And they would be correct. There is an element of demagoguery in any politician, the deciding factor is the degree of it.

I'm still content with disagreeing. Thanks for granting a point, but I can only grant half of one in return. It's beyond your (or my) ken to protract that degree, especially in a climate where everyone accuses everyone else of using radians.

The term is all too subjective, which is what I was getting at with trying to quantify emotion, passion or prejudice.

Actually no: in this case it seems to be accurate, and saying that the Trumptooners don't use the D word doesn't make it purely subjective.

I promise to never claim the counter example of the corollary as a refutation. I think you may want to check your scratch-work; are you claiming Trump's fans' unwillingness to use the d-word is evidence for less subjectivity? I think I can trust that the boring ad hominem referred to by Peon is beneath you.

In that case, doesn't the word become meaningless?

Emotive, rather than emotional, I'd have said myself. Hysterical blather aimed at the butthurt who feel disempowered by social change.
And if that isn't demagoguery where you come from, I'd be interested to hear what is.

I don't have an issue with trump being called a demagogue, I just think it's boring.

The term is all too subjective, which is what I was getting at with trying to quantify emotion, passion or prejudice.

Is it a coincidence that the people who call him a demagogue are also the people who didn't support him?

There were several repubs and those on the right that thought so. George Will even equated him to Mussolini and a creation of a...cult of personality.

It is way to early to project what exactly he is. While he was way down my list in the primaries his cabinet selections do seem to be folks who can "get the job done". Now the question is what direction will he point them in and what job will they get done. I am all for it if he weakens the monopoly that is the Federal government and returns the power to the States where it belongs. I really don't picture him giving up power of any kind, but only time will tell.

Hence your instigation exactly in that direction by way of your OP. Got it.

I just think it's boring.

So, the notion of Trump being a demagogue is something you find boring, which as you propose, your particular notion of what is boring or not in fact defines what is reality or not.

Interesting.

If you ever come across anything in the way of politics that isn't all too subjective, please bring it to our attention posthaste.

I'm sorry Edwird, the OP wasn't exactly a clean break. I wanted to continue a discussion that had inserted itself into another thread.

Don't give me too much credit, Edwird.

Well, boring is the worst term of derision I have available for a person, idea or thing, and I only break it out a few times per calendar year.

Demagoguery, or the allegation to it, has become one of those weasel words like agitator, instigator, divisive, toxic and elitist, which, as DCNovice almost pointed out, is becoming a meaningless journalistic cliché on the same order as fuel.

In the linked article, though the author cites a few examples of fuel as a product of story in search of a by-line, his real issue with its use (it seems to me) was the use of the passive, and the cowardice of substituting the word for an argument.

</digression>

I'm starting to feel the same way about "demagogue". It would be almost bearable if its frequent appearance were agitprop, rather than my worst nightmare, that people have of their own accord, sans Cobetckuu co|-03, become boring.

This time, I'm even less convinced by your use of the w-word, but I'm of course all ears.

Or will be come tomorrow. Goodnight.

Well, you got me there.

I just don't read any of this crap anymore, haven't for years, now. So it should come as no surprise that I've totally missed out on how much the term "demagogue" has apparently and so completely overturned the order of things here lately.

Thanks for keeping me up to date.

Yeah, I don't get this continual "a word means what I believe it means, not what the dictionary says."
