Damn it. I should have guessed J.K. Rowling was lying to me.

I think that must be an Aussie version kirata; definitely not the Cornish one. I sailed out of Falmouth a few times and also sailed with a couple of crews of mad Cornishmen is how I heard of piskies and Joan the Wad. Try googling her and you may get a better response

Huh, and all this time I've been calling them pasties.

The Cornish don't call them pasties Dizzy.........they are Tiddy-Oggies *LOL* and what you get in your local bakery as a Cornish pastie is nothing like the original ones baked for the Cornish miners for their lunch.

The Cornish call their little folk 'Piskies' not pixies. One of their most famous ones is ' Joan the Wad' although how she got that name or what she is famous for, I have no idea. you will have to ask a Cornishman/woman.

I wonder if 'pixie' and 'pisky' are related to the word 'pesky'. Bit of a reach, but .... Hmm. Fun little bit of googling for me as I have my breakfast.
