ORIGINAL: kalikshama We're not talking life sentences for rape, are we? If I were raped, I'd want him to go to jail AND get counseling so he didn't rape someone else when he got out. Why wouldn't you just want him to stay in jail? I don't think a life sentence is ordinarily appropriate for the most common type of rape, that by an acquaintance, which statistically involves less violence than anger, sadistic, war rape, etc. Federal sentencing guidelines take use of violence (among other things) into account: Under federal law, the punishment for rape can range from a fine to life imprisonment. The severity of the punishment is based on the use of violence, the age of the victim, and whether drugs or intoxicants were used to override consent. If the perpetrator is a repeat offender the law prescribes automatically doubling the maximum sentence. See the chart in the above link for what types of rape are not eligible for life imprisonment under federal sentencing guidelines. If these women had survived, I would have no problem with life imprisonment for the perpetrators: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire,_Connecticut,_home_invasion_murders
