Yep, I'd call it satire - but they have some pretty funny pieces!

It is satire, never was intended as anyhting else. Bit of a wrench to put it in the off-topic forums without "Onion Reports:" oer something to that effect.

Great news article…. It totally identifies with part of the ‘’Federalist Society’’ dogma known as the ''Unitary Executive'' - Also a ''Straussian'' concept

It’s an unconstitutional doctrine that grants absolute dictatorial powers to the ''President'' during times of national crisis / emergency. It completely undermines the checks and balances / separation of powers built into the system

Total proof that ever since 9-11 they have been very committed in calling for a ‘’roll back’’ of post-Watergate infringements related to Presidential power.

As was one longtime poster mentioned some time ago  '' We are ripe for Dictator. People are STARVING for someone to take charge and be pragmatic to the issues at hand. With one more or larger scale 9/11 this may seem like the good old days. ''

Sad but true....

 - R

Edited to add:  Some think its funny.... but read Samuel Alito's dossier {with regard to  the Senate questioning his participation  in the ''Federalist  Society'' }

Err... you do know that "The Onion" is a humor magazine that makes the articles up from thin air right? They bring up valid and timely  issues, but no article from The Onion can be considered as proof of anything.

Please tell me this is a tongue in cheek article? Puuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese.

(because if it's real;.. I wonder if anyone is thinking I was that far off compairing Hitler's rise to power and dictatorship to Bush's regeime?)  I wouldn't put it past him to try for a 3rd Term-saying  "Y'all NEED Me to FIX this world!"

Everything in "The Onion" is tounge-in-cheek. It isn't a news source, it's satire of news and current events.

That said I agree that President Noxious-Weed would say exactly that.

Of course didn't you know that GW Bush uses the Onion as his main source of worldly information.... Now of course he'll try to follow the lead of the faithfull Onion and go for a new executive powers like President for Life, Adopting Iraq as the newest State of the Union. Who knows he may ever adopt Isreal as another fully fledged US State as well.... I'm sure the NSC owns and runs CM to get a wider knowledge of what his subjects are doing too. Perhaps we are all part of the Bush Intelligence Think-Tank

*LOL* Yep, as noted above (perhaps not loudly enough) The Onion is satire.  They take some strange/unsettling ideas that are in the news a lot (like Bush usurping governmental powers), and then exaggerate them to be beyond strange.  I was *ROLLING* when I read this one!

Here are a couple of other goodies...
That always free-spending NASA with a new idea...

If you recall Dick Cheney campaigning for re-election during the 2004 season with a pitch of "Re-elect us or die!", you'll enjoy...

That particular article is a joke. But they are working to broaden and reinterpret presidential power.

This is what I thought it may have been an off-shoot of:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/04/30/bush_challenges_hundreds_of_laws/

"signing statements"

"signing statements"

It absolutely is an off-shoot of that.  A great many legal scholars and historians have said that Mr. Bush has made a completely unprecedented expansion of presidential powers, often with questionable legal basis for doing so.  I am neither a historian nor a legal scholar, but I don't think that everyone can be wrong.

In any case, I just thought The Onion article was very funny... I grow a little tired of the bickering in some of the threads is all, and thought others might appreciate a little levity.

The Onion is satire, but what makes it 'humorous', is that it's not far from the truth.  Bush, through his signing statements has noted in writing that he will not be bound by more than 750 laws passed by congress.  He has created more signing statements than every other President in history combined.  I do believe Bush thinks he is above the law, thus granting himself the option to disobey 750+ laws.  The Onion, while, it's humerous and un-newsworthy, can also be frighteningly accurate.

Edited to note:  I was typing my post while LotusSong posted hers...  excuse the duplicate reference, etc.
