An alternative to doweling in cabinetry is dove-tailing. Small wooden dowel rods are used as pins, to glue wooden pieces together with a wooden dowel rod insereted/glued into pre-drilled holes in the wood pieces being joined. Very similar to steel reinforcing bars (rebar) used in poured concrete fixtures, bridges, roadways, etc. Dove-tailing is sawing the mating edges into opposing patterns that fit snugly together, whether glued or not. Dowel rods are used in BDSM play for whipping, or caning, either singular dowel rods or bundled together to be similar to a bamboo cane (used in Thailand and other garden spots for public court ordered punishments/beatings). It is adviseable to start out with wooden dowels of a smaller diameter... before progressing to aluminum or steel dowel rod stock. Doweling and rodding are somewhat synonymous terms.
