My sense is that the Europeans have had more long-term experience with terrorism, as well as more historical experience with the Muslim world. I don't know if that makes their reaction any better or worse than ours.

So far it seems that overall they are not handling it as good as we did... Now the French are arresting people for exercising their free speech.. Yes what they are saying is abhorrent but they have a right to say it.

France doesn't have our First Amendment.

I was just reading that they've arrested dozens in anti-terror sweeps in Belgium, Germany, and France. I would say that's an appropriate reaction, given the circumstances. They pinpoint the guilty ones and go after them, without intentionally targeting innocents.

Thinking further on the general topic, sometimes it seems our reactions might be also based on how people are socialized and taught to believe. While I was checking through the news this morning, I came across stories about crime sprees in FL and KY this week, with the suspects still at large and considered armed and dangerous. The police are looking for them, and I hope they catch them. But I would not expect any huge societal "reaction" to this, and certainly not worthy of attention from the President or Secretary of State. Nor does it mean that the military would consider bombing the cities in which these criminals came from, nor would anyone even think of attacking whatever religion they believe in, if any.

Sadly, examples of horrific crimes of violence have become quite commonplace in our society, yet in most cases, these are our own homegrown criminals who have been born and raised in America and have become products of their own society. But if we find criminals who were grown someplace else, in some foreign land, then it becomes a far more severe issue worthy of a stronger reaction.

I would suggest that whatever reaction is in play here, whether in France or in America after 9/11, it's not strictly due to the actual violence and murder. After all, violence and murder are all around us, yet most of the time, society's reaction is blasé. That doesn't mean that society is ignoring the problem, but there really isn't as strong a reaction as what might take place with certain kinds of violence and murder.
