I have always sympathized with the blue for sentimental and practical reasons, but I have to admit, the two rows of buttons on the grey oness have always looked dashing, especially on Jonah Hex.

Since 38 only sends it to the house where Trump still wins it doesn't matter.

makes me wonder if there's ever been another time in our history where such a hubbub has been made over the electors voting.

.
Yes there has, in 1800. A big enough hubbub in fact that they amended the Constitution (see 12th Amendment).

The "hubbub" is just fake news. Does anyone here who can think for themselves really believe that Democrat's death threats are going to significantly change anything?

Ah, I get it, you have no idea what the issue actually is. Got it.

1800 election when Jefferson and Burr tie in the electoral college because at the time the electors cast two votes for president at the time. This put the election in the house where John Adams supporters tried to push Burr (who was Jefferson's running mate) to embarrass Jefferson. This led to a amendment to fix the problem.

1824 election, Andrew Jackson got the most popular and electoral votes, but because their were 4 candidates for president, (John Q Adams, William Crawford, and Henry Clay) no one got the majority of the electoral votes.
Thanks to the never Jacksoners Adams was made president. This led to the formation of the Democratic party .

In both cases the key was because of the people who lost the election manipulated the system to change the outcome .

1876

Tilden Hayes
Democrats engaged in massive fraud in the south.
Tilden won those states.
Two sets of electors were sent in from those states, one set based on the vote, one set by the Federally appointed reconstruction Governors.
A panel was set up to decide which set of votes would be accepted.
There were 7 members on the panel.
3 congressional Democrats.
3 congressional Republicans.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who had never participated in party politics.
During deliberation a Senator from Ohio died, the Chief Justice ruled in favor of the Republicans, and the governor of Ohio appointed him senator.

Someone must think it would make a difference or they wouldn't be making the threats.

its not just that, its also the clamoring over getting electors to change their vote, by some mysterious moral imperative that only the left seems to be able to see.

And yet, that is still not the issue.

This is, like the first two examples I quoted, a case of the losers having their feeling hurt and trying to mess things up so they will feel better. If these tactics are rewarded we can see this sort of thing happen more and more often. If thinking you had the better candidate justifies threatening electors and lets you win, or at least de-legitimize the other guy, how many people will be willing to go that route? We can look forward to the house deciding elections in the future. It would alter us into a de facto parliamentary system, whoever controls the majority of house delegations will control who is President . Of course then they (whoever the loser is) will have to intimidate the congressmen.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, yet, but President-Elect Trump's "unofficial" count stands at 306. That means the pissy, whiny, crybabies only need to change 37 votes (306 - 37 = 269) to accomplish their attempted coup.

No, it is not a coup, it is completely within the bounds of the Constitution, and is in fact one of the purposes of the Electoral College. it is silly and ridiculously unlikely, but it is completely constitutional. Both according to the Constitution as written, and according to the expressed thoughts and reasoning of the people who wrote the Constitution.

I have an easier time sympathizing with threats from moustachioed continentals (or bearded subcontinentals) when they're menacing some part of the machine into upholding their pledge, as opposed to dictating a new one.

Hold their meters to the fire!

Sorry sorry, that was metric. It's feet to the fire.

I'm hoping we won't see Gore's theory tested, that there is no intermediate step between a supreme court decision and a violent revolution.

PS Yes I'm aware that it's a different situation (SC vs EC) but if someone feels they must post something to that effect, I hope I don't see you on Dateline's "To catch a Pedant"

My bad. 37 it is.

Or won't be.

the 12th amendment says this specifically: "they [the electors] shall name in their ballots the person voted for as president..." that seems perfectly perfunctory.

there is nothing in the amendment that gives license to electors to "vote their conscience" or to change their vote contrary to the will of the people of their state.

that doesn't mean however there aren't writings from the creators of our constitution to your point, but if there are, share them.

its interesting to consider what risk of harm the electors might put themselves, and the country at, should they have the temerity to change their vote.
