KenDckey -> Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 4:35:07 AM)

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-walmart23aug23,0,2463162.story?coll=la-opinion-center

The LA times in their OP Ed section reported that democratic politicians may be in trouble for Walmart bashing.  Apparently they are doing this to gain support with the unions.   The employees of Walmart have consistantly voted against organizing.

Aparently Walmart pays prevailing wage (I know my gf and my grandson got raises for that reason).

Aparently Walmart does not pay for as much medical as the unions would like (both my gf and my grandson have walmart medical insurance through Walmart).

Aparently shoppers at Walmart voted mostly in favor of bush at the last election where those that have NEVER shopped at Walmart voted Kerry.   I find it hard to believe that there are that many people have never shopped at Walmart whit his 1.3 million emplohyees and stores just about everywhere.

Is the LA Times so out of touch with it's democratic base or are the politicians out of touch?  For once, I usually disagree with the LA Times Op Ed section, I believe that it is the politicians.

I know lots of people who do not shop at Walmart for various reasons, most of them having to do with their political and social views, Walmart's labor policies and unfair pricing practices. A lot of people don't like the idea of Walmart driving business away from local businesses who are invested in the community. For others, the big ugly box shape built out on the highway when areas zoned for business within cities crumble in decay is enough to repulse them.

Then again, lots of people love Walmart and don't have any problem with their practices.

Walking into a Walmart store feels like visiting another planet for me...a planet inhabited by the Walmartians. It gives me a headache. I do not do my shopping there, and I voted for Kerry so "the politicians" counted at least one of us correctly.

I shop at Walmart (although I hate going there) and I did not vote for Bush!!!

The editorial/opinion section is not the opinion of the LA Times, nor is it "news".  It's just the thoughts and opinions of one writer, likely a republican writer.... or maybe a guy who just really likes Walmart.  It's as much "news"  as my post right here.

Next time, at least be fair and also post the editorial from the guy who claims all republicans are aliens trying to invade the world.  I might be more inclined to believe that one.

I have an in with a newspaper, perhaps I should write that editorial myself....

Have a grain of salt with that editorial next time... at least that's what I did.

For the record.  I don't like Walmart at all.  They hire an awful lot of employees who work just under the amount of hours for which they would qualify for medical benefits.  Besides Target is so much more aesthetically pleasing.

Costco pays its employees so much that wallstreet bitches and wants them to drop them.  The CEO of Costco laughs and says our shrinkage is near zero and our retention rates saves us tons of money on training.

Shop Costco

Sam's Club is Wallmart so they and their republican shoppers can kiss my ass.

Termyn8or -> RE: Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 8:31:54 AM)

My Maternl Grandmother was taught by a Mother who was raised in a communist country. The OP, like her, was taught to be happy with what you have.

Fuck all that. Do the math, you got minimum wage and shit for benefits, yet ten or twenty miles down the road there are quarter million dollar houses being built. This doesn't even require math.

Anywhere you work, whatever you do, like my Paternal Grampa told me "MAKE THEM PAY YOU". I am about ready to quit a $20 an hour job, and that's take home. Fukum, figure out how much you make them and take a third. If they won't pay it, move on.

I almost feel sorry for these poor fucks that need to take these asshole jobs, but that is from the time when I was homeless. Fuck Walmart, fuck all the big companies and banks, and definitely fuck the government. But you did have a good time when you were young huh, and now you got no fucking skills. Go figure.

You poor people don't realise that rich people are the enemy. They get rich as you make them money. How hard is that to understand ? I know a guy makes $400 an hour, know what he does ? He runs around writing estimates and selling brickwork jobs. His employees who actually do the work make anywhere from $10 to $25 an hour.

Do you get the picture here ?

I have been homeless, but I would never take a minimum wage job, no fucking way. I negotiate my own compensation. What they pay you is your business. I am not saying that I don't care that they exploit you, I am saying that ONLY YOU can do something about it.

T

PS, FUCK WALMART

What are some people supposed to believe?

Whole Foods Market also pays their employees well,  provides them with excellent benefits... and Whole Foods is doing quite well on the business side of things.  If you don't have one in your area now.... you likely will.

Treat your employees well, they will stay, they will support your company.... otherwise all you get is a bunch of employees working against the company untill they find a better one.  This costs more money in the long run than paying and providing what is fair to begin with.

A local Walmart blew down last hurricane season...  I hope they aren't expecting any "charity" from the government when it comes to rebuilding.

I think the post was directed at the OP for believing the editorial/opinion  in question.  Like 'don't believe everything you read'... though some people will believe anything.

In my opinion.... some people should believe that supporting a corporate bully who wants to line its pockets with the blood and sweat of its under-waged, under-benefited employees, is like supporting George Bush and administration.

I choose to spend my money elsewhere.

A Walmart apologist?

In Califonria (my state) Walmart expect ME to pay for their lack of benefits and low pay they give their employees by showing them how to file for our state medical aid for themselves and their families. I am paying for walmart's low prices with my tax dollar.. this PISSES ME OFF. They are a rich corporation, why do I have to pay for their employee's medical care? Another example of corporate freaking welfare...I am a proud walmart boycotter. Here is a link to what I am talking about  http://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/lowwage/walmart.pdf#search=%22walmart%20california%20medi-cal%22

Whole Foods does indeed do a great job with employees and remains quite profitable. I think Starbucks does well too, but I'd have to doublecheck that.

KenDckey -> RE: Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 10:11:41 AM)

Hmmmmmmmm   Walmart is a bully with unfair pricing practices?   You mean guaranteeing the lowest price in town is unfair?

Walmart pays prevailing wage.   That is unfair because it is too little?

Walmart hires to many employees so it doesn't have to pay medical (remember my grandson who unloads trucks gets medical).

We have little choice in shopping at Walmart.   The closest thing comperable is 100+ miles away.  That being beside the point I still would shop at Walmart.  Just like I shop at the Dollar Store (which has some stuff even cheaper than Walmart).  To me it is a matter of personal economics - I am on a fixed income.

It is like those people that wn't buy anything except American.   Ever see the movie Arrmogedden?  "Russian equipment, American equipment, it is all the same - the components are all made in Taiwan."

Yes, to some people, ensuring poor people have enough to eat is unfair.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 10:20:17 AM)

Could you restate that one, please?  Because...it doesn't make any sense.  If I hire one employee, I have to pay medical; but if I hire 40,000, I don't?

You did not address my comment. Therefore I will assume you think it is ok for walmart to have their employees sucking off the taxpayers of my state... I do not agree with you and I am boycotting them, so does my Dom

popeye1250 -> RE: Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 10:24:56 AM)

Crappy, Julia, count me in too!
I haven't stepped foot into a Walmart for five years now ever since they had that hiring illegal aliens scandal.
I shop at Costco because I read an article online that said they pay their employees very well and give them great benefits.
If I'm going to spend my money in a store I want to know that the people taking care of me are being taken care of!
Also the Walmart employees didn't seem very happy and some of them were downright surly.
Costco employees are downright cheerfull.
With their pay and benefits I think their average pay rate is $18-$20 per hour, true, not a lot of money today but much better than Walmart.
Oh, I voted for neither Bush nor Kerry.
Constitution Party all the way!

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Democrats may be in trouble for walmart bashing (8/27/2006 10:53:06 AM)

There is no Costco around here.
