A slew of speakers of the house have been less than Jebus-like, for sure.

As notoriously partisan as Obamas IRS and DOJ etc have been, any such indictment of someone who has an R by their name (or who has been critical of the administration, or the "liberal" agenda) is by default accompanied by the tainted smell of political hackery

It would appear that any partisan stuff in the IRS was fomented by W appointees. Yeah, well said, 'r's are indeed taints.

This just further proves once again the naivete in our founding father's belief, that the American businessman/politician would be as statesman-like as they where and the greed and corruption wouldn't rear its ugly head.

Little did they know hey !!

I welcome him getting the Justice he deserves for what he's guilty of.

I'll add that if it's a case of blackmail, I hope the other party/parties see justice too.

$3 mil appears to be the current cost of a Get Out of Jail Free card in American Monopoly.

I'm waiting for the Clintons to be indicted. And stephanopolus to be suspended. Interesting how Hastert is the main concern.

One report I heard said that the person who received the $3.5M was a "co-operating witness" which, in "Fed Speak" usually means "Immunity".

Maybe I'm naive but I would think the BlackmailER would be a "bigger fish" than the BlackmailEE.

That said, I believe the charges are withdrawing amounts of cash to keep his activities "under the radar" (Under $10,000 per withdrawal) and lying to FBI investigators.

Hastert Case Is Said to Be Tied to Decades-Old Sexual Abuse
J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, was paying a man to not say publicly that Mr. Hastert had sexually abused him decades ago, according to two people briefed on the evidence uncovered in an F.B.I. investigation into the payments.
Federal prosecutors on Thursday announced the indictment of Mr. Hastert on allegations that he made cash withdrawals designed to hide those payments and for lying to federal authorities about the purpose of the withdrawals.

Hastert was appointed during the Clinton/Gingrich sex scandals. GOP really needed someone who appeared to be above the fray. Oops. Lucky for them the story took so long to break.

If he is guilty, put him in jail just like any other criminal. If innocent, pay his costs for lawyers, etc

Those are the charges and I am not particularly comfortable with them.

I do not think that evading government surveillance should be a crime. Especially for an activity that is otherwise legal.
