Not enough of them live in Ky, I can tell you that. [:D]

None of them are in Iowa either.

I agree with Level. There are probably far too many people to count that are into kink but refuse to acknowledge its presence.

I kind of wonder why the participation level decreases  18% between the "middle-age"  ranges. That's quite a bit (in my opinin). Maybe they are 'resting up' or 'recovering' from beatings or (doing the baeating) or something...hopefully, they are not "going vanilla" . Not that vanilla is wrong, of course, but - where did they go?

Remember, this poll was taken all at once, essentially.  So the people polled were different ages.  The 30-44 year olds were born in the mid 50's to 70's, so they were 18 in the early 70's to 80's, whereas the 45-64s were 18 in the 50's to 70's, a very different time culturally.  I would think if this study is repeated in a few years, that 49% demographic would have moved a few years older.

Just a thought.

If a poll or survey is done correctly [which is rarely known] the margin of error
is around + or - 3%. The smaller the sample the higher the margin of error.

Most political polls are based on 1000-1500 respondents.

It is also true that how you phrase a question can skew the results one way or
another.

You are one smart puppy dog, benji. Thank you! Yes, I amazed when I think about the Kinsey studies. I saw the movie "Kinsey" (anyone else see it)? What a brave, trail-blazer kind of guy. At the time (and even now) discussing some of what he was studying was considered so "taboo" I am sometimes amazed he had the courage to continue. He had to really hunt for the people to answer his questions - and even then I am sure some might not have answered completely honestly.

3% sounds about right (to me) as far as a margin of error (that can depend on how the study is constructed, too). "Open-ended" questions can really screw it up.

does anybody have any idea how many people in the world are into the bdsm lifestyle?  has it ever been estimated?

A 2001 British survey (cited on www.netdoctor.co.uk) found 18 per cent of women and 14 per cent of men describing themselves as 'into bondage', and 16 per cent of women and 13 per cent of men describing themselves as being 'into bedroom spanking'.

Hope this helps.

My guess... first of all the vast majority wouldn't go anywhere near a BDSM web site or club. Secondly I think it's inherent for a proportion of the population just like we think about 10% of people are born gay in the UK. What percentage do I think it is... if you mean people like me always been and can't be anything else submissive or dominant, rather than simply enjoying a bit of kinky sex now and then and of course there are lots of kinds of people but may be 1%??? Complete guess. Might be less.

you must be an analyst  lol... great numbers, now if we can just find where these people live we will all be much happier!

Padriag -> RE: number of people into bdsm? (7/8/2006 4:56:09 PM)

Something else to bear in mind, the survey I posted was conducted in 1998-1999.  Its 2006 now so that's 7 years of potential change.  I would imagine if the same survey were done now there would be some differences.  For example I suspect there would be a higher percentage in the 18-24 category.

But regardless, such surveys do at least give us some idea of how many are out there and the demographics involved.

Three things that stood out to me were...
That the majority group were heterosexual, I think if the same study had been done in the 50's or 60's the majority would have been homosexual (based on what I have read by people who go back that far in the lifestyle), so that's an interesting change.

Second, that the majority were over 30, which I think helps explain why those in their early twenties and younger sometimes complain that they feel the "community" is hostile towards them.

Third, that most of us are full time employees or self employed and make over $25,000 per year.  Seems most of us are pretty productive people.
