I have both nipples pierced, got them done close to 2 months ago and aside from the healing pain of it, the process hasn't been too bad. This morning I wake up and find the the ring on my left nipple is migrating outward, I mean all the way where there's on a very thin layer preventing the ring to just pop out completely and leave my nipple opened!! I am trying to get a hold of my piercer and she comes in around noon - so I will have this looked at today, but was just curious to know if there's possible anyone here that's had this experience?

Yep ... can happen very easily & frequently esp. in piercings that are too close to the tip of the nipple (or too close to the surface of the skin in other locations) -- this happens on "flat" piercings ... i.e. on nipples that are not very large or prominent, umbilical piercings, etc. (I make sure to tweak the nipples erect before piercing, to make sure this won't happen.)  It can also happen if there is any weight/traction on the piercing, esp when it's fresh.
Unless your piercer knows a trick I've never heard of ... looks like you are gonna lose that piercing & you get to do it over later.

While I have not had any problems of that nature with my own piercings I do know that migration problems are fairly common. Sometimes it is caused by the type of jewelry, the location of piercing and sometimes it is just the make up of the person. I'm glad you are seeing your piercer today....migrating piercings can lead to infections and bad scarring.

My main concern right now is, what happens to the nipple!??? again, I am waiting on my piercing so that I can ask her all these questions, but mean while I am left to wonder, if this ring goes out all the way, which that's the way it's looking, it's barely hanging on to the nipple, the that skin regenerate itself and grow back or am i left with a split nipple! oh my..... : (

I took mine out because mine started to migrate. With things as bad as you describe them, I'd get to a doctor ASAP. I know nipples can be resconstructed, but a doctor will give you the best idea on how to proceed.

I'm not a piercer or a doctor but I have friends who have had this problem. When  a piercing migrates it happens slowly and the tissue behind the migration heals in it's wake. Not to be the bearer of bad news but yes, I have seen permanently "split" nipples being the result of such a migration.

There is absolutely nothing a Dr is going to do now that can't be done later!  This is NOT an emergency of any sort.  And, I don't personally know any doctors who'd do anything until it has healed completely anyway.  Unless you do something to prevent the piercing from healing closed (such as put a lot of peroxide or betadine or hibiclens on it), the odds are great that it will heal shut after the piercing comes out.  If it doesn't, it'll be a simple matter for a doc to fix it later -- and unless you have horribly mangled your nipple, "nipple reconstruction" should not even be a consideration.  perverseangelic is being an alarmist.  Not that you won't be left w/ a scar at the site ... but that is precisely HOW the body heals itself & that's what you have to expect when you put extra holes & cuts into yourself.

thanks ADomDoc! wow, I was getting ready to pass out (literally) before I read your post! I'm at work right now so I can't just take off to the doctor or the piercer at this point, I do have to wait until I get off work at 5:30 before I can go to my piercer. I am not that worried about the scar, but the whole split nipple thing is a bit alarming! I just went into the bathroom and started trying to take the damn ring off, but had no luck, instead it just tore more of the skin away and now it's bleeding just a bit....ugh! what a mess. I was so happy with my piercings right up until this morning!

I am the biggest baby and am wayyyy too chicken to get my nipples pierced!

But I have a friend who has both done...and experienced just what you are going through on one side.  She had that ring removed, let it heal (did you notice what the Doc here said?  Using a lot of peroxide or betadine or hibiclens on it WILL hinder healing).  A few months later, she had that side repierced and all is well!

Hope that helps,
bearlee

thank you! and thanks to all that have replied I really appreciate all your replies ... I know that the person I should be speaking with is my piercer, but like I said, I am waiting for her to return my call since they don't open until like noon, but I definitely will talk to her and have her take a look at it this afternoon. I am just so surprised at how quickly it is migrating!

I really don't think it will even stay there until the end of my work day, it's going out super fast! I tried removing it, but I just can't get that ring to open. Well, I hope that it does heal and at some point I can re pierce it, if possible...I really did love having them both pierced, the actually experience of the piercing itself was NOT at all what I imagined, it barely hurt, only for that one second but it wasn't even that big of a deal, it was actually a very nice experienced and gave me a bit of a rush, I felt like a teenager right afterward! it was very nice!

I have problems with piercings I guess because even with my ear lobes, I've had to re pierce them several times since they always get infected and such. : (  I know this is silly, but I kinda feel like a failure right now in my Master's eyes...I know he won't see it that way, and I know it's dumb, but I can't help but feel like I have dissapointed him - even though it's not my fault.

If you have a history of trouble with piercings, you'd do best to avoid them in the future.  It's not going to get any better for you, because your body clearly rejects these foreign bodies.  The recurring infections in your earlobes should have alerted you to that.

Do yourself a favor and don't pierce anything else.

I had to remove mine due to migration.  The left one was much worse than the right.  I didn't let it get toooo far out, but I could see it was twisting and was about twice as far out as the right.  A lot of women have this problem if they have rings with larger breasts. Especially if the rings are worn down.  the pressure of the bra, the weight of the breast against the bra/ piercing etc.  The bottom of the ring is pressed in towards the breast, and therefor the top part, in the nipple has more stress on it pushing outwards.  If I ever get them done again, I'll get the barbells.

My nips were pierced for years.  I had trouble with initial healing.  After a year of not being completely healed I abandoned the rings for overly long (to facilitate cleaning) barbells and they healed up in two weeks (I've seen this same scenario with dozens of women - especially women with large breasts).  The only reason I'm not currently pierced is because I had an ongoing couple of months in which I had to take diagnostics that couldn't be done with the jewelry in.  I got lazy and left them out for too long and they closed up.  It's been about three years since I let them close up.  I still have a tiny bit of scar tissue.  I miss the jewelry but am not committed enough to getting it back to deal with having them redone.  One day.

I lived with someone for a number of years who was allergic to damned near every metal.  She could only use gold and I think it had to be at least 18k or she'd migrate.  She lost one genital piercing to a caning and another just came out in her sleep (with the bead intact).  She redid it with 18k and didn't have any more problems.

Just treat it like you would any other comparable wound, don't fiddle with it, don't move the jewelry unless you've soaked it a bit first (to soften the tissues stuck to the jewelry).  Keep it clean with none perfume and lotion soap and leave it alone.  I've seen warm seasalt water soaks help some folks.  I hope your situation works out just the way you want it to!

i have both pierced, i have had problems with gold and silver so the piercer suggested niobium (sp?)  I have had no trouble with them whatsoever from the outset.  I have rings with balls and have put in other jewlery at times however i always replace it with the rings.  i have heard of those who have had piercings in their nip migrate and they had to take them out.  Evenutally the nip will heal and there will be no sign of the piercing.

Medically i would suggest taking the piercing out, keeping the nipple cleansed and closely watch for any signs of infection ie redness, drainage, increased pain etc.

I had a nipple piercing for 2 years , then suddenly it started to migrate, I just had it remove as I did not want a  split nipple. It was a 12g gold ring, I put in a larger diameter as I was told the chances of a larger diameter migrating was less. So much for that.

UPDATE:

I went to my piercer that Friday, (I was on vacation all last week) and he removed the ring before my nipple split....thank goodness! It's healing nicely but I am still sad about just having one nipple pierced...ugh. Oh well, I am glad about the fact that the nipple didn't split or get infected!!

The piercer says in about 6 months I might be able to re pierce the nipple. I plan on it!

Thanks for ALL who replied! You all gave me much needed comfort at the time I really needed it!

Muah!

xoxoxo
