I am just wondering if any of you have ever had AFLAC insurance and what your opinion of it is? You may possibly know someone who has had it too. It is being offered to me thru my employer. On the surface I have some doubts as to whether or not it is worth having (it is optional additional LTD insurance).

Good or bad...let me know.
Thanks

I was an AFLAC agent for a year... if you go to the doctors or seem to get injuries then it is good as it is a reimbursement insurance.. but if you are the type to only go a couple of times a year it isn't worth it.

Have you gone online and priced LTD insurance? I'd do that before I make any decision.

I work in human resources benefits management. Like any other kind of insurance, it's a bit of a gamble. You might sign up for it and then never need it....and feel that you have wasted the money on it. You may decide to forfeit it....and then later have something happen where it would have been a great help.

There are 3 major things to take into consideration....

1. What is your current age and health situation? Do you think you may be at risk for a long term illness or injury? Does your job involve anything physically risky or do you participate in any sports or other activities which might put you at a higher risk for a serious injury?

2. What is your current income situation? Can you spare the cost out of your current pay or do you already live paycheck to paycheck? Do you rely on JUST your income or do you have a working partner to help cushion the cost of the insurance?

3. Do you have any dependents that would be acutely affected if you were out of work for an extended period?

Meaning....if you're 20-something, healthy, don't get into a lot of physically risky activities, and have no dependents....that's one thing. But if you are 50-something, have the wife, kids, house and a heart condition.....then you need to look at it differently.

I don't know what to tell specifically about AFLAC....those things you need research regarding your employer's particular policy and whatever restrictions it might have.

Good luck

I do not have Aflac but I do have LTD. For me it is a simple risk decision. If something were to happen to me how would I pay the bills? Car wreck, stroke, heart attack, cancer, or anything else I never expect to happen but could. I want the security of knowing if that something does happen I will have income and I will not loose my house or my retirement savings.

Honestly...how much is the premium? Both of my last two employers offered LTD. I work in "corporate" America so we are not talking injury prone positions. The LTD cost about $1-$2/pay (apx $100/yr). That is a small amount for the piece of mind of knowing that, if you need to be off work for extended bed rest during pregnancy, have an elective surgery that needs you to be "off your feet" for a few months or, God forbid, have a heart attack & need to recuperate...you will get paid. If you have "rollover" sick, it might not be needed (my entire 1st pregnancy I was able to be off 3 months because of this)..maybe it is not worth it but FEW people have the luxury of going unpaid for several months (remember...you will NOT get unemployment or any type of SSI benefits)

Unless it is cost-prohibitive, I would sign up and risk the premium

The only thing about LTD insurance is that, at every company I've ever worked for, it's only 50% of your salary. I believe the AFLAC plan as back-up really helps make up some or all of the difference, depending on your plan. A friend's husband was badly injured on the job and AFLAC started sending money right away and helped keep them afloat until the worker's comp kicked in. She said it was a real lifesaver. I have heard good things about it, I've seen the benefits on paper and it does sound good. I personally have never heard anything bad about it.
