A San Diego man who operated a revenge porn website and then charged victims to remove nude images and personal information was sentenced Friday to 18 years in state prison, the attorney generals office said.

Kevin Bollaert, 28 years old, was convicted in February of 21 counts of identity theft and six counts of extortion in San Diego Superior Court for running a pair of websites that capitalized on the Internet as a forum for public shaming.

Jilted lovers and hackers could anonymously post nude photos of people without their consent, along with personal information about them, at a website Mr. Bollaert created called ugotposted.com. More than 10,000 images, mainly of women, were posted between December 2012 and September 2013.

People who sought to have the explicit images taken down were directed to changemyreputation.com and charged $250 to $350 to remove the racy content.

Victims included teachers, wives and professionals. The compromising photos cost people jobs, damaged relationships and led to one attempted suicide.

Mr. Bollaert earned about $900 a month in website ad revenue and collected about $30,000 from victims.

Scummy fucker deserves every second.

He just might end up as someone's bitch for the duration of his sentence.
While I do not approve of prison rape,or any rape for that matter, I will have some trouble summoning up any concern for this prick.

Lucy, sending you mail in 5 minutes;-)

No doubt. It would be a real shame if he ended up acquainted with a friend or relative of one of his victims while incarcerated.

It's just astonishing to me, sometimes, what people can do and still feel OK with themselves about it. Oh well. Good that this foul piece of work is out of circulation at last.

?
I can see the extortion charges. . . where did the identity theft come in at with these sites?

Unlike other revenge porn websites, where photos are anonymous, ugotposted.com required the poster to include full details of the subject.

These included their full name, location, age and Facebook profile link, with an option to include the phone number too.

Maybe this explains it Aylee.

No, not really. I was under the impression that identity theft was when you used someone else's identity to attain goods or services.

So was I but it seems we are both wrong. I seems just possessing the information is illegal.

Well that seems a bit . . . broad.

This case brings to mind an exchange in one of the Late Sir Terry Pratchett's books,
quote:

Going Postal
. In it the protagonist's parole officer calculates the 'number of lives lost' even though all of his crimes were non-violent. But people lost jobs, savings, what have you. Anyways, how would such a calculation work on this guy? This could be a very appropriate sentence. Or it could have some extra harshness because the guy was a dick. I will note that he is a dick that was providing a service that was wanted.

Note: Like all of Pratchett's latter books, it is a rather fun read.

Politesub53 -> RE: Revenge porn webmaster gets 18 years (4/5/2015 11:24:21 AM)

Aylee, could you call allowing people a place to post revenge porn a service ? Seems to me it is more correct to call it a crime.

Reaching back... Isn't that one of the statutes enacted originally about credit card theft? Like back in the 70s when the card companies actually mailed you a card and wanted you to activate it? Many cases of stolen junk mail credit cards. New legislation made it unlawful to just possess one of the stolen cards even if it hadn't been activated.

I remember reading something about a law like that used to prosecute the fellows that set up a bogus ATM at the L.A. County fair just to skim data. Just possessing the skimmed data had them prosecuted even though they had been caught before they could use the stolen numbers and PINs.

Prostitution (most places) is a crime, yet I would call it a service.

Loan sharks are illegal, yet it is a desired service.

Bookies are illegal, yet are a desired service provided.

People were using the revenge porn site he set up, so yes, he was providing a desired service.

The guy found a niche and exploited it. YAY for him. That is actually a pretty awesome thing to be able to do. Unfortunately, he was a dick, and so is now shut down and going to spend some time in jail.

I really think that it was the extortion that screwed him over. The identity theft angle looks more like adding insult to injury by prosecutorial discretion. Or like getting the mob on tax evasion as opposed to murder or whatever.

tweakabelle -> RE: Revenge porn webmaster gets 18 years (4/7/2015 8:02:52 AM)

Don't you have a view about the 'service' he was providing?

The creep set up a service that allowed embittered people to publicly shame and humiliate their ex-es, at great cost to many of those unfortunate women. (I haven't heard of a woman utilising his website and it seems unlikely that the website would have the damaging effect on most males that it would have on most women) The whole point appears to be him profiting from his clients using the website to deliberately hurt others - a sort of non-consensual cyber sexual humiliation, violation and assault service.

Is that the kind of thing that you feel neutral about?

Actually, his website did publish photos of males though it was mainly women.

Awww. Did I trigger you?

Do you need a safe space?

Warning: You might want to clutch your pearls and find a fainting couch because I am about to type some more trigerry shit.

Yes, I am pretty neutral about the whole thing. The guy is going to jail for longer than if he had raped and murdered someone. I see little to no reason to get all outraged and raise my blood pressure.

I personally find you to be a hypocrite over this. How many lives and careers have been destroyed by SJW types like you and your internet and Twitter campaigns? An example? Brendan Eich.

The difference with this guy is that he screwed up by using extortion. If he had just kept it at exploiting a situation. . . he would be safe. Of course it is also telling that your outrage is directed at him and myself instead of the folks that submitted pictures and information.

Revenge by one half a couple? That has been going on since couples started breaking up. It is pointless to get my panties in a twist NOW over it. It used to be a female's reputation could be ruined by being in a room alone with a male. This is progress.

I do not get worked up over loan sharks, bookies, or prostitutes. I am not going to get worked up over some guy that has been sentenced to jail.

Trying to online bully me with your faux outrage is pathetic. If the situation bothers you so much, start a "GoFundMe" campaign or something. Do something instead of whinging at me.

Oh yeah, I forgot, you only want to go after those with the wrong politics and CAUSE A MOB OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ATTACK DOGS TO RIP THEM APART AND TRY TO DESTROY THEIR CAREER.

Peddle your temper tantrum elsewhere. Would you care for some Preparation H for that industrial-strength butthurt?
