At least that is what seems to be the stance on these boards, however....

Davis Supports Proposed ‘Open Carry’ Law

AUSTIN (AP) - The Wild West tradition of openly carrying your six-shooter on the street has long been banned by many cities in Texas. But the state’s next governor could change that.

Rising Democratic star and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has joined her top Republican rival in supporting a proposed “open carry” law. It would allow people with concealed handgun licenses to wear a pistol on their hip, in full view, while in public.

Davis has said she supports expanding gun rights in Texas. But in a statement to The Associated Press, she said that includes open-carry — a position that puts her at odds with her own party but could keep her from alienating gun rights advocates in a deeply conservative a state where the Second Amendment is sacrosanct.

Alright people, that pretty much kills the argument as a right vs left argument.

I think tazzy did a pretty good job of that all by herself.

I'm in favor of open-carry being legal. I wouldn't open-carry, though. Better they not know if I'm armed. A HS friend of mine is a LEO in Cleveland, and his rationale is that if something is going to happen, the criminals are going to eliminate the greatest risks first. If they know you have a gun, you'll be at or near the top of the list.

I believe Vermont, Alaska, and most of Maine are open carry states.
And I know New Hampshire is!

Delaware is open-carry as well. I don't know what the exact details of our law are but you don't need a concealed carry permit in order to open carry. An ex-bf wanted to get a concealed carry permit but it was going to cost him $500....and then he still could be denied. Then he found out that he could open- carry without a license and that's what he did. Personally.... It bothered me more to be with him when he was carrying the gun than when he wasn't.

Good lord... sad but so at times I am beginning to believe it is time to let Texas secede from the Union of the sane.

I cannot imagine living in a State with people who elect politicians that are afraid of their shadows and must carry guns to protect themselves from themselves. If you listen to them the sky is falling every day on their church and children and the world will end without GUNS.

Yes I wouldn't go for open carry for those very tactical reasons.

Butch, it is not so much that people are afraid of their shadow, but more of a way to bring a new look at old laws.

Let me explain.

There is a law still on the books (god knows why) that if you are traveling more than a days ride away from home, you are required to carry a pistol and a rifle or carbine and at least 50 rounds of ammo for each.

The law originated in the days of the Comanche raiders and the Lipan Apache of far west Texas.

Now in modern times, many towns in Texas have ordinances about open carry inside the city limits, and their are laws on the books that make it illegal to transport loaded guns by vehicle, ammo has to be in a locked container.

Both of which I tend to agree with up to a point.

But I have friends that work on cattle ranches, which contrary to belief is not one contiguous piece of property but could be spread over the county or counties and a loaded rifle is a good thing to have to deal with coyotes and giant armadillos that wreck beer trucks, not to mention chucabras.

That would be unsportsmanlike when dealing with the giant armadillos. People even frown on baiting traps with Lone Star beer.

I'm down with that, unless of course you're okay with your kids being seduced or your wife raped,,, no matter the perp. Libs can be criminals too.

Yeah I carry for that reason. If I have an insane moment and decide to shoot myself then I can pull my gun and shoot myself to stop me from shooting myself.

There is not a bounty on heads or pelts of liberals in Texas, nor are they shot on sight.

However, the conservatives in Austin do have laws making abortions hard to get, gay marriage impossible, among other things. But you have to remember, Texas is part of the southern bible belt.

We have dry counties kept that way by Baptists and church of christers so they can sneak over to the next county and buy their booze without the neighbors seeing them.

Cities and Towns have bible thumpers on councils that keep strip clubs out of their cities, although when pictures surface of these council members going to strip joints outside of said town, they claim that they were 'preaching to sinners."

Did you know that preaching to sinners requires massive ATM withdrawals within those establishments?

Back to the gun thing.

I maintain a concealed carry permit, although I am not always carrying a gun. Since it is not illegal to shoot feral hogs anytime of the year, it would be nice to be able to shoot a hog that is running along side the road, without having to load a weapon before I do it.

However, for open carry, I think I would prefer a Howdah pistol.
