While trying to dig into facts behind the rhetoric about church fires increasing after that nut job attacked a church service; I ran across one of those things that makes me go "Hmmm".

With the doctrine of separation of church and state; many areas do not require churches to meet building codes that other facilities where people congregate have to.

In your area; are churches required to have things like fire alarms and fire suppression systems? Do you think such things should be required? Should a size of congregation test apply for requiring automatic fire safety equipment.

I checked local to me; if your business can handle less that 50 customers at a time and is free standing building you are exempt from automatic systems except in food prep areas for food intended for sale. And, there were no inspection requirements for churches either by fire marshals or health department.

Most have ALREADY been ruled arson or did you miss that?

That aside these systems are prohibitively expensive and even with them in place, an arson could still destroy a building if determined enough.

Different issue that popped up when I was reading about the church fires.

One thing that gets me is the news stories about fires in churches purports them to be in the Carolinas. Actually, there were seven church fires in the month after the nut job attacked that church but in a much larger 4 state area. One was thrown out in later reports because it was a traditionally white church. Two more were tossed out because fire investigation showed the fires started from lightning from the storm fronts that have been plaguing the southeast. The rest are still being investigated when you drill down to local reporting.

What got me checking on building codes and churches was one statement by a firefighter that "If they had an alarm; we might have saved the structure. The fire burned in the steeple for hours before the rest of the structure went up."

So, I'm wondering if most churches have no more than a smoke detector in a kitchen area>
