I am just wondering how soldiers, tanks and planes are useful against nuclear weapons.

After an hour on the phone with Putin, Merkel said he was of his rocker. But nukes ? I don't think he's that crazy.

Are the looney neocon element in here still insisting that Putin and his tiny cock have a better idea of what the American President's role should be than the kenyan does since the invasion of the Ukraine?

I only remember on poster saying anything like this but now he has morphed into a group? In a couple of months you will be swearing that everyone on the right has said it at one time or another. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by someone who still hasn't figured out that calling the POTUS "the kenyan" makes you look just as ignorant as the ones who coined the phrase 6 years ago.

And here I was, thinking this thread was going to be where all the Obamabots apologized to Sarah Palin.

Naw, they only like to talk about her when it can make her (and by extension all cons) look bad. Now if pressed they might mention the broken clock theory but other than that....total silence.

She does that all on her own.

No hun, she doesn't. She can go out and do all the stupid shit possible but she can't make people talk about her. If she is living rent free in some guys head it's because they put her there. They do that all on their own.

Considering he is a biological construct merging the alien cat people with humans and was born in a space craft in orbit, I agree.

After being called on for using the term neo con, I have done some research, and to be honest, nobody can agree on the meaning. Considering neo is a term for New, I would think it was new conservative, but looking at US history, that would mean an conservative who has adopted some progressive ideas, so it is actually a moderate.

However, since it is being used as an insult, it would mean conservatives who have gone to the extreme right, which I rarely see on these boards. I do see a broad spectrum of conservatives on the boards, but as far as the media goes, it seems the "weird and far out" conservatives make the headlines, moderate conservatives dont, and the conservatives that would prefer the weird ones to shut up and too embarrassed to comment, or more probably, having that "words fail me" problem.

Of course the same is true for liberals, and in a whole new category, we have Obama. The liberal who makes great promises but does not have the spine or testicular fortitude to stand up for what he says he believes in.

If we ever had a candidate from either party run on sane ideas, and not pandering to the extreme of either side, this country would shit collective bricks.

As far as Putin not being crazy enough to start throwing nukes around, considering he was crazy enough to send troops into the Crimea and try to believe that these are just armed Ukrainians (since when did armed protestors have access to heavy russian helicopter gunships and troop transports) I aint so sure any more.

The US spends over $600 billion on the military - Russia spends less than $100 billion. Russia don't have a missile defense shield - so to keep any kind of deterrent, they obviously need to have something which will get past a US defense shield. Get real ...

Which would be true if the cold war wasn't "over."

I mean, you don't design a weapon system to beat the defenses of a friendly nation, do you?

No you design a weapon system to defeat the defenses of a potential if not actual enemy.

Lets face it, most of their nuclear powered navy is pretty much rusting away in the area around Murmansk. You can actually see the hulks on Google earth. The Russian economy is in worse shape than ours, and they spend money developing a missile to get passed US ABM systems.

Considering that the Minuteman III ICBM in the American arsenal is just a continuation of a missile design developed in the 60's, it kind of makes you wonder.

As I said, if we are friends, that really isnt necessary.

FYI, the US missile defense system is not foolproof, not even close. In tests it misses about 50% of the time, and is considered to not work. But hey, 50% success is good right? Unless it is heart surgery or stopping incoming nukes.

If you were friends, you wouldn't need to spend $600 billion on war or have a nuclear defense shield. No one else does. So don't be surprised when others feel they need to have a very small insurance policy.

Why worry about Russia and the Ukraine. First off the first russian ever was the prince of kiev. So what's the problem? Second I would worry more about the asian arms race then the russian. Now that would be an interesting thread. Russia has only been an enemy for about 70 to 80 years. Before after and inbetween they were allies.

China is a uniform culture and people and with over a billion of them and the techgap closing they will be the next big player.

Dont get drawn into the daily motion of newsreels. Look behind the curtain. There's the real show.

And PS today's biggest gun is in the bank not the army.

The Russian weapons industry needed an infusion of cash and a weapons race has proven lucrative in the past. Might even have had assistance from U.S. contractors that have had increasing languishing budgets since the Berlin Wall fell.

Now, the only part of Russia I want to invade is a certain club in Vladivostok that has very friendly waitresses.

The way neocon is used confuses me also. It might have fit the target at one point but from what I have seen is about as useful now as any of the other cutesy little nicknames people like to throw around. I agree with the broad spectrum on both sides and I tend to skim over the extremes.

As for Obama, I am not sure he doesn't have the spine to stand up for what he says, I think he is in a job where his actions could have really bad consequences and he doesn't want to screw up in front of the whole world. I also think his party is scared of the upcoming elections and are pushing him from all sides.

Hopefully Putin isn't that crazy but I wouldn't put anything past him.

My understanding was that a neo-conservative is a fiscal conservative - someone who supports the basic economic philosophy of conservatism but generally rejects the traditional social positions held by paleo-conservatives.

That's the opposite of what the term's been used to describe since the turn of the millennium.
