His Show, now in its 2nd season will piss off some people, but it really has made an impact.
Ive mentioned him many times, and pointed out his show often.
I watched this the other night and wondered what would be the result of the segment
now theres this
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2015/08/20/irs-televangelists-john-oliver/

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — The IRS is getting pressured to begin cracking down on televangelists following a John Oliver segment on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight.”
Oliver blasted televangelists this past Sunday for what he called “seed faith,” where they tell donors they will reap the rewards by giving money to them.
“They preach something called the prosperity gospel which argues that wealth is a sign of God’s favor and donations will result in wealth coming back to you. That idea sometimes takes the form of seed faith – the notion that donations are seeds that you will one day get to harvest,” Oliver said in the segment.
He continued, “The argument is ‘sow your money into the ground, you will reap returns multiple times over,’ except as an investment you’d be better off burying your money in the actual ground because at least that way there’s a chance your dog may dig it up and give it back to you one day.”
People have donated millions to televangelists through the “prosperity gospel,” believing by giving money, God will help them.
“They keep trying to send more money, more money, more money so they can get healed,” Trinity Foundation president Ole Anthony, whose group investigates religious fraud, told CBS News.
Anthony explained to CBS News that televangelists are able to receive millions because the IRS has turned a “blind eye” to their tax-exempt churches.
“A few years ago, the IRS named Scientology a church. Since that happened, anybody can call themselves a church,” Anthony said.
CBS News reports the IRS only conducted three church audits from 2013 to 2014 after suspending them completely from 2009 to 2013.

it is totally ridiculous, isnt it? sending suckers.. er, I mean believers a piece of cloth and packets of oil, sending them back $1 of a previous donation and asking them to send that same $1 back along with another $49.. lol.. but that is what America is all about.. there are so many f'n scams here..

It is to me but its going to be seen as an "attack on chistianity" by the people who believe in this particular sect of religion.
That if the hated irs isnt treacherous enough already, they" will be changing tax laws on all churches." And persecuting god fearin people.
The furore is already picking up.

"Industrial Disease"

Warning lights are flashing down at Quality Control
Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
There's rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down
There's a meeting in the boardroom they're trying to trace the smell
There's leaking in the washroom there's a sneak in personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
'goodness me could this be Industrial Disease?

The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
They're refusing to be pacified it's him they blame the most
The watchdog's got rabies the foreman's got fleas
And everyone's concerned about Industrial Disease
There's panic on the switchboard tongues are ties in knots
Some come out in sympathy some come out in spots
Some blame the management some the employees
And everybody knows it's the Industrial Disease

The work force is disgusted downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are 'classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze'
On ITV and BBC they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless theology is worse
History boils over there's an economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean 'Industrial Disease'

Doctor Parkinson declared 'I'm not surprised to see you here
You've got smokers cough from smoking, brewer's droop from drinking beer
I don't know how you came to get the Betty Davis knees
But worst of all young man you've got Industrial Disease'
He wrote me a prescription he said 'you are depressed
But I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later - next patient please
Send in another victim of Industrial Disease'

I go down to Speaker's Corner I'm thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say they're Jesus one of them must be wrong
There's a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
'they wanna have a war to keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war to keep their factories
They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese
They wanna have a war to stop Industrial Disease
They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap your energy incarcerate your mind
They give you Rule Brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in Espana and Sunday striptease'
Meanwhile the first Jesus says 'I'd cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons'
The other one's on a hunger strike he's dying by degrees
How come Jesus gets Industrial Disease

Hey, this is capitalism at its core.

People Magazine reported that Osteen stopped taking his $200,000 salary from the church in 2005. His net worth is estimated at $40 million, and he reportedly lives in a 17,000 square-foot Houston mansion valued at $10.5 million.

USA reports: Televangelist Creflo Dollar asked his congregation to donate $300 each to raise money for a $65M luxury jet. The website was taken down after online criticism but the World Changers Church International is still accepting donations.

God, who knew 'God' was such a profit center !! Should we be surprised ?

It might end up being an attack on Christianity, if Christian churches are the only ones audited, and/or if all Christian churches are "punished" for the missteps (intentional or not) of the few.

Knock down the ones that are running afoul of the law (probably most of the big online churches, imo), but don't penalize the ones that aren't.

To be fair, Osteen has an income that is not dependent upon the church. He has earned millions as an author and public speaker.

He confounds me a little. He seems more of a motivational speaker with a religions bent than a preacher.

His 'ministry' pulls in $300,000/week per broadcast. Plus he uses his television to push his books. An old friend told me that as soon as his Parson bought a Mercedes, he quit the church.

Its people like that, that cause people to leave Christianity. It's hard to take someone serious that says to help the poor, the ill, the hungry, and the hurt; while wearing a set of cloths worth more than those living in poverty make in two years! Was it REALLY your sky deity helping? Or just dumb luck? Or dirty business/politics?

If I was God, and I truly wanted people to get to Heaven; I would fire all these pseudo-christians. Then go on a campaign of destroying the evil while helping the good. Give people reason to live and strive, helping other people along the way. The Devil's troops? They already exist. Never heard of FOX 'news'? The GOP/TP?

Growing up, the tellyvangelism pissed me off, its all there was to watch sunday after church. sheer obnoxious.
I know many churches do incredible work...and of most faiths. like Oliver said, its not about those churches, its about the ones that are making a mockery of good work for money.

Why would we be surprised. People using religion to scam others out of their money is nothing new. Now trying to turn it into a political thing and claim it's only the ones on the right who are religious and doing this is new, but that doesn't surprise me. I've found in politics that the truth isn't all that important as long as you win.

Let's follow the logic....

The Devil is all about lying to get ahead.

Fox 'News' is all about lying to push the GOP/TP's political agenda. That it has been shown on hundreds if not thousands of moments when they showed the lies, only to have others show the honest and truthful information.

Both have little in the way of ethics much less 'serving the common good' of all Americans (and mankind external to the United States of America).

That you try to act dumb to all this is amusing.

Given that the true spectrum of the Internet has nothing to do with politics and all to do with computer language; that argument of yours is fatally flawed.

This president has been more 'up front' and honest than the previous one. He's apologized when he's made mistakes. How often did George W. Bush and Dick Cheney apologize for running up the national debt? Violations of the 8th amendment to those in a Cuban 'prison'? Giving us 'No Child Left Behind'? Crashing the economy by removing regulations all in the name of 'helping businesses stay competitive'?

Or the 17 Benghazi-like attacks under his watch?

Nor apologize for....NOT....getting the guy that attacked us on 9/11.

You want to play this game? I got plenty more evidence that shows your political party is infinately more corrupted and useless than mine. Yeah, Democrats have some odd balls, rough edges, and weird moments in goverment. But that's nothing to those in yours that want to shut down the US Government, behave in a treason-like manner, or make threats of 'Doing anything (crashing the US Economy) just to make Mr. Obama a one term US President. Yes, your party is known for that....

Since The GOP/TP got control of the US Congress in 2014, what have they actually done that is of....REAL....benefit to the US Citizens? They don't seem to have much on their plate for accomplishments. Since if they did, they would be talking about it!
