ThatDizzyChick -> Libertarian Town Hall (6/22/2016 7:45:16 PM)

So I just watched the libertarian town hall on CNN, and I have to say I wasn't all that impressed.

Over all I liked Weld better than Johnson, who struck me as pretty weasely, he spent a lot of effort avoiding being nailed down on most questions.

As for their policies, well they were out to lunch on healthcare and trade, and their idea of a 28% consumption tax, but that was to be expected from a party that is essentially anarcho-capitalist in essence.

Their policy on the war on drugs was as expected, they are against the war on drugs, but want to keep all drugs but weed illegal, which is something of a contradiction, though I did like their inclination to treat drug use/addiction as more of a health issue than a criminal one.

On foreign policy they did not impress, while their anti-interventionist stance is welcome, they were completely lost with regards to Syria and ISIS, saying both that the US should not be involved and that they should be. I was also unimpressed with their grasp on the factors behind the rise of ISIS. In short their grasp of the situation in Syria and the middle east in general was pretty simplistic.

I did like their approach to the illegal immigrant issue, the fast track to an easy work visa is a good idea and their recognition that the illegals tend to take jobs that Americans don't want was realistic.

So overall I was disappointed in their performance, and in my view they nominated the wrong guy, in as much as they got their ticket upside down.

im a conservative leaning libertarian and have always found the libertarian candidates to be like the high school kids who, while they had some redeeming qualities, just didnt have enough of them such that youd wanna hang out with them.

I think what's even more odd to me is how we're so set up along the two party system that it seemingly makes a libertarian party candidate essentially non-viable.

Here you say that the libertrians don't "pack the gear" to win.

Here you say that the libertarians can't win because of the entrenchment of the two party system.
Is this a true false thing or will there be more choices?

FR:
Anybody who does this isn't libertarian enough to appeal to the purists in the armed camps, but is too libertarian for anybody who thinks that there might be a point to applying some of that free trade Ayn Rand mojo to the existing political system, besides a few denialicans who'll vote for anybody with an R after their name, anyway.
This epic fail of theirs is a surprise why, given that?

hot4bondage -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/23/2016 2:26:05 PM)

Johnson's not a very good speaker, and they both seem to be leaning to the left more than I would've expected. But they're both two-term governors, and they're not Trump or Clinton. As they try to grasp our hand just before we hit the waterfall, the least we could do is slap five.

mnottertail -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/23/2016 4:09:07 PM)

First off, they are not libertarians, they are nutsuckers in nutsucker clothing period.

WhoreMods -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/24/2016 9:13:34 AM)

I think it's one of these hypothetical state things, like Schrodinger's cat: the denialicans might possibly act like libertarians, rather than neocons if nobody is observing them, but when it comes to doing stuff or voting, their libertarian values are flexible enough to allow them to vote for big government and social control.
It's like claiming to be a Christian, despite ignoring everything that Christ ever said for these guys, right? If it's good enough for Christ, it's good enough for Rand, Shaw and Heinlein as well...

Libertarian policy is a lot of nice sounding ideas that are, truly unfortunately, removed from practical reality.

It really is a shame.

WhoreMods -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/24/2016 10:15:37 AM)

I'd have a lot more respect for libertarian ideas if more self styled libertarians actually lived by them, instead of voting Republican at every opportunity.

hot4bondage -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/24/2016 9:21:54 PM)

I get it with the live/dead cat and the perpetrators, but let's take a look under the hood...

You've got two former governors that seem like more-or-less normal people and are on nearly every ballot, and they'll be dismissed without a second thought. Something ain't right about that.

mnottertail -> RE: Libertarian Town Hall (6/25/2016 5:10:14 AM)

Well, in Johnsons case that state took in $2 Fed for every $1 laid out. Not hard to look good, if that was the situation with the entire US, he would have a resume. Even Brownback could look good in a state like that. So, he ain't really tested and aint really remarkable. Weld ain't too bad a guy, heavily backed gun control, an ultimate failure. And semi-privatized HHS and that ended up costing a bundle to the state.

They are glossed over because they are very glossable, in my opinion.
