I've lived in San Diego 26 years; DC's article pretty much describes why De Maio's mayoral run failed. Also probably why De Maio will not win against Scott Peters to represent my district. Not that Peters is all that great: he's part of the House freshmen class of Third Way Dems who disturbingly vote with Repubs on proWall Street bills. Peters is a 100 plus millionaire and not exactly a guy of the people. Peters reelection (he'll probably not be challenged from the left despite his DINOness} is pretty much reflection of our district's more liberal coastal and long standing, urban easy going attitude about, well, everything. DeMaio was a City Councilman representing one of the only 2 City districts that didn't vote Obama. It's a retirement hub for old, paranoid conservatives, a suburb for white flight and hq of lots of military contractors, even sports a Koch industry; it's where a big chunk of Romney kids' tax free hundred million landed. Our two main newspapers have been rendered useless by rightwing zealot/ self enricher Doug Manchester; our tv stations also display a consistent rightward bent. Pretty much the only left media are the free weeklies. So Demaio had the money and the media behind him before, just not the voters. SD is now a majority Dem City. Our City Council is 6-3 Dem, our County Supervisors also Dem majority. The new Mayor is a Repub but ran mostly as a likeable surfer dude and as far away from Repub talking points and id as he could. ( Low turnout... nobody cared that much bkz he can be vetoed every time by the Dem City Council.) In the next regular election probably Todd Gloria, (who was had to serve as mayor pro temp as head of the City Council ,so couldn't run for mayor) who is both gay and a Democrat, will run and win. If not Gloria, Christine Kehoe (also a gay SD rep, now 1st woman/gay Leader of the Ca State Senate) or Marti Emerald will run & win. DeMaio lost for mayor in 2012 because he opposed gay marriage, because he is a Koch/Norquist disciple & carpetbagger and, well, frankly because his googleyed meanness & charmlessness goes over about as well in SD as his pal's Paul Ryan would. No amount of rightwing propaganda or money could make the majority of voters in SD like or trust him. DeMaio's demeanor is petty, self-rightgeous,condescending. Voting for DeMaio as a gay person would be like voting for Allen West as a minority or Karen Handel as a woman. No one in the LGBT movement in mainstream San Diego is interested in what Bush's mouthpiece Dana Perino or even Ken Mehlman think of our politics. Because of media bias, it's been very, very difficult for Dems to win in SD. Yet our City and County have all majority Democratic representation. Our Congressional Democratic preference of 3:2 most likely will hold, because this district is now a majority Democratic district.
