ORIGINAL: Kirata Interesting. This kind of unrest in a society is usually a sign that its leadership is failing. Of course, now that you mention it... The leadership is doing just fine. Now if we just removed those useless Republicans and Tea Party members from Congress, this nation could get things accomplished in a major way. But I'll meet you half way on your viewpoint; the Republican/Tea Party leadership really sucks. Maybe they should hire people that are more 'sensible' and less 'lunatic'.... Are you suggesting a one party political system? Whether we want to admit it or not, the GOP has pulled a few good things as has the Democrats. Unfortunately, moderates are rarely elected regardless of party. Right now, the Republican/Tea Party is doing the worst possible job to America's form of government. Democrats, unfortunately are not to fair behind. People argue that both parties are really one and the same. So here is my take.... I feel the best way for us to have a good government is to have some good old fashion competition. When its between just two individuals is it really a contest? When all those individuals lined up for the Republican nomination in 2012; was that the BEST Americans of the Republican Party could muster to br President? I imagine conservatives dislike the Democrat's nominee. But its the cost to run for that office that blows me away. Even to run for a senator or representative is some serious resources. Yet, most Americans have virtually no chance of ever seeing any of those offices. How many people in Congress are registered nurses? Firemen? US Soldiers? Network Administrators? Verses being a lawyer? Should we not be surprised at the stale mate of events in Congress? Gerrymandering I think most of us, if not all if us, agree, has not much more damage than good. But if that is to be outlawed, a system would have to be put in place by which populations are determined fairly without bias towards one political outlook or another. This would take an amendment, since its amending the current Constitution. itself. My thinking is a grid format. How the specifics are figured out, I just do not have a good amount of detail on. Second this is to limit political donations. While the argument is made that 'money talks' and therefore should be as free as possible under the 1st amendment. I do believe wisdom should over-rule the concept in that we have seen in recent history. That money influences a tiny group of Americans with more power than the masses; that some Americans are more citizen then most other citizens (to take a nod towards Animal Farm...). Perhaps each citizens can only spend up to $12,500 in a four year period? For most Americans, that's a huge some of money. For those in the top 0.5% of wealthy Americans that not even a drop in the 500 gallon barrel! Should not 'We the People' decide on things, and not a tiny nobility? Money is both a source of free speech, but it also has the power to corrupt things utterly. There are more than enough examples of this throughout the world! When we vote, are we voting for the individual or their party? That candidates must obey the party or else really! There are Democrats that support the idea of individual firearm ownership just as there are Republicans in favor of decent regulations. But these people are never going to be heard. An get rid of the Electoral College. Its a popularity contest plan and simple. There is no reason for the Republican leaning folks in Massachusetts to go to the polls, when election after election, the commonwealth sides with Democrats. Or of Democrats in Texas, since it seems to go to Republicans. What I'm trying to get across here, is that we can not fix the problems in this country until we fix the election process itself. That would be the logical start, right? I suspect the Republicans, Tea Party and even the Democrats would fight any and all changes, since it would reduce their powerbase. But we Americans will end up doing what we do every four years: Bitch high and wide at the election process and allow the problems to persist. Rather then get off our collective butts and do something useful, we'll just obey the nobility class in the country....
