disparaging contexts: a gossipy female; a conniving female. Lady meaning “refined, polite woman” is a term of approval or praise: a real lady in all things; to behave like a lady.
As a side note, while women are often referred to as "girls", if I'm individually called that by someone with whom I have only a casual aquaintance, it grates on my nerves.  Although I know it usually isn't intentional, it feels as if I'm considered to have not grown up.  Now, if it's someone with whom I'm intimate... that's an entirely different story.

*whispering*  Angelic... the slash ( / ) means "end", so anything you want to quote would have "quote" in brackets at the beginning, and "/quote" in brackets at the end.   (I had to substitute quotation marks for the brackets in my explanation or part of it would have ended up in a quote box. )
