Flying when they did, how would they feel if the trip caused their baby to die instead? Really, was the trip more important to them than their baby? [8|] That is what it boils down to me..

But...but...didn't you see? That her doctor gave her the "go ahead" for it?

Of course they did all of their "due diligence", including making sure that any and all issues with the pregnancy were covered by the insurance policy they bought....

doctor ok or no doctor ok, it would not be a risk I would personally have taken.. You cant tell me that the stress of the long flight and trip didn't cause or contribute greatly to the baby being born prematurely..

For normal pregnancies, airline travel is fine until 36 weeks. [8|]

and yet it wasn't in this case...

I am sorry, I must not have seen the part of the story that said the airline travel caused this.

it didn't specifically say that but it would have added to the risk.. or why would the airline need a Doctors written ok so that they could cover their arse?

nobody said the airline required that - I do not know any airline that would require that - they ask you when the baby is due and if that is not too close they transport you - no big issue

an airline main concern is to avoid that you deliver the baby during flight

pardon me - you seem to construct a reason for blaming the mother for a risk that does not exist in the way you imagine it

Sign the house and all the assets over to mom and dad... there are no debtor prisons in Canada... are there? Tell them to stick that bill you know where.

Virgin does.. even if the airline didn't require a Doctors written letter/ok it would be in the airlines fine print as highly recommended (which also covers their butt).. http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/us/en/travel-information/special-assistance/pregnancy.html

There is a risk in everything.. That would not be a risk I would take, not with a baby that I wanted to be as healthy as possible.. it was their risk to take, now look at the problems they have as a result- a premmie baby (which may have health problems later in life), a huge fight on their hands stuck between their insurance company and the hospital, possibly declaring bankruptcy, and subjecting their child to being American and required to file tax returns with the IRS every year even (if she doesn't earn anything), subject to possibly being turned away from banks due to being American, and I am sure the US govt will come up with more hoops for American non-residents to jump thru in the coming years..

so back to square one ...

and the op was just too right

taking into consideration that a premature rupture of membranes could have happened anywhere at any time and for a variety of reasons the rest of their desperate situation has to do with the place where it happened ... (and certain health insurances being just what they are)

FR

Fucking deadbeat Canadians expecting free health care here in the US. On the bright side, the kid qualifies for citizenship.

That is the confusing part. The NICU care could likely be covered by Medicaid.

Spot on. The child is a US citizen and should be afforded the rights of an American citizen including coverage by Medicaid. Hopefully the couple looks into this.

From what everyone on these boards claims, the Canadians have a much superior health system. So why would the parents who live in Canada want to tie their kid to our lousy system? And why would you hope they do? We can't cover every kid over here and you want to spend some of that on people who don't live here? How about we take care of our own kids before we start trying to help the ones who don't need it.
