Its become a sensitivity issue because SOME religious people get upset when you dont celebrate a holiday THEY think you are supposed to, THEIR way.

What has this gotta do with saying "Merry Christmas"? If Christians wanna be offended by people not celebrating Christmas, that's their problem because that's again illogical to insist that non-christian people celebrate their occasion. But for non-christians to receive "Merry Christmas" Greetings or getting offended by "Merry Christmas" decorations everywhere, just because it's not their religion, is also super stupid.

Because, I sure hell don't get upset when Hari Raya comes, and all my Muslim neighbours, start lighting up all their houses. I mean, Hari Raya lightings in Singapore is like Christmas lightings in Christmas, how some Americans doll up and light up their entire house and decorate with snowman and reindeer?

Muslim Singaporeans do that during Hari Raya, and Happy Hari Raya big posters and signs are post up in every estate! Every shopping mall. This is for 13% of the population only.

Like that's the last thing I will ever feel offended about.

I love all races and religions to celebrate peaceful occasions, and have their fun.

We put up all these in the streets in Singapore. "Selamat" translates to "Happy" in Muslim Malay language. We even post their greeting in their mother tongue when we start putting "Happy Hari Raya" everywhere!

It's all very public on public areas everywhere and we love it! Nobody gets upset about it here at all! It actually shocks me it is a problem in the west for a place that believes in freedom.

The interesting bit is, our buddhist day is the Happy Vesak Day, but we don't really bother doing so much with that haha! Probably because Buddha is humble and basic and does not require extravagance. He seem to be all about living in poverty and basic thing and devoid of anything material. So to have all these fancy lightings and decoration to celebrate his day would be antithesis to what he wanted.

~Fast Reply~ To no one with shit for brains in particular:

The earliest Christians WERE Jews.

Gentiles did not get grafted into the Body of Christ until well AFTER the first Gentile convert, Cornelius the Roman centurion, as related in Acts of the Apostles 10:44-48 circa 36A.D.

St. Paul ministering to the Gentiles in Romans 11:19 (KJV)
Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

Romans 11:25 (KJV)
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

I do know one Jewish family that hide Easter baskets full of candy for their children...and I know more than a few atheists that exchange Christmas presents.

Me too...
I was making a logical attack on the circumstances of the holiday.

Did the jews waste jesus ? Interesting.

Pretty sure they did...remember pontius pilate and his nail drivin' five? He is suppose to have said something about the blood of an innocent man and the hand washing thingie? The jews are reportedly to have responded with "let his blood be upon us and our chilren." mathew27: 24-25. Then farily recently pope bentdick exonerated them.

Do you wish jews a happy easter? You know the day they snuffed jesus.

A Happy Passover, which is inextricably linked to Easter.

Jesus was the Passover Lamb, without spot or blemish.
No man took his life because he gave himself willingly and let himself be objectified as such.
The perfect Master-Teacher Prophet showed perfect submission.

But you already knew that, oh agent provocateur. [:)

Being an athiest I do derive a bit of pleasure pointing out the historical/hysterical aspects of religion.

I would argue that you know a Jewish family that celebrates "The Easter Bunny" which has fuck-all to do with the resurrection.

Further, I would say that you know Atheists that were probably raised in some form of Christianity who have since "fallen away" and just exchange gifts because they think it's "fun".

I strongly doubt that when they are buying or exchanging the gifts they're thinking about the gift that God gave the world.

It's about intent, really. There are times when I sing a song to worship or praise God. There are other times when I sing that same song because it's a catchy tune and it's stuck in my head. There are times when someone asks me to sing it at Karaoke.

Two of those things have nothing what-so-ever to do with spirituality or religion. I can engage in them, very easily. It's when I sing that song for the first intended purpose that I am "celebrating" that song and that moment and that connection to something higher.

Merry Christmas (and I don't give a fat rat's ass if anyone's offended by it),

Michael

As an atheist I have only a swiftly passing interest in religion, but I have noticed a few things:

Duties of a believer in Nordic gods: die in battle
Duties of a Protestant: none
Duties of a Catholic: guilt. confession and being molested as a child
Duties of a Moslem: five pillars including praying in a demeaning fashion 5x a day, plus bloody awful music
Duties of a Jew: butcher your male children
Duties of a Sikh: avoid haircuts, wear bandages
Duties of a Buddhist: hum a lot
Duties of a Hindu: lay eggs

Merry Yuletide everybody everywhere!

DaddySatyr what I am saying is i know people that are perfectly happy to celebrate holidays of religions they do not participate or believe in...And they are not offended if someone wishes them a merry day on their religious holiday... I would hope this is as it should be.

I love Christmas. But it's a single day. Two, at most counting Christmas Eve. It does not start the day after Thanksgiving and then run until New Year's.

I think it begins when the big retailers want you to start emptying your pockets and stops when they realise they can't push their luck any further.

if you want to look into the origins of all of the traditions that make up the holiday season it is very interesting and a great debate among those that follow certain beliefs.
one is the day of the 25th of dec it started as xristos mas not sure of the spelling but it was more common and popular so the church moved their celebration to its date
and the evergreen tree was a European tradition of a small table top one that would be planted in the spring as part of the renewal celebration and the yule log came from when fire was not easy to start so all fires were extinguished and the local priest would start one and then all would come and get a piece of the fire for their home fire.
the list just keeps going so no matter what you believe or practice let it be happy and joyous and filled with love
