An arrested teenager shot himself in the head while his hands were handcuffed behind his back, police have claimed.

Seventeen-year-old Jesus Huerta died after allegedly firing the shot in the back on a police car following his arrest for trespassing in Durham, North Carolina.

Police say that despite being frisked, officers did not spot that he was carrying a handgun, and a 911 operator did not tell them that he had previously tried to kill himself, even though the teen's family had passed on this information.

(Reuters) - A teenage suspect who died in North Carolina while he was handcuffed in the back of a police car shot himself in the head with a gun he hid from an officer, according to a police report released on Friday.

Jesus Huerta died on November 19 after he was arrested on an outstanding warrant for trespassing. His family had called authorities and reported that he ran away from home and requested police search for him.

Huerta's case triggered several protests in recent months over police conduct in Durham. The release of the report followed repeated calls from Huerta's family for more details about the circumstances of his death.

First, how do you miss a handgun frisking a suspect?
Answer: You dont, unless you do a half assed job of it.

But I am trying to figure out, if he was cuffed, how in the hell did he manage to shoot himself in the head?

"The officer said he found Huerta slumped over in the backseat and a semi-automatic .45-caliber pistol on the floor, the report said. Huerta was pronounced dead at the scene."

How big is a .45 semi automatic pistol?

45/100 of an inch (11.43 mm) in diameter.  Think about our US Army .45 ACPs (you must have seen them in movies) it is damn near like a ring gauge if you smoke Churchills or Rothchilds.

Its a pretty good pumkin slinger.

I can see how he could shoot himself if he had a gun in his hand but I am also having trouble understanding how they missed the gun in the first place. If the story is true as reported, I am guessing the officers will spend a little more time frisking in the future.

Thanks. Still too big to hide from a proper search, then.

So long as they're not booted out of the force or kept on desk duty till they retire. I mean, Jesus could have blown their heads off, or those of cops back at the station . . . . This was a bit of a balls up, let's face it.

Think about it, your hands are handcuffed behind your back, how the fuck do you manipulate the gun to shoot yourself in the head?

The same thing happened in Indianapolis in 1987. After many demonstrations and re-investigations, suicide remained the official cause of death.

Could it be possible that they cuffed him in front of his body? He was a "runaway" and a trespasser. They may not have thought he posed a dangerous risk.

Maybe he told them how "happy" he was to see them, so they erred in identifying the gun?

Or instead of the Durham NC police, maybe he was actually arrested by the Keystone Kops (showing my age here).

The officers statement is that he had his hands cuffed behind his back.

this is the smallest 45 I could find we make this side of the pond.

http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/springfield-armory-xd-s-45acp-micro-pistol-new-gun-review/

still a bit larger than a deck of cards, and for most people (with the possible exception of myself, too big to tuck behind a dick to hide it.)  And the shorter the barrel, the more wrist twist needed for getting it in the vicinity of your head from behind your back handcuffed, even if you are houdini.

If they didn't think he was a "dangerous" risk ? Why cuff him at all ?
There's really no point of cuffing someone lest you do it from behind !
Not in their line of work anyway.

More importantly-HTF does someone get in the back of a cop car with a weapon? Cops are supposed to do full searches as SOP...for their own freaking safety.
That this cat even had a gun on him to shoot himself with is a violation of pretty much any safety protocols. The department is gonna be fucked on this case. It's at best, negligence, possibly criminally so. At worst, it's murder 1

At Gitmo back in the day there was a group of guys that, according to Pentagon, beat themselves up, tied their own hands behind their backs, and then hung themselves. They are also still officially suicides.
