‘Shocking’ revelation finds $5.3tn subsidy estimate for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments

ossil fuel companies are benefitting from global subsidies of $5.3tn (£3.4tn) a year, equivalent to $10m a minute every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF calls the revelation “shocking” and says the figure is an “extremely robust” estimate of the true cost of fossil fuels. The $5.3tn subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments.

The vast sum is largely due to polluters not paying the costs imposed on governments by the burning of coal, oil and gas. These include the harm caused to local populations by air pollution as well as to people across the globe affected by the floods, droughts and storms being driven by climate change.

Nicholas Stern, an eminent climate economist at the London School of Economics, said: “This very important analysis shatters the myth that fossil fuels are cheap by showing just how huge their real costs are. There is no justification for these enormous subsidies for fossil fuels, which distort markets and damages economies, particularly in poorer countries.”

Lord Stern said that even the IMF’s vast subsidy figure was a significant underestimate: “A more complete estimate of the costs due to climate change would show the implicit subsidies for fossil fuels are much bigger even than this report suggests.”

The IMF, one of the world’s most respected financial institutions, said that ending subsidies for fossil fuels would cut global carbon emissions by 20%. That would be a giant step towards taming global warming, an issue on which the world has made little progress to date.

Ending the subsidies would also slash the number of premature deaths from outdoor air pollution by 50% – about 1.6 million lives a year.

Shocking calculations. Here's the answer. Use corn for biofuel.

Yeah, but pyrethrins, permethrin, sumithrin, and resmethrin (1 natural, 3 synthetics) do that job nowadays.

You can kill people or mosquitos. Or both. Or one.

HunterCA -> RE: Fossil fuels subsidised by $10m a minute (5/28/2015 11:02:11 AM)

I'll tell you a good pollution tax. A population density tax. Around here, San Francisco, Oakland and the Silicon Valley paved over their environment years, and sometimes decades, ago. Yet, the people who live there are always the ones who want to tax shit. the air pollution in the middle of the state actually is blown there from the coast and we have to mitigate it here. They've not had a natural environment since before the 1906 earthquake. Yet, due to their political clout environmental mitigation adds over $100,000 to the cost of a new home here. Why should we here, pay for them?

So let's do a population density tax. Every year you pay $100 to the government for every person that lives within 500 yards of you. Of course the government will say it's going to spent this money on environmental mitigation. But they won't. Just like any other tax, within five minutes of implementing it, politicians will be looking how they can get their hands on it to buy their votes.m

I wish Canada would get with it regarding hemp( and a whole lot of other things) but with the crazy bastards we have in power now...not likely....ugh

what do you mean? hemp and growing hemp is legal in Canada (has been since 1998).. and much of the hemp products for sale in the US come from Canada..

Lucy,
http://www.hempoilcan.com/why-hemp/general-hemp-faq/

Is that not legal in Canada? Seems to claim to be.

Medically it's legal, but recreationally it isn't. That being said, it's not like people are thrown in prison for it they way they are in the US. The worst Ive heard happen is people are given a fine, not to mention we seem to have a social mentality where cops seem to not really care all that much about pot, and instead focus more on the hardcore drugs. But this is coming from a guy who's only done it a couple times and has had almost no encounters with the police on these issues, just second hand hearsay.

pot and hemp are two very different things.. if you "did hemp" all you would get is a bad headache since hemp has barely any thc.. And hemp has been legal to grow (with licensing) in Canada since 1998..

"unlike marijuana, it only contains small quantities of the psychoactive drug delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)."

"The Industrial Hemp Regulations came into effect on March 12, 1998, and cover the cultivation, processing, transportation, sale, provision, import, and export of industrial hemp."

"Hemp's agronomic and environment attributes are remarkable: it can be grown without fungicides, herbicides and pesticides, it absorbs carbon dioxide five times more efficiently than the same acreage of forest and it matures in three to four months. Hemp can be used to create building materials, textiles, clothing, inks, and paints and has potential use in other non-food products."

Canada's official hemp page

Which seems a hell of a lot more progressive than the US.

USDA's hemp page

All I know is that more people in Florida voted for medical marijuana than either of the jacktards that ran for governor.

That just means that marijuana is more important than politics! I wouldn't be surprised if that happened in damn near every state, unless a politician ran on giving out free weed... [:D]

Why don't you put that to the test DS? I'll vote for you if that's your platform! [:D]

Because I'm not a Democrat. [:D]

I'm all for full legalization of marijuana (and hemp). I gave up cigarettes many year ago, and am happy with being a non-smoker. The only things I smoke now, are turkey, pork butt (pulled pork.. yum), ribs, chicken, etc.

Do you have any good smoker recipes for salmon, trout or kokanee? [8D]

Technically, I could easily smoke salmon, trout, or kokanee. The method is the same as with the other meats, with the only difference being the length of time they are under smoke. I don't have any good sources of fresh fish as acceptable prices, so I'm not experienced smoking them. I have smoked catfish, though, and do enjoy smoked fish (and smoked cheeses, which I will never try to do myself with my smoker setup). I even tried a smoked beer (rauchbier) that was horrible, but it was in a clear bottle, so it may just have been skunky (I couldn't even chug it and couldn't get any sort of smokey goodness out of it).

For Rauchbier, you smoke the hops, prior. Not the liquid.

Perfect

I would like to try it out

Problem, I brought it home from work some time ago on a 3.5 inch floppy. I know where it is but, presently down have a floppy drive.

But....if you'll accept my memory.

I got salmon in large batches. There's a guy who has a passion for salmon fishing. Toward the beginning of the season he eats all he catches. Toward the end of the season he would sometimes stop by and drop off five to ten pounds of fillets that had been happily swimming that morning. So my batches were usually larger.

Let's see. Stuff you had to have was a bottle of white wine. I tried a couple of different favors and personally liked Saki best. But, experiment.

A cup of soy sauce. A half a bottle of Sriracha vietnamese hot sauce. A half a box of brown sugar.

Salt and pepper really don't matter because you'll never taste them with the sugar and hot sauce. But you may like salt. Then there was a small bottle of lobster sauce. For me personally, I started adding more lobster sauce and less brown sugar. But, I don't like sweet as much as some people.

Then there was both garlic and ginger. I used a good size piece of ginger but ended up leaving out the garlic and just adding more Vietnamese hot sauce, which is made from garlic anyway. Grate the ginger and toss it in. Smash up about four cloves of garlic and toss it in, unless you just add that much more hot sauce like I do now.

I usually debone the fillets and cut them into strips about 2-inches wide. I soak all of the fish in that sauce mixture in the refrigerator over night. With strips that small they'll cook fast but be finger size when they're done. It makes a good snack. Since they cook fast I make sure the hardwood is smoking real well before I throw the fish in the smoker. I usually use those cedar chips you can buy with charcoal and lighter fluid because the surface area of the chips allows for a lot of smoke at once and fish don't need much time.

That's how I do it now. I'm sure if I looked up the original recipe it would be different. But this is what's evolved here.

I swear my next project is building one into the side of a nearby hill. The problem is my project generally get done when I can snooker friends who have teenaged sons to do the heavy work to come visit.
