At the California Republican Party’s convention earlier this month, chairman Jim Brulte announced 2014 would be the year of “pushing the party outside of its comfort zone,” and introduced four candidates vying to take on incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown in November.

One of those candidates may be way outside that comfort zone -- a businessman, who also is a registered sex offender who served a decade in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

Glenn Champ, who is listed as an “engineer and businessman” on the state election website, has a lengthy rap sheet. He was nabbed for picking up an underage prostitute in 1993, which resulted in him pleading guilty to two counts of assault with intent to commit rape and becoming a registered sex offender.

In 1998, Champ also pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. An Associated Press article at the time said authorities accused Champ of running over a competitor in the garbage collection business with his truck after an argument, killing him. Champ told FoxNews.com the incident was a "tragic accident."

He received 12 years in prison and says he served 10 and three-quarters before he was released in 2009.

Champ is now running against several established politicians and government officials for the GOP nomination, including Laguna Hills Mayor Andrew Blount, ex-Treasury official Neel Kashkari and state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly. Despite his past, he stood alongside them and delivered a 10-minute speech at the GOP convention.

Champ, though, says he's a changed man. He told FoxNews.com that during his time in prison both his faith in God and his love of politics grew. He said he knows how to effectively deal with lawmakers he claims are violating the political system and the Constitution, because of his time in jail.

“My past is good, it's bad and it’s ugly,” Champ said. “I don’t have any problems with people scrutinizing it.” But, he added, “You should also look past it and see what I’ve learned.”

Champ said he is running on a campaign that promotes “American Christian values,” supporting tax breaks for businesses and gun rights and opposing same-sex marriage and abortion “99 percent of the time.” Champ said these issues are what California voters should be focusing on.

“They shouldn’t dwell on my past. They should be looking at the future of California and what I can do,” he said.

Champ also addressed his stance on issues that hit close to home -- namely, California's treatment of registered sex offenders. He said he is fine with requirements that say he and others must register every year with law enforcement, but opposes the online sex offender registry enacted in 2004 as part of Megan's Law. He said the Megan's Law registry is "counterproductive to society," as it creates a fear in the public and prevents registered sex offenders from becoming productive citizens.

As a registered sex offender, Champ is required to register with local law enforcement annually but says he personally has no restrictions on travel. He also is not allowed to live within 2,000 feet of a school or park.

A spokesman for the California Republican Party told FoxNews.com that they are aware of Champ’s past, but the party is required to remain neutral during the primary and opened the speaking opportunity to all candidates who have filed with the state. He said it will be up to the voters whether Champ is worthy of being their nominee.

However, the immediate former chairman of the state Republican Party Tom Del Beccaro did not mince words. He said while an open primary is good overall, it does allow candidates like Champ to slip through the cracks.

"That doesn’t make them a serious candidate and doesn’t mean they represent the constituency or the view of the Republican Party," he told FoxNews.com.

His competitors also raised eyebrows at Champ’s campaign.

Blount told FoxNews.com Champ’s candidacy is indicative of the problems with the state GOP; namely that officials do not pay enough attention to statewide races. He said he found out Champ was a sex offender the first time he searched his name in Google, but worries voters won’t do the same.

“There will be people who will vote for him without any idea what he stands for,” he said.

Donnelly, for his part, dismissed the notion that Champ is a serious contender.

“The only sex offenders I'm worried about are the one's (sic) that Jerry Brown has let out of prison with his early release program,” he said in a statement to FoxNews.com.

Any GOP challenger to Brown has an uphill climb. The Democratic governor enjoys an approval rating of 58 percent, according to a December poll, and has about $17 million banked for his campaign, dwarfing the fundraising of any GOP contender. Champ has not yet filed a campaign finance report with the state.

Served his time.......is he a liability for the gop???

Amazing this wasnt in the other thread about bad democrats....smirkles

If the Dems are allowed to run criminal felons, why can't the GOP do the same?

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 1:18:58 PM)

Thats a laugh.

Alcee Hastings makes that a lie. A lie that has continued for more than 30 years at this point.
You know. Indicted. Convicted. Removed from office. Returned to office?

How about Marrion DC mayor.

There are dozens of examples of democratic political machines returning convicted democrats to office.

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 1:55:07 PM)

Meh.....you`re lying......

"Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, who was flanked by 14 other Democratic senators at a news conference in his Capitol office, called on Yee to resign from the Senate or face suspension".

Politics be damned. What's wrong with acting on the idea that the man has done his time and is rebuilding his life within the strictures of the law. Why not let voters decide who they want as a representative while we're at it?

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 2:16:11 PM)

I`m ok with that......that (r) gov. who was claiming to be hiking the AT while fucking his mistress while stealing state funds...... are the just reward for the dolts who re-elected him......

And obviously since all of a sudden, this stuff is of such great concern to republicans......they won`t mind it being mentioned.....[:D]

Feline, I dont disagree with you.....getting your life back is not easy if you dont have money, friends or clout somwhere.
This was yes a post to ""show"" the glaring hypocrisy of another thread.

Politicians are a group all on their own when it comes to being bad for society.

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 2:57:58 PM)

With your permission lucy,I`d like to suggest some other comparisons to distinguish between parties......

Like draft dodging.......

Perhaps if President Obama suggested we sell our port security to the PsOS that laundered bin-laden`s money(Dubai) like shrub did....maybe they`d have more respect for him?

We could do this all day......we have from flubbing 9/11 to gonzalez to watching 3300 Americans drowning while doing a fly-over of New Orleans..... to go over.....[:D]

Current geopee leaders sarah palin left office in disgrace to avoid charges and Christie just changed his story AGAIN......saying today he remembers being told about the closures.....Stick a fork in that crook.....

I think you need to look up the definition of hypocrisy, not once did I say that Dems were the only guilty people. I said, truthfully that the Dems were having a tough week... I never mentioned any Repubs, therefore there the only hypocrisy here is yours.

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 3:54:03 PM)

"truthfully that the Dems were having a tough week"

meh...not feel`n it....if this was a long drive I`d be "are we there yet"...[;)]...A couple state pols is like whatever....

No really. During a few moment at the end of BJ-gate,I was a little anxious.Maybe twice.

But truthfully, ever since the senate killed the impeachment.....I haven`t had very much of the "uh-oh" moments.....

The uh-oh moments came so fast and furiously during shrub admin,that the gay-hooker-posing-as-a-reporter-in-the-WH-asking-softball-questions-provided-by the-WH-scandal ,was BAU and no biggy, by comparison to a hundred dead GIs every week......[8|]

Though boring and not sexy.....I think America appreciates not having a scandal-a-minute and an adult in the WH.

I promise to let ya`ll know if I have a "uh-oh" moment over President Obama....but until then,we`ll enjoy both correcting your revisionist history and the embarrassment of you and Sanity posting fake stories and getting caught....You guys handle it with such grace and poise......an example for us all.....[;)]

Now the only con capable and popular enough to beat one of the most admired and popular woman in America,Hilary!........just admitted he`s a lying crook.....so I`m having a great week if you don`t mind and I don`t mind you pretending the Christie`s ball crushing isn`t happening.......it`s as entertaining as the ball crushing.....[:D]

I think that was focused on people who have actually been elected...

With the California State Senate Democrats starting an indictment of the month club, this report is even lamer than hyperinflating the New York State Assemblyman getting a speeding ticket, and a citation for pot, when former US Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was sentenced to 30 years in prison on his corruption in office case.

Some guy says he is going to run, and he gets a report in the news because there is an ugly/wacky aspect to his candidacy. So what? Any idea how many absolute freaks of all political stripes try a campaign for that office every 4 years? You do realize my state has a population bigger than that of your whole country, right? Plenty of nuts in the mix.

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 9:20:26 PM)

So what?

Great answer......[sm=binky.gif]

Lucylastic -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 9:52:15 PM)

Someone changed the goalposts and didnt tell me again??
Colour me shocked.
Only elected pols are allowed now?
Or only elected dems???
Yanno just so i can follow the way the rightie mindset "works".......or doesnt
Id be happy if the fbi,rcmp,scotland yard investigated every damn politician up the wazoo, for corruption, bribery, kickbacks,etc. get the fuckers out of government. It wont ever happen.there are toooo many of them.

TheHeretic -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 10:40:46 PM)

It's got nothing to do with "allowed," Lucy, just the pathetic scale of your offering. That other thread that has set your BFF into such a tizzy was dealing with elected officials, holding office, and charged with crimes committed in that office.

I'm in favor of severe penalty enhancements for any and all corrupt politicians, but at the moment (and I bet it isn't getting much play in the liitle sources you like) we can't even get the ones under criminal indictment out of their seats in the state senate.

Yee was working with organized crime to get assault rifles smuggled into California to arm drug dealers. He is a sitting State Senator, and was running for Secretary of State (he's dropped that, as of today). Why would I spare a thought for this fuckwit? We have an open primary system now. When it comes time to vote on that office in another couple of years, I'll be voting FOR someone, not worrying about the kook du jour.

Anyway, if you want to know all about the inside baseball of California politics, I'll be happy to sketch out a primer for you, as time permits.

For now, have a nice night. [:)]

Owner59 -> RE: goose the gander (3/27/2014 10:48:42 PM)

The difference though buddy(between parties) is we won`t be seeing democrats defending or making excuses for him....
