http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-northwestern-university-alice-dreger-resigns-met-20150825-story.html

After appropriately publishing a paper, it seems that one person has the authority to change it or ban it completely. I thought Universities were there to educate not on one point of view but on many. Guess I was wrong.

Your link is only a headline no story.

A Northwestern University professor has resigned her position at the Feinberg School of Medicine after, she said, her complaints of academic censorship were ignored.

Alice Dreger, who worked part time as a clinical medical humanities and bioethics professor, initially complained in 2014 that the school dean removed a risque article from a website for the bioethics journal Atrium because of fear it would harm the school's image.

The university eventually allowed the essay, called "Head Nurses," to go back onto the website in May after Dreger said she threatened to take her complaints about school censorship public. But she objected to a newly established "oversight committee" required to review and approve articles before they appear.

"In recent weeks, I have appealed to you to acknowledge the censorship and to assure me it will not happen again," she wrote in Monday's resignation letter to Provost Daniel Linzer.

She was disappointed with the provost's response, which she quoted in the letter as stating:

"The ongoing publication of any journal depends on a number of factors that are quite distinct from academic freedom. The approval and support of the Medical School or the University for publication of a journal that bears the institution's name would depend on the publication making a significant contribution to our educational and scholarly mission."

University spokesman Alan Cubbage said Monday that he could not comment on Dreger's resignation because it is a personnel matter. "We wish her well," he said.

Linzer could not be immediately reached.

The journal Atrium stopped publication after faculty objected to the new oversight committee, which Cubbage has described as "an editorial board of faculty members and others, as is customary for academic journals."

Atrium, published near annually since 2005, had always been considered "edgy," featuring topics that explore where medicine overlaps with other disciplines, such as religion, literature and the law, Dreger said.

Dreger had served as visiting editor for an edition called "Bad Girls" that featured the "Head Nurses" essay and included articles by other scholars on disability and sexuality. "Head Nurses" was a first-person account written by Syracuse University visiting humanities professor William Peace, who described a sexual experience with a nurse after he was hospitalized in 1978 with paralysis. He wrote that the nurse had acted compassionately to help him during rehabilitation in "a lost part of medical history."

Dreger recently published a book, "Galileo's Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and the Search for Justice in Science," which she describes as focused on researchers who "get in trouble for putting forth challenging ideas about sex."

Earlier this year, Northwestern officials responded to an unrelated controversy involving academic freedom after two students filed complaints under the Title IX gender equality law because of an essay written by communications professor Laura Kipnis.

The university found no evidence of wrongdoing by Kipnis, who had criticized the university's ban on faculty-student sexual relations in an essay published in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Dreger wrote in her resignation letter: "I no longer work at a university that fearlessly defends academic freedom in the face of criticism, controversy, and calls for censorship. Now I work at a university at which my own dean thinks he has the authority to censor my work."

worked for me but here it is. sorry.

Thanks for the text. It seems the Chicago Tribune is paywalled.

Are only leftists money minded? Aren't they owned by J.P. Morgan Chase? Hardly lefties You have accused the L.A. Times of being liberal yet the history of the Chandlers has been just the opposite...While Otis Chandler was a surfer he was hardly a liberal. The new owners are a little to the right of Attila the Hun.

The implication makes for an interesting distinction after I've seen before on this forum that whatever leftists own...is all leftist but we are to believe that only rightist owners allow their empire to be both rightist and leftist. I wonder if all of that is really true ?

KenDckey -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/26/2015 3:42:03 AM)

I don't know. I started this thread to discuss first amendment censorship. There was an issue on the article content so I fixed that. Then it goes off on JP Morgan and I have no clue where that came from. So how about we get back on subject and stick to it.

she would have had to sue and really screw up her career. Always back to money and power.

KenDckey -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/28/2015 9:06:18 PM)

A good point but sometimes principle outweighs the consequences otherwise.

virtually any form of government in its ideal state in the final analysis would make people very happy.

The problem with all governments is that it is impossible to keep them from getting cancer from the combination of money and power. Schools are extensions of gubmint indoctrination centers.

bounty44 -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/29/2015 6:27:36 AM)

I can see why the woman in question is upset, but article acceptance, denial, removal, etc really is in the hands of whatever editorial board process the journal has.

she only has cause to complain if prior to the articles initial rejection, all of her peers submissions had a 100% acceptance rate.

while im here, we fall prey to this sort of thinking frequently---the first amendment speaks to government, not relationships between employers and employees, so this isn't a first amendment issue.

bounty44 -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/29/2015 7:42:20 AM)

on top of that too---being published in what is essentially someone else's journal, is a privileged opportunity, not a right.

bounty44 -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/29/2015 7:43:47 AM)

double post...sorry...

Real0ne -> RE: first amendment gone awray (8/30/2015 9:49:06 AM)

Schools and Universities are indoctrination centers.
Take the big bang for instance if you want a good laugh. Completely contrary to physics and logic and reason.

Its about time we have a phd who actually thought this through for all those who do not of cannot think for themselves and require 'authority' labeled opinions as their highest truth. I like this guy, he has made plenty of enemies as he explains the failings of so called modern physics 'assumptions' that have been accepted as facts without true foundation.

quote:

The mistake Einstein and the modern quantum mechanics do is that they ignore the source field, the aether. The field is controlling matter and therefore the meter, how long a meter is. Speed is meter times seconds. Therefore the field controls even the speed, including the speed of light. We don't see the blueshift at the fixed stars, because they and we belong to the same field of our galaxy. We all shift place in the same proportion. That's also the reason why we measure the speed of light as a constant: 300.000 km/s. That measurement is only an illusion. We don't measure the speed of light, but only our measurement device, because we look at it with our eyes using just light, what we want to measure.

You mentioned "money minded leftists" I contend that the money minded are of all political persuasions. You said the Chicago Tribune was a leftist organization yet they are owned by conservatives. You have said on many occasions that the L.A. Times is a left wing paper yet they have always been owned by conservatives. Currently Chase bank.
That is where that came from.
