Something I just remembered:

In college I took a screenwriting class. One of the movies we watched was 'Casablanca.' The professor, who had been teaching this class for years and obviously had watched this movie many, many times, kept pausing it to say, "I wish I could write dialogue like that."

Movies from the era you are talking about didn't have massive special effects budget so they relied upon dialogue to separate themselves from the competition. 'It Happened One Night' (1934) is another classic example. You will recognize every scene in the movie because it has been copied _that_ much.

The roles for women were so much better then, too. Compare 3 Letters to just about any modern film with women main characters.

A lot to be said for the old movies, very few of them could top in my opinion "The Maltese Falcon"...(though Bogart's earlier film, "The Petrified Forest" comes close)....but the Falcon has it, especially the closing scene's dialog (thank you, Dashiell Hammet!) "You killed Miles, and you are going up the river for it. Maybe they'll spare your pretty little neck from the rope, and maybe they'll let you out in 20 years, and maybe I'll still love You".

And for sheer Mayhem, no one will ever beat the Marx Brothers, anytime someone wants to take college or college football seriously, I point them to the Movie "Horsefeathers"....I have also pulled a Marx brothers special in interviews, asking someone what's green, has three pairs of pants and lives in Philadelphia, seeing if someone has the right response "That's a good one, boss, I give you three guesses". King Kong given what they had to work with was amazing, its special effects guy was the father of Douglas Trumbull, who became one of the biggies in FX in the 60's and 70's...another favorite of mine was the only movie Damon Runyon (the writer of the stories they based Guys and Dolls on) ever was involved in "A slight case of Murder", with Edward G. Robinson..

In the later , 1940's era, I loved Noir cinema. I am only saddened that no one managed to capture Raymond Chandler the way John Huston captured Hammet in the Maltese Falcon, the various attempts at it didn't work...

That however, is not an old timey movie. It was a deliberate attempt to recreate it. I love 'Yound Franstein' (that's FRANKENSHTEEN!) It's one of the funniest movies ever. It is not what the original post was about.

That's why I separated it and simply called it my fave black & white, not old. Sadly,
I'm older than that movie....

I'm not really a big Bogart fan but I have to say he was in some of the best movies ever made
