At least one congressman thinks so. His $174K pay will keep him is sacks and he must live in his office (or at least a bunch do), because they can't afford the DC economy. What I am courious about is just how many millionares are in DC?

HunterCA -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 7:18:50 PM)

Is say, millionaires in congress...depends on how long they've been there. This person must still be a freshman. He'll be alright in a couple of years.

Raises should be based on performance both Congress and the President (maybe even the Supreme Court) should get a pay cut.

Aylee -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 7:41:09 PM)

He could ask Harry Reid how he managed.

Or maybe get together with a couple other congress critters as roommies.

KenDckey -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 7:44:00 PM)

This guy is apparently according to his congressional site now serving his 12th term. Definately no freshman.

BamaD -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 7:59:57 PM)

FR

When I was based in MD Congress decided that do to the financial crises the military would not get a raise.
Then turned around and gave themselves a huge raise, 25% I think.
A Congressional raise now makes as much sense as it did then.

HunterCA -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 8:30:50 PM)

Ya, but didn't they do that at something like midnight Friday night so it was old news by Monday?

It was the 70's so I am not sure. I think I found out after the fact.

JVoV -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/19/2015 10:55:33 PM)

Technically, Congress has to vote against a pay raise each year, otherwise they automatically get a cost of living increase.

I think what the media should do is track Congress's approval rating. Tracking the Democrats, Republicans and token Independents as seperate groups as well. Last Congressional session had an approval rating of like 8% per Gallup. The current Congress really hasn't accomplished anything useful. The Congressmen and any whom support him have no real right to demand a pay raise. Why reward lame performance?

How about they get good border security installed, checking those roads and ports, make the VA 'state of the art', set up our debt to be paid off in 20-25 years, improve the ACA, put money forth on infrastructure, Remove the restrictions on federal student loans, and tax the rich like under the Reagan Administration. They do all that, they can have a 5% raise....

I have to disagree with some of you on the US President. With the amount of bullshit that guy has had to put up with, while accomplishing many more good things for America than the least guy in the Oval Office; deserves a raise if not a bonus.

Speculation on my part, but since the minimum wage is going up, the left is beginning to think they deserve a congressional pay raise.

That would be the auto spell checker to blame.....

It should have read 'last'. Don't ask me why it added a letter. Not like I'm playing Well of Fortune....

Since the Democrats are in the minority in both the House and Senata, does it really even matter?

Its like when the Republicans tried to defund the Affordable Care Act with fifty-six bills. Or has it gone up since?

KenDckey -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/20/2015 2:10:51 AM)

Does it matter? Yes. When government is paying out more than taking in, it matters.

I see no relationship between ACA an congressinal pay raises, other than both take money from us that we don't want to pay. My wife had a historectomy yet is required by law to pay insurance for her abortions and other contraceptives and other issues as well. I can't negotiate those things out because someone in Congress didn't allow for it under the law. This increasing insurance rates. Congress didn't do it's job there, at least in my opinion.

The history of that issue was when the GOP tried to 'starve the beast' back in the start of the millennium. They reduced taxes (part of the G. W. Bush campaign promise if you recall). They believed this would then lower the budget. Unfortunately when they went to actually lower that budget, the Democrats fiercely opposed it. The problem was clear as daylight; the GOP was trying to reduce things more from Democrat 'sacred cows' then Republican. By like 10 to 1. Would the Republicans do the same if the Democrats did this? Hellya! The result turned the surplus the Republicans and Bill Clinton had engineered back in 1995 into a deficit in 2000. That deficit grew each year (and grows even in the present year).

It comes down to whom you feel is at fault. The Republicans reduced the taxes on the rich to which most economists would place the budget at 'even' or 'surplus' status were it reconstituted. The Democrats for resisting changes that were largely against their voting base. That they couldn't come to a real compromise is really all their fault. Its our fault for electing them....

The issue is that we live in a society of 'We the People'. That each of us individual may or may not dislike something in government. Or that government pays for. Yet, someone else might take the position that its 'money well spend/used'. To which one has to weight the 'pros' and 'cons' carefully and objectively.

I could explain how the ACA operates as it relates to you, but it would take some time (and probably a few threads....). This stuff 'makes sense' once you understand it. But I can understand how its just plain gibberish to those that dont understand it. The ACA does work....mostly. There are places that could be 'operated' on to improve. But to explain those improves, would imply explaining the whole of the ACA (as it helps to explain the improvements). Which is a pain in the ass. I've done it. Takes about 30-45 minutes in person. After which most people nod and say "ok, I understand it now; I agree with this and disagree with that".

That is a very flawed statistic, people don't like other peoples representatives.
They keep re-electing their congressman overwhelmingly.
If my statement about Obama sharing the blame is wrong because the country is cough cough doing so well then congress has to get to share in the credit.

Ps they should track congresses approval IN THEIR DISTRICT (state for senators).

KenDckey -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/20/2015 10:08:56 AM)

It appears that Congress feels that former Presidents deserve a pay cut

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/05/ex-presidents-pension-house-vote-bill-clinton-118100.html?cmpid=sf

Why not congress?

mnottertail -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/20/2015 12:31:39 PM)

I think congress is a candidate for the minimum wage.

KenDckey -> RE: Does Congress Deserve A Pay Raise (5/20/2015 1:42:31 PM)

Oh no. They work hard. I'd give them a penny or two more LOL
