MrRodgers -> I feel so much safer now. (10/24/2014 3:20:14 PM)

Didn't see any OP's on this.

Commissioner Ajit Pai — one of two Republicans on the five-member FCC — penned a Washington Post op-ed over the weekend, denouncing the National Science Foundation study of people’s communications on Twitter. He said the study is nothing more than government monitoring of people’s speech.

The government has handed out at least $1 million toward this project, titled “Truthy.” The project is rooted in a concept coined by comedian Stephen Colbert — “truthiness” — and comes from a research project based at Indiana University.

This is the straw that should break the govt's back. We have to form a public avalanche of dissention over this. Orwell would be proud. Only $1 million so far and only so far as we know but.....?

Truthy “could mitigate the diffusion of false and misleading ideas, detect hate speech and subversive propaganda, and assist in the preservation of open debate” by creating a database of political memes shared on social media, the National Science Foundation grant states.

Yeaaa...right !!

“Hmm. A government-funded initiative is going to “assist in the preservation of open debate” by monitoring social media for “subversive propaganda” and combating what it considers to be “the diffusion of false and misleading ideas”? The concept seems to have come straight out of a George Orwell novel,”

We have to email our guys and stop this now.

Or form a head out of an ass?
They will be quite ready to debate that. I mean anyone could, even the idiots.

MrRodgers -> RE: I feel so much safer now. (10/25/2014 1:32:39 AM)

So you two have fallen right in line with this and it's ok with you ?

I think, maybe, you just haven't been paying attention.

As far as the OP goes:

Truthy “could mitigate the diffusion of false and misleading ideas, detect hate speech and subversive propaganda, and assist in the preservation of open debate” by creating a database of political memes shared on social media, the National Science Foundation grant states.

First off; I reject most connotations of "hate speech". If someone is truly spewing hate (Fred Phelps), that's one thing. The sad fact is that accusing someone of "hate speech" or "homophobia" or "racism" is far too common a tactic, these days when the person employing the tactic has just run out of logical arguments to support their end of the debate.

I remember as far back as "Hill-Billy" calling any dissenting opinion, "Hate Speech". Remember Hillary's "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy"? She might be the Godmother of the Tin Foil Hat Brigade.

One of the things that helps to keep any government in check is the ability of people to openly criticize it. So, because criticism of government has already been "set up" under the umbrella of "hate speech". That's reason enough to reject this whole idea (for me).

The other issue is government being "in charge" preserving open debate. Government regulates. That is their charge. Almost by definition, government fosters open nothing; unless we are discussing government opting to do nothing about a topic. Essentially, what we're being told is that free speech will be vastly improved, once government can control it.

How's that for a true oxy-moron?

Screen captures (and pissing on shadows) still RULE! Ya feel me?

No, that was Nixon and the Silent Majority he postulated standing with him against his paranoia fear of the media. Hillary was alluding to that in her exaggeration of the right's jumping on the ditch Clinton bandwagon the moment he was elected (I saw the first impeach Clinton bumper sticker three days after the election . . . he hadn't taken office yet).

But only "subversive" propaganda, eh?

Come on, Kirata, old bean; when the government does it, it's "information" or they use their propaganda machine - what some call "the news".

I believe that anything posted on the internet becomes public property, whether they want to study it or whatever. As far as I know.

It is questionable if that bumper sticker would be protected speech if the Democrats had all the power they desire

Right out of the washington examininer, a nutsucker nazi slobbering factless propaganda site.

Nope that is pure nutsuckerism trying to eliminate free speech.

He can't dispute the facts for various reasons, so he goes full-out troll on us

This from the party that sought to create a permanent Republican majority during the Bush years.

THAT'S what sank the 2006 midterms so dramatically.

You are trying to claim that the Republicans did it first? Hardly. Republicans, though far from perfect, routinely oppose leftists' efforts to steamroll our various constitutional rights

You still can't read.

Try again. Go word by word if you need to. Trace them with your index finger, and sound them out.

Another good example of Republicans running interference for the constitution vs. desperate, power-mad leftists

Thank you, MrRogers
