Status: offline 		People worried about Y2K so now looking back was it too much hype or did all the hype force people to make changes to software thus preventing a catastrophe?

Worry by itself is always useless taking an open eyed look at the dangers present in the world today and having a basic survival plan is smart.

I forgot about that example. I don't think there was any real danger there. Many were predicting a catastrophe. I did nothing to prepare for it and came through just fine. It's just funny how the media will run with something and contribute to the hysteria.

Thank god I survived the ....well whatever it was flu sort of thing that caused a fuss in Toronto......oh yeah SARS. It would have been more memorable with a higher death toll or animal link.

Panda flu!!! Now that would really make some headlines. Cute Kitten Flu. CNN is just waiting for it.

You are right and wrong. Viruses, bacteria etc don't give a damn where they breed and strengthen in. Animals? Human beings are animals. We breed things in us, animals breed there things, they can cross over various species links. It's shhhhh Evolution.  A fantasy for many, but a disease for the faithful or not. The most common transition point is areas where people live in close proximity to livestock. But it can happen anywhere at anytime. We have intensive security at biohazrd labs for fragile viruses etc. But mother nature is a big wide open harsh reality lab for the real thing. No airtight doors.
As human beings develop intelectual abilities ( big brains barely squeezing through birth canals ) nature keeps breeding things to challenge our big brains and medicines/machines.
There are things cooking out there in wild hard nature that will come up against our brains. It is the evolutionary test. Brains and technology versus the almost infinite and patient lab of nature. Place your bets. Are we the top dog?

Status: offline 		Uhh, Estring, what does either one of those comments have to do with anything?  There's no argument that bird flu exists, either.  The argument has to do with whether you think the whole thing is just being hyped by the media, or whether it's really a serious issue that merits public attention.

How about this one--as a voter in a democratic country, you're obliged to know as much as you can about such issues, so that you can make informed decisions when you're called upon to vote.  After all, the institutions that have to be in place (and properly funded) in order to monitor the disease are federal institutions.  "Leave it to the scientists until it becomes a disease that might affect me" is hardly the attitude that leads to informed decisions at the ballot box.

Status: offline 		I thought the thread was an excuse to justify why people shouldn't bother to take some easy precautions and be a little more aware of their health, etc... just in case.  I don't care who wants to or doesn't want to be aware of the possibility of another pandemic, like many in our history's past.  I just find it ironic that many people who scream "hysteria" about the bird flu then rant on the gun threads about how guns are necessary to "protect" themselves from the government.  At least be consistent about your hysteria.  I guess it's not as much fun to watch your health, and stock up a little on food and water, as it is to fire off a gun.
