Help! I'm looking for advice on how an introvert turns off her mind long enough to participate fully in scenes. I assume it's a form of conditioning. I'm interested in all responses, especially from those in the pyschology fields.

More info - I'm an introvert. Not new to the lifestyle, but almost no real time experience. My head is always ON; I'm always thinking. I need to learn to flip the switch to simply experiencing something physical.. for example: eating pineapple. While I was eating it, I'd be thinking about it as well. I couldn't just let go and enjoy the experience. I'd have to measure it, compare it, quantitfy it.

So: how do I learn to focus only on what my body feels while eating this pineapple? On the sensations it gives me.

You need an outlet for the energy and a way to silence the chatter. People typically adopt an exercise program or meditation to understand the properties of stillness. It is possible to begin by sitting quietly for five minutes each day and expanding from there. If you're inclined I'd recommend beginning a personal journal. It is a wonderful form of self expression and you are free to ramble to your heart's content. You may find that this significantly reduces your preoccupation with overanalyzing and distraction. The latter two things are common when the mind is overactive. If you need additional tips feel free to contact me.

Mina,
Why would you want to turn your mind off? Does your partner wish you to turn your mind off? The mind should be focused on the shared experience. Being introverted can be an asset if it has provided the opportunity to discover you minds pleasure and your body, as a tool, is best used for that ultimate pleasurable outcome.

You best "participate fully in scenes" when you go into them with a mind trusting the yourself and the other person or persons you are sharing the experience. You shouldn't desire for your mind to "turn off", instead you should have a goal of freeing it to experience the scene fully. Beyond the physical aspect of the sensation is a place your mind goes where to experience a mind orgasm or catharsis. All it takes in trust in yourself and your partner(s). There in no shortcut to how this level of trust can be obtained; time and familiarity.

Hello Mina35,

In Buddhist meditation practices, the head space you are describing is euphemistically known as the "monkey mind" because it bounces around from place to place chattering it's fool head off.

One aspect to WIITWD which bottom types experience is known euphemistically as "flight."  This is basically the endorphin overload from experience pain and/or submission, and one result of this is (from what I have read and been told) is the cessation of mental chatter.  For me (Dom/Top), my experience during play is similar insofar as, while not endorphin based, is one of a peak (adrenalin, et al) experience. 

I have not viewed your profile, so I am uncertain where you self-identify, but I would suggest you take a multi-pronged approach to it.

1) Exercise, especially somewhat strenuous, will cause your body to flood your brain with a small amount of endorphins on a constant basis to deal with the fatigued muscle's pain signals.

2) Some form of meditation, or quiet reflection,

3)  Take long walks and focussing on simply looking at things and not thinking.  What this will do is teach your brain, over time, to stop chattering to itself and to view the world around you.  This will happen gradually; there is no quick fix short of lobotomy or drugs.

4) Try eating some ice cream, or whatever, and simply stop your mind from quantifying it, etc., in the moment.  Focus on attempting to find the subtle nuances in the flavors.  What to a wine taster would be referred to as "the notes."

5)  You could try the approach that cured me of it back in the late 1980s which was sparring multiple people (better than me) with me in the center.  Get both pain and ability to be focussed/unfocussed in one fell swoop.

Mina, it is more a shift of focus, i agree that  meditation would be a great way for you to learn to shift your focus to the "physical" . 
It's funny that you make a reference to fruit ( pineapple is my favorite!)  because to me...fruit is very erotic and eating it is downright sensual .

Maybe a little experiment is called for.....
The next time you eat some fruit, close your eyes, bite into that fruit  very slowly..(it should be something very juicy like pineapple...melons.etc.) and think of nothing else but the texture of it on your tongue, the juices exploding   in your mouth as you chew slowly..take the time to taste it , enjoy it completely....pure sensation

Not trying to be a smart ass here but if your brain is still capable of that kind of thinking during a scene you are not engaged in it fully and to me that says the level of stimulation you need might not be there.

This has worked for me:  Tuning in to the Dom's voice, and pain.  Pain has a way of  focusing a person, LOL

I can have a problem with shutting myself up sometimes, and a friendly Dom helped me with solving the problem.

I'm in agreement w/ spankmepink. The concept here is to close off all other means of sensation, sight, sound, touch, smell, then have the fruit fed to you.  Then focus strickly on the texture & taste.  Start w/ a less tart fruit, progress toward more and more tart, much like wine tasting.  Have at least 3 or 4 available.
 
After you have done that try some tactile sensations.  Again limit all of your other senssations as w/ the fruit.  The important thing to do is to manage to relax when you begin & through the experiment.

Some other things that might help would be blindfolds and earplugs -- cut off stimuli that could get you thinking instead of experiencing.

I have a strong internal monolog and have a very wandering mind due to having ADD. What I find works for when I want to turn down the monolog is to turn up the sensory input. I used to have a TV, radio, and CD all going at once in the background, it makes it take a little more work to pull a thought into the front of my head, but not enough to stop me from what I'm doing.

Really, try things and see what works, your mind may vary.
I suspect blocking things off(blindfolds and such) will just make it worse because there will less to ground your senses and your mind to the world.

Two main methods- one as mentioned is simple meditation.  Practice focusing yourself and it will become a natural part of your behavior.

The other is to just be over-stimulated.  It will eventually drive yourself into it.

Finally, you're new.  You're processing.  Give it some time and you should settle down and be able to just have fun with it.
