I was just wondering, why do people on these boards, not check their spelling before hitting the OK button?

Sometimes typos sneak in, but so often, a good post is ruined, by spelling and grammar errors.  Or, do people just not care?

captiveplatypus -> RE: pet peeve (8/18/2006 3:26:59 PM)

I know my spelling sucks and hope people forgive me. :(  I try not to do it too badly, but I won't be offended if someone corrects me.  I learn by public humiliation, sometimes. [;)]

Termyn8or -> RE: pet peeve (8/18/2006 4:19:33 PM)

I think many people think phonetically, thus the confusion between there, their and they're, and to, too and two.

You wanna talk peeve ? I am annoyed to no end when people refer to a license in the plural form, this I think is due to the same phonetic thinking, it ends with the S sound. Another is the month of febUary, or the libary. Nucular weapons bother me as well.

Even with the misspellings, people don't seem to know how to use the enter key to make a line break, thus creating paragraphs. If these are the same people who think phonetically, perhaps they are the ones who never shut up ?

On another board I translated a post by "jamesthehumanrug". He doesn't know what an enter key is, and not only is the spelling off, the grammar is too, and he has no concept of the distinction between a comma and a period. This post was only about ten lines long, but it was the first headache I got in decades. I didn't do it again.

Unfortunately I must agmit to being imperfect. For the first 40 odd years of my life (some of them were pretttty odd too) I misspelled origin. Really, origion looked perfectly right until I looked at origional a few times, well many times.

If you think it's bad here, get on a P2P network (the almost illegal ones) and when you search for a tune you must run two or three searches, using different misspellings of your search terms.

BTW  mystiquenz, the second comma in your first sentence should have been replaced by the word 'and', and the second should have been omitted. Just a word to the wise, these errors are minor and did not ruin the post :-)

checks in and just chuckles quietly,

yes yes and yes ...

none of U/us are perfect and many do not give the proverbial F**k ... however, there is always room for improvement, including my own ... *swallows hard*

Enjoy the upcoming weekend! ...

On Edit: I really do not care personally if people have typos (I have them often myself) Or misspell words. If it is that bad I skip the post.

PeterK50 makes me do it!

windchymes -> RE: pet peeve (8/18/2006 7:17:26 PM)

Back in the days before computers, I wonder if people posted notes on grocery store bulletin boards and took out ads in the newspapers bitching at people for misspelling words and chastising them for not carrying dictionaries around in their pockets.

Religion, spelling and republicans.  You would think there would be something else to talk about.

Many of are messages are written late at night after a hard days of work. The eyes and fingers are tired not being too keen on fixing silly typos. Many messages written during the day are quick replies that people try to slip in when on lunch break are between task. Speed beats accuracy in these cases.

Not to mention, some replies are known to be more passionate motivated by emotion over logic. When are emotions speak, they are not always typed out and thought out as they are when written with logic.

In many cases, over looking your own writting does not do much good. When you think what you type, you usually only see what you thought you typed. As my english teacher once told me, the best way for someone to proof read there own work is to read it backwards.

Does this help explain anything to you?

God must want me to have a taste of Hell. My AC in my car is not working.  Going back home in 5pm Dallas traffic is a place of torture all on its own.

August + Texas x Traffic - AC = HELL.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: pet peeve (8/18/2006 10:09:34 PM)

I honestly just don't care.  Also some of things I do that might be precieved as a typo were on purpose like n instead of and and dun instead of don't. it's my personal choice to do that:)

These are funny!  [:D]

As luck has it for me, the minute I correct someone else, I make the same mistake. Quite humbling.
