I mean, other than backing the side fighting the side we were backing.

Um, you realise US armed ISIS against Assad right?
Whereas Russia is actually wanting to put down ISIS.

I know, right? I mean, someone please explain that one!?

Explanation:
ISIS conquered their American weaponry when defeating the US supplied Iraqi army at their conquest of Mosul and other northern Iraqi districts.
Russia is wanting to destroy any anti Assad forces. Since IS in Syria - at the moment - is no big threat to the major cities like Damascus or the coastal areas but keeps to the central north and north-east destroying IS is not top of the list for Putin. Maybe this will change. Right now Putin and Assad have other priorities.

The US was also arming anti-Assad rebel groups, but not the ones who had already sided with ISIS. Some, though, have joined in with ISIS since being armed.
But, what right do we have to arm anti-Assad rebels anyway?

What right does the US have to arm the rest of the world?
Selling guns is what we do.

I don't think the US Government was really selling the weapons to the rebels. There's a difference between arming them and selling them arms.

Do they love us yet

'I HAVE CONFIRMED EVIDENCE' Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims US-led coalition forces have 'supported ISIS'

The head of state claims the coalition has given support to terror groups including ISIS and Kurdish militant groups YPG and PYD

I read that our goal was to weaken Syria since they are an ally of Iran.

Armed ISIS while giving Iran faster access to nukes, ballistic missiles and billions in cash

Yep. That sums it up.

Maybe we're hoping Iran and Russia will help us if China gets out of hand? While at the same time trying to control somewhat just how strong Iran and Russia can be???

Because the USA was asked for help ...?

Who asked us to help in Syria?

Of course I did not take part in the negotiations but there were reports in 2013 that training the FSA was done by US personnel.

To some other rumours:
Erdogan blaming the US for supplying IS is absurdly ridiculous - pot calling kettle black. There is numerous evidence that Turkey did just that - in many ways.

So, the rebels requested help. What gives the US any authority to help the rebels?!?

Don't ask me ... What gives the US any authority to ignore so many international treaties, agreements, and regulations? If any can give answers it should be US politicians.

Russia, Iran and Turkey Meet on Syria, Excluding U.S.

The three countries met to work toward an accord to end Syria’s war. The absence of any Western powers at the table all but guarantees that President Bashar al-Assad will continue to rule Syria.

Um, when I asked what gave the US any authority to arm the anti-Assad revels, you responded that they were asked to. Considering it was the rebels that asked, and not some governmental institution (like the UN could have done), you don't want to continue the discussion anymore? Why respond in the first place?

If a US government officially or secretly decided to assist some political group abroad, as in this case the FSA, US governments did not ask any external institution (after Korea) for legitimation - to my knowledge.

Regarding Syria now the situation - as I see it these days - is as such:
FSA is defeated, USA has no immediate ally there any more, Putin got signalled that the future USA is no longer interested and is thus settling his interests with Turkey and Iran, Assad remains in office. IS is left to the Kurds and maybe later the Iranians to deal with.

They likely wouldn't have gotten it. That's why they didn't seek it.

I'm perfectly okay with the US staying out of the Syria conversation. I don't believe we have any authority to act there. Since Syria isn't a NATO country and the UN Security Council hasn't decided to do something, there isn't any treaty-bound reason we need to do anything there. And, since there isn't any direct threat to the US involved, there isn't even a real "National Security" reason to act.

I'm sure your life is easier for you when you simply make up other people's positions to suit your "counter-arguments."

But reality is, you're full of shit, again, and simply indulging your fantasies.

If you want to refute my political views, first get the ones that are actually mine.

Thanks. That will really facilitate conversation.

I actually appreciate debating with people who see things differently. But not so much the silly bullshit.
